Top 50: Lehner among biggest risers in 2013 Spring rankings

Nine of the 10 players featured in the 31-40 spots of the Hockey's Future Spring ranking of the Top 50 NHL prospects were also ranked in the Fall edition, though there has been some significant movement throughout the grouping. Much of the movement has to do with how some of these players have dealt with adjusting to a new level of competition this season, with some excelling and others struggling.

The biggest riser of the group is goaltender Robin Lehner (OTT), who has been exceptional in the AHL this season and equally remarkable since being called up to the NHL, where he has helped an injury-depleted Ottawa squad maintain a spot in the playoffs

Trouba is at least top 30 if not top 20...

Jacko95 03-26-2013 12:53 PM

WOW didn't expect Conacher to make a HF list, very very surprising (not becuase of Coancher, he deserves it but because of HF !!! ). :handclap:
Now lets just see where they rank Vasilevski :)

StronGeer 03-26-2013 12:58 PM

Trouba and Scheifele don't belong on this list.

They are on the Top 20 or 30 at minumum.

Scheifele had 5 more goals than Strome in 8 less games. Not to mention top line time at the World Juniors while Strome was 2nd line duty. Was also much better than Strome in that tournament.

Trouba demolished college hockey in his Freshman (!!!) year. And dominated World Juniors as well.

:help:

AwesomePanthers 03-26-2013 12:59 PM

Bjugstad way to low.. the league will see it in a year..

Zeroknowledge* 03-26-2013 01:00 PM

Trouba is way too low. Way too low.

Duke749 03-26-2013 01:07 PM

I'm gonna be very interested to see what defensemen you have ahead of Trouba.

Flair Hay 03-26-2013 01:09 PM

Not too affluent with prospects in relation to one another, but based on the hype Trouba has been getting I'm going to assume the majority ahead of him are older, more experienced players.

Heard a lot of people (+ that article) saying he'd be 4th-5th in a redraft already.

MoreGore 03-26-2013 01:12 PM

Do not forget that this particular top 50 is overly talented as this is usually the one that has the most turnover. The lockout has created a super competitive group that is not consistent with the quality you would find on other lists.

FolignoQuantumLeap 03-26-2013 01:13 PM

Yeah, I'd say Trouba is closer to being in the top 10 than this group.

I'm probably being a little sensitive but this kind of irked me

There is little doubt that Lehner has the potential to be a good starting goalie at the NHL level.
A good starting goaltender? What is he now?

JetsHomer 03-26-2013 01:25 PM

Scheifele puts up third highest ppg in the OHL, being within a tenth of a ppg of Strome and Galchenyuk, along with a good WJC performance and he falls in the rankings ? Since being sent back to Juniors he's over 2 ppg

If Dumba is higher than Trouba on this list I don't know what to think...

Trouba closer to Rielly and Murray than he is to Pouliout. Not sure how he's 37th after the season he had

Howboutthempanthers 03-26-2013 01:48 PM

Bjugstad = too low.

Anderson is the starter not Bishop and Lehner. They are both splitting time while he's recovering from injury but make no mistake Anderson is the Senators' starting goalie for now. Lehner could be a starting goalie if with another team and it's most likely that he will make Anderson expendable at one point in the very near future. Right now, the Senators are seeing which one is better Bishop or Lehner because one of them is going to get traded. They can't keep three good goalies. I am betting that more teams want Lehner over Bishop, just my opinion. The Senators should keep Lehner as he's really settled down and improve the mental aspects to his game. I see him as a better Braden Holtby type goalie, similar temperments. I am not COMPARING their techniques or talents.

I think Trouba will eventually show to be closer to the Top 15 in the future but one season in the NCAA and two good WJC tournaments don't put him in the NHL. For the record I would take him on my team any day. Remember you could do this list a week, month, six months or a year from now and it will be different each time. Eveyone would have a very different list. I like a good two-way complete defensemen over only offensive minded or just stay-at-home defenders where you might prefer the more offensive blueliners only. That's why we do the Top 50 with many lists to come to a concensus on the prospects. It's impossible to please everyone and it might look okay now and not tomorrow or vice versa. It's really a crap-shoot when it comes to projecting how a prospect will turn out in the end. Just way too many things that can go wrong on the way to getting to the NHL.

Thanks for reading the Top 50 articles and making your comments. It is really appreciated by the staff.

Jets fans are way more pissed about the Trouba ranking.

It blows our minds. He dominated every level he played at this year. Won defenseman of the WJC's, was named a CCHA all star as a freshman, etc. There's very little to justify ranking him this low. Nothing in his play suggests he's a one-hit wonder.

Compared to other rankings (Hockey News, Pronman, etc.) they all have Trouba waaay higher.

Right. Except there's 36 other prospects who you would take over him on any day.

Tomas Hertl *snicker* apparently among them.

I realize every fanbase will overrate its own prospects, but Trouba being left outside the top 20 seems wrong. Wait, scratch that. Is wrong.

InjuredChoker 03-26-2013 02:27 PM

Trouba over Nyquist? Not sure about that. Nyquist is maybe more NHL ready. Maybe.

Or not.

I'd trade Nyquist for Trouba any day.

And basically the same with Bjugstad.

Pierce Hawthorne 03-26-2013 02:29 PM

Unless Tyson Barrie is in the next group of rankings he's likely not in there at all...

Once again, HF really has no idea what they're talking about when it comes to prospects. Trouba is way to low, Lehner is to low, Conacher is to low.

Horrible list.

Yeah I would say he could be a top 20-25 guy.

I'm surprised conacher is that low. He should be way higher assuming that the criteria is who will have the best impact in the nhl. Conacher already proved he can be a factor

Hertl is not the guy I'd pick out of that bunch. If you're going to pick on anyone, pick Armia. But yeah, Trouba should be around #15ish.

Anyway, good for Tomas. He absolutely deserves to be ranked this highly. Doesn't get much of any attention from hockey fans because he plays in the Czech Extraliga and is a Sharks prospect. But he's insanely good.

Is that really the way these lists are meant to be taken? Or could it be that they feel there are 36 other prospects who are a little better right now?

Fair enough.

That comment wasn't supposed to be an indictment of Hertl, it's just that I can't fathom how Trouba would be ranked below him (or Armia, for that matter).

A good backup since he isn't the starter?

Wait seriously Hertl being that low is almost as shocking as Trouba.
