Your opinion on Shootout. Keep it or Scrap it?

I always hear that fans are the ones who love the shootout. Well let's put that to the test.

What do you think of it. Would you rather have the shootout or would you rather a different format i.e Extended 4 on 4, go to 3 on 3, ties etc. Or would you want combination of an extended overtime and then shootout.

Better than a tie. Keep it.

Florida Ranger 03-22-2013 11:43 AM

Scrap it. Have a 10 minute overtime.

MastuhNinks 03-22-2013 11:46 AM

Scrap it.

I'm not going to argue that the shootout isn't exciting, but it really just rubs me the wrong way that a skills competition can be the difference between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs.

Sad Panda 03-22-2013 11:46 AM

They really need to extend the overtime to 10 minutes.

pt_mck 03-22-2013 11:47 AM

Scrap it

WHy don't they just thumb wrestle at centre ice, makes just as much sense as a shootout to decide games.

Extend the ot to 10 minutes and have shoot out as something that will break ties in unlikely event no goal is scored in ot. Change point values so that ot winner gets 2 points and loser gets 0. For shoot outs, both teams get .75 for the tie game and winner of shoot out gets .5. SO winner gets 1.25 and loser gets .75

better yet, give 3 points for a regulation time win and 2 points for OT / SO. that way there's an incentive to not just play passively in the third period while the game is tied to 'lock-up' that extra point.

or remove the 1 point the losing team gets in OT / SO.

See avatar.

Machinehead 03-22-2013 01:37 PM

Use it after an extended overtime. I think we should do what we can to avoid too many shootouts and just use it as a last resort.

But you can't have ties. Ties are just.....no.

Orr123 03-22-2013 03:08 PM

Extend the OT to 10 min, then go shootout.

I don't mind the shootout at all, but the OT at 5 min is pretty short.

Endless OT isn't really a good thing for the regular season, so I'm fine with the shootout. If you can't win it in 70 min, then go for the ridiculous shootout.

I would like to see 0 points for a loss, 2 pts for win, 1 point for Shootout win

It's a farce. Team sports should never be decided by individual effort, but rather by team effort and coaching.

Get rid of it and replace with 4 v 4 for five to ten minutes.

Alan Jackson 03-22-2013 03:13 PM

It is, and always was, a horrible idea.

Nothing wrong with a hard fought tie. Watching the shootout is a chore, and I'd rather the game just ended.

I'd go back to 5-on-5 OT, too.

hexy17 03-22-2013 03:23 PM

Keep the shootout but extend OT to 10 mins.

Sergei Shirokov 03-22-2013 03:40 PM

I would like the OT period be extended.

Leafs21 03-22-2013 04:21 PM

Scrap it. Hockey is a team sport and, really, is completely unrelated to a shootout. It's like having a dunk contest to decide a basketball game... I'm all for the ten minute OT

Paranoid Android 03-22-2013 04:31 PM

Scrap the shootout is winning?

I'm so proud HF. I think I just shed a tear.

Flipping a coin is much more civil, they should just do that.

xking23 03-22-2013 04:55 PM

The biggest issue is that the shootout isn't going to be for the people that post on forums. The fans he is talking about are the "casual" fans who would never see this. I enjoy the shootout as entertainment, as a game deciding thing, not so much.

Schalkenullvier* 03-22-2013 05:08 PM

lol people want to get rid of the shootout but they don't want ties either. If you introduce 10 minute overtimes, half the games will still be tied after that. And then?

Keep it, and use the 3-2-1 point system.

korpedo 03-22-2013 05:11 PM

2 OT periods then shootout

DaveG 03-22-2013 05:14 PM

Scrap the shootout. There's nothing wrong with ties, just extend the OT to 10 minutes and if they still can't come to a decision neither team deserves the extra point. What's so hard about that?

Cory Trevor 03-22-2013 05:21 PM

I can't believe I'm saying this but the shootout kind of grew on me this year. That Buffalo Toronto shutout was pretty cool as well.

The sports fan in me wants to keep it but the hockey player in me wants to scrap it. Extend overtimes to 10 minutes and then we'll talk.

This seems like the best option to me
