Deadline deal - NJD - MTL

To Montreal:

Anton Volchenkov
Stephen Gionta

To New Jersey:

Rene Bourque
Yannick Weber
2nd round pick
prospect?

The Devils have about 8 usable defenders... The Canadiens need a big D-Man who can hit and block shots... The Devils need a top 6 forward. Seems like a doable trade.

Maybe not exactly like this one.. bur something close to it.

Bourque had been playing as a top 6 before getting injured, and shoulf be healthy by the deadline.

Weber is highly expendable for the habs, with Tinordi showing us he can play and with Beaulieu not to far off. Weber is also an offensive D-Man who could help NJ PP. and really isn't a crutch in his own zone. (personally love ths guy).

Reuniting the Giontas would be awesome, and I recall him scoring some important goals for NJ last year in the playoffs. Hense why I threw in the 2nd and maybe a prospect...

No Gionta would this work as well??

Rene Bourque
Yannick Weber

for

Anton Volchenkov

?

Second deal would work. I would be hesitant to move Gio. But a 2nd rounder for Stephen is more then enough. Little Gio's value is much higher to NJ then any other team because of the chemistry he has with Carter and Bernier.

He is also leading your team for hits... and has a decent amount of blocked shots. He is hitting his prime, and seems to put the puck in the net in clutch situations. Despitehis chemistry with his linesmates I still think he is a valuable player.

Hes a great 4th liner and a good 3rd. Guy probably has the biggest heart on the team. He isnt afraid of getting into dirty areas, and isnt afraid to sacrifice his body. His biggest problem is he is a C who is terrible at Faceoffs. Would be really hard to move him because he is quickly becoming a fan favorite

Zippy316 03-24-2013 07:12 PM

I don't really foresee the Devils trading Gionta. He is a real smart and defensively responsible player, the only real negative on him is his putrid faceoff ability. But he's the hardest worker and it's fun to see him yell at guys like Barch every once in a while when they aren't playing the system lol.

I think the Devils may be interested in a Gionta for Volchenkov swap. But I think with the acquisition of D'Agostini are team is pretty set though.

At LW, we have Zubrus, Elias, Ponikarovski, Carter
At C, we have Loktionov, Zajac, Henrique, Gionta
At RW, we have Kovalchuk, D'Agostini, Clarkson, Bernier

I don't really see us trading for any forwards at this point, depending on the severity of Kovalchuk's injury of course.

Neither deal works for the Habs. Montreal doesn't really need Volch, who doesn't really mesh with Montreal's Defensive system and Stephen Gionta doesn't really add the size to the 4th line we need.

Rob Nieds work ethic 03-24-2013 07:15 PM

Lou will not deal any part of the CBGB line.

allkill326 03-24-2013 07:19 PM

I would add in the second deal a 3rd pick from New Jersey. I think that will even the trade.

dustyrockon 03-24-2013 07:20 PM

a lot of love for Gios littlw brother going on. I like it. which means I want the habs to get him that much more! ha

Regardless of having a stacked roster, the acquisition of Dagostini is not a top 6 acquisition... I like dago as well for his hard work, but he doesnt put up numbers like he once did.

As volch, he may not fit In mtls d system, but whose to say he couldnt intergrate, and maybe a different approach to our d could make ths difference. hes a brute. I like him.

C'mon, the guy broke up the A-Line in it's prime. I don't think he would hesitate to break up a 4th line if he thought it would improve the team.

terrific deal. let's trade bourque...for a tiny bottom 6 winger.
exactly what we need! + a second

meh, as much as bourque isnt terrible and does have size... Id rather add weight and size on the back end... That would allow us to keep Moen, Prust and White. all physical players.

lil gio plays a big game for his size regardless. he has 63 hits this season and only 8PIM. not saying their bone crushing hits (this is why we add volch) but they are hits none the less and a hit usually takes a player out of the current play.

dustyrockon 03-24-2013 07:43 PM

what would devils fans say to this instead?

Anton Volchenkov
Steve Bernier

For

Rene Bourque
Yannick Weber
2nd rounder (mid)

JesusBouillon 03-24-2013 07:45 PM

I have absolutely zero interest in Stephen Gionta personally. Another diminutive forward isn't what we need.

No way.

Bernier is actually looking more like the player he was picked to be. He's playing some of his best hockey now. D'Agostini is a second/third line acquisition that will probably flip with Clarkson depending on the linemates. Kovalchuk is the first line RW, D'Agostini is the project second/third line RW, and if all else fails, Bernier has played pretty well with Elias-Henrique, so we can always move D'Agostini on the fourth line.

Okay then my 2nd proposal in the OP is not absurd. we find our big 4th liner elsewhere.

Isn't Rene Bourque out indefinitely with a concussion?

Lol, they're not untouchable you know. You mean to say they'd trade Henrique or Larsson before they moved Carter/Bernier/Gionta?

Get real.

Well we don't have to worry about their availability because they're not moving so good day sir.

Gio for Volch swap would be the best case scenario

absolutely not. we are not dropping our captain for a d who isnt even a producer... Volch would have to waive his NTC anyways and he probably wouldnt, but in terms of fairness Bourque + Weber is a ver fair offer. And weber is an EXCELLENT bottom pairing offensive d man, who could easily put up 20-25 points in a full healthy season. mayne more

engy 03-24-2013 08:37 PM

I would do it but Volchenkov has a NMC.
