AD's Top 55 Americans 2013 Draft...

Every year I try to put a list together of the top US players for their respective entry drafts. This year I have been extremely busy so this one is a bit overdue. I am sure not everyone is going to agree with me, and lets be honest here, I am ranking kids from US high schools, NCAA, CHL, USHL, EJHL, and everywhere in between. This is not an easy thing to do, it takes a ton of time, and I am sure even with 55 names I will have a few omissions that some believe should be on here.

This list is basically how I feel these kids will get drafted this year (order wise). I am sure players I have ranked in the 30's will outperform some ranked in the teens down the road, but I am trying to blend future potential with what is currently seen.

If I have any glaring omissions let me know as I have a new born who has made me sleep deprived and forgetful at times. I hope you enjoy the list and welcome honest and educated debate over this as it is pure guess work trying to figure out what kids will get drafted ahead of what kids past the first 4-5 names.

I put a separate small list for goalies as I don't rank them with the skaters...way too difficult.

TOP 55 AMERICAN PLAYERS

1. Seth Jones - 6'4 206 - D - Portland - likely #1 pick overall...pure stud
2. Adam Erne - 6'1 200 - F - QUEBEC - future power forward, Billy Guerin mold
3. Ryan Hartman - 5'11 190 - F - Plymouth - all heart player, next Ryan Callahan
4. Steve Santini - 6'1 208 - D - USA NTDP - has all around skills to be a top 20 pick
5. Jimmy Lodge - 6'2 175 - F - Saginaw - huge riser, sky is the limit for skilled forward
6. J.T Compher - 5'10 178 - F - USA NTDP -another heart and soul player teams covet
7. Ian McCoshen - 6'3 207 - D - Waterloo - all around beast might go higher
8. Connor Hurley - 6'0 180 - F - Edina H.S - best H.S kid in draft, huge riser
9. Keaton Thompson - 6'0 185 - D - USA NTDP - smooth and skilled borderline 1st round
10. Taylor Cammarata - 5'7 165 - F - Waterloo - if I had stones I would put him higher.
11. Justin Bailey - 6'3 185 - F- Kitchener - very raw and skilled, reminds me of Okposo
12. Hudson Fasching - 6'2 214 - F - USA NTDP - dropped a bit, but still a solid player with big potential mid 2nd round at worst
13. Ryan Fitzgerald - 5'9 170 - F - Valley Jr - a ton of love for this kid, tons of skill...could be big surprise pick
14. Cole Cassels - 6-0 178 - F - Oshawa - love his all around game, nothing flashy just steady
15. Michael Downing - 6'3 190 - D - Dubuque - this kid is another riser, has size and skill, could be a Jordan Schmaltz type late first
16. John Hayden - 6'3 210 - F - USA NTDP - one of my favorite players. love the size and compete level.
17. Brett Pesce - 6'3 175 - D- New Hampshire - I am a bit down on him, didn't really wow me, but I am sure he gets picked in top 60
18. Tommy Vannelli - 6'1 165 - D - Minnetonka H.S. - love these skilled dmen coming out of Minny H.S.
19. Michael McCarron - 6'5 225 - F - USA NTDP - kid is a beast with some skill..some team is going to grab him pretty high
20. Nick Betz - 6'5 210 - F - Erie - another beast that will get picked up pretty high..decent hands to go with massive frame
21. Teemu Kivihalme - 6'1 165 - D - Burnsville H.S. - like Vannelli, super skilled, cant wait to see him in NCAA
22. Tyler Motte - 5'9 184 - F - USANTDP - my biggest disappointment so far..kid has tons of skill, needs to show it much more
23. REMOVED DUE TO STUPIDITY
24. Luke Johnson - 5'11 178 - F - Lincoln - fan of the way he plays, has two way ability, player to keep an eye on down the road
25. Evan Allen - 5'10 195 - F - USA NTDP - like Motte, I expected more from Allen, kid is still gifted and will likely be next years Riley Barber imo..
26. Tyler Hill - 6'6 225 - F - Chicago Steel - impressed with his gifts, just not convinced with the limited viewings, some team will snag him up though
27. Greg Betzold - 6'2 195 - F - Peterborough - nothing flashy, solid grit and size
28. Cole Bardreau - 5'10 184 - F - Cornell - not getting passed over again..no way
29. Quentin Shore - 6'1 185 - F - Denver - see Cole Bardreau
30. Miles Liberati - 6'0 195 - D - London - solid all around dman, should get picked
31. Grant Besse - 5'10 185 - F - Benlide H.S -has been one of my favs for sometime..kid deserves to get picked
32. Gabe Guertler - 5'9 178 - F - Fargo - some people love him others hate him..I think he should be much higher than where I have him..
33. Michael Brodzinski - 5'11 183 - D - Muskegon - solid all around player, has awesome shot
34. Zachary Sanford - 6'3 190 - F - Islanders - love the size and raw ability
35. Anthony Florentino - 6'1 201 - D - Selects - like Sanford, wildcard player
36. Blake Heinrich - 5'11 192 - D - Sioux City - has skill to be a late round pick
37. Willie Raskob - 5'10 187 - D - Shattuck - kid has worlds of skill, on the smaller side but shouldn't hold him back
38. Dakota Mermis - 5'11 190 - D - London - passed over once, cant see it being twice
39. Avery Peterson - 6'2 193 - F - Grand Rapids - solid frame and skill, probably should be higher
40. Tyler Kelleher - 5'6 164 - F - USA NTDP - super skilled, but super small
41. Trevor Moore - 5'9 175 - F - Tri City -USHL - one of my favs, just on the smaller side, hope it doesn't hold teams back
42. Sean Malone - 5'11 185 - F - USA NTDP - nothing flashy just solid both ends
43. Sam Povorozniouk - 5'10 183 - F - Kingston - hope my Chicago boy can get picked up
44. Brian Williams - 5'8 175 - F - Tri City - once mighty, has fallen due to size
45. Cody Corbett - 6'1 196 - D - Edmonton - can he get passed over again?
46. Chase Suoto - 5'11 176 - F - Kamloops - solid knack for the net but little wow factor
47. Zach Glienke - 6'3 200 - F - Eagan H.S - again like Peterson probably too low on this kid, haven't seen enough to really rank higher
48. Matt Weis - 5'10 194 - F - Green Bay - I expected a bit more from Matt this year, but from 30-50 these kids can flop all over the place
49. Clint Lewis - 6'2 206 - D - USA NTDP - I like Clint a lot, just steady both sides...probably goes higher because he plays for the USNTDP
50. Will Butcher - 5'10 200 - D - USA NTDP - cant believe he is this low.
51. Anthony Louis - 5'6 142 - F - USA NTDP - if he was 4 inches taller and 25 lbs bigger, kid would be top 10-15 talent
52. Jason Salvaggio - 6'0 190 - F - Indiana - got to see him a lot, didn't impress me a ton
53. Alex Roos - 5'9 169 - F - Chicago Steel - my favorite player in the draft from the US..I doubt he gets picked but he was fun as hell to watch this year..good luck kid!!
54. Steve Duda - 6'4 195 - D - Saint John - love the size and grit, could find a late round home
55. Max Iafrate - 6'2 210 - D - Kitchener - might get passed over again as his defense really isn't great nor is his offense, just love the Iafrate name..kid has fallen since tier-1

well that's my top 55....a few names that I had just outside of those 55 are :
Adam Power -D- , Beau McCue -F-, Thomas Ebbing -F-,John Stevens - F-, Jake Guentzel -F-, Ross Olsson -F-, Luke Voltin - F-, Scott Savage -D-, Jordan Gross -D-, Tyler Andrew-F-, Brian Pinho -F-, Willie Sherman -D-, Ryan Segalla -D-, Adam Johnson -F-, Chris Forney -D-, .

THe goalies that I have are just 5 names :

1. Eamon McAdam
2. Brendan Burke
3. Hunter Miska
4. Brandon Hope
5. Jay Williams

again, I am not big on goalies and I really don't know if this is a solid year for US goalies as the depth doesn't seem like it...

but that is my top 55 plus list...cant wait for the flaming to begin!

I also enjoy your lists even if I think you may overhype some.

P.S congrats on the new born, trust me you will get more sleep in about 3 years.

StrongIslanders90 03-27-2013 12:03 PM

Even with the Isles depth on D prospects, I would love them to somhow get Santini..

It will be tough because we dont have a second and imo he will be a late 1st or 2nd rounder...

Totally agree about Cole Bardreau, he is too good not to be passed up again.

I thought he has both (Canada and USA) citizenship...

NJDevils 03-27-2013 02:35 PM

are you not a fan of either Eddie Ellis (Andover - USHS MA) or Connor Clifton (US NTDP u18)?

Daneurism 03-27-2013 03:03 PM

Lipon played for Team Canada at the World Juniors. I think that seals it, does it not?

I like Clifton, he is decent...

Ellis is someone I havent hard or seen much of...where would you have both guys on my list if you could place them somewhere...in your opinion.

Spitzman 03-27-2013 07:08 PM

Nice list....Tyler Hill is Canadian, though.

SnipShow 03-27-2013 07:12 PM

Any chance Danny Vanderweil of the Plymouth Whalers gets a look? He is buried on a real deep Plymouth team but I like his game. I think he will have a lot bigger year in 2014

He's a dual citizen. Tried out for USA's Ivan Hlinka squad last summer.

yeah I like him and was going to put him on my next list...depends if scouts saw enough of him this year to make a judgement on his ability.

He seems to be the John Ramage of this years draft but at forward. I have him low on the list because 2nd-3rd year eligible players can really go anywhere in the draft, but he certainly will get picked as he is a perfect prototypical 4th line grinder who could have some solid 3rd line years as well....well worth a mid round pick on a player who has proven to be a pest away from the puck and not completely incompetent with it...hope he goes in the top 4 rounds.

I will preface this by saying I only cover the East, so I have not seen every guy on this list. Also, I only saw the US u18 team once, when they made their way to Merrimack in their NCAA trip.

In that one game, I liked Clifton more than I liked Butcher or Lewis, so I would probably have Clifton atleast around those two guys.

As for Ellis, I have him ranked higher than Kelleher. I think Kelleher is more skilled with the puck, but I think his size will hold him back in June and in the future. Ellis has size, skating ability, and raw talent. I think he did not live up to preseason expectations, but I still think he gets taken in June

PariseSuterKoivu 03-27-2013 11:45 PM

Compher isn't the biggest kid but he'll be a star in the NHL.

my biggest weakness with US kids is East Coast players. I dont get a chance to see a lot of them unless they are involved in tournaments or I really go out of my way to find some streams on certain players. I made an effort this year to take notice of Fitzgerald as I think he is a real good one. I also liked Sanford this year as a real possible surprise player that gets taken higher than expected.

as for Clifton, I couldnt argue with any of that as I think all 3 of him, Butcher, and Lewis all are right around each other in terms of talent...but for whatever the reason, Clifton just reminded me a lot of Kevin Clare and he didnt get drafted in his year..

thanks, this is my 3rd baby, I havent slept in 7 years!!!

and by the way, I havent overhyped anyone in weeks!! hahaha

thanks for looking as always Alberta.

AmericanDream 03-28-2013 10:30 AM

By looking at my list I believe we will see 8 Americans taken in the first round and 8 in the second round..

those are going to be hard numbers to reach but I expect a few surprise Americans getting picked higher then expected.

16 out of the first 60 will be USA players...lets see how it turns out!

Joe Hallenback 03-28-2013 10:32 AM

I always wondered if Fasching came to the WHL if he would have went higher. Seems like he has all the tools NHL teams want

it will be a question that could haunt him down the road, but with his family situation I think he made the right call. sometimes there are a few players that have a ton of skill that for whatever reason just get stuck in the crowd on the USNDP that when they leave for college they blow up ala Michael Mersch...see Riley Barber for the most recent example of that. I think Fasching will be fine, his size and skillset will give him every opportunity to make it down the road as the kid has an amazing heart and attitude.

I always felt that if Seth Ambroz went to the WHL he would have been a star...who knows if that would be the case but these kids have to make decisions that do sadly impact them for life.

john g 03-28-2013 10:56 AM

what about Brodzinski's older brother Johnny? he tore it up as a freshman at St.Cloud. granted he's 20 but still, 21 goals in the W as a freshman is impressive.

stayinalive 03-28-2013 11:13 AM

What about Cal Petersen? He is rankend 4th among North American Goalies by CSS and should definitely be among the Top 3 American Goalies.
