UFA Malkin in 2014

Malkin has expressed his desire to stay in Pittsburgh before, but a lot can happen in two years. I think the expectation is that he will have an extension before then, but in the event that he is injured and seen as too much of a risk by Pittsburgh to commit to, wants to be the #1 star in town, wants more money than Pittsburgh would be able to offer, or any other reason, what would he fetch?

Is there a maximum salary a team can offer? If not then this would be the highest bidding war ever possibly.

Discuss civilly. :)

Penguins signed Crosby to a huge extension who you would think is seen as a much bigger risk with injuries.

I don't think that would be the reason if Malkin isn't re-signed.

pld459666 03-31-2013 02:08 PM

I can see him leaving, but I don't think he does.

Joe T Choker 03-31-2013 02:08 PM

IF Pittsburgh doesn't re-sign him, I see his value as being very low, due to the KHL ... I honestly believe he'll go home

Stop Winnin 03-31-2013 02:08 PM

I would break the bank for him, max contract for as long as he likes.

Billy Mays Here 03-31-2013 02:09 PM

Obviously he'll be signing with the Leafs.

MarleauApologist 03-31-2013 02:09 PM

I want him to leave Pittsburgh, just for some change if nothing else.

Rinzler 03-31-2013 02:11 PM

Malkin's 10+ Mil cap hit is coming soon!

Flukeshot 03-31-2013 02:11 PM

I am confident Malkin will re-sign with the Pens. They moved Staal with that in mind. A player's contract is limited to 20% of the cap ceiling in the year that they sign. I don't think it'll take that much to keep him in Pittsburgh.

Exactly :handclap:

Max contract from the leafs

Jtown 03-31-2013 02:19 PM

I could see him leaving , but i think pitt will do whatever in their power to make sure he stays. I think signing malkin is going to cost them letang but that is the sacrifice you have to make.

Affirmatively.

This. It would suck but we HAVE to retain Geno.

I could workout for the better in the end too. Letang is a great player but his injury woes are just becoming flatout unbelievable

KingWantsCup 03-31-2013 02:26 PM

I forgot that Letang is also a UFA for 2014. That sucks for Pittsburgh. Letang is gonna get $6-$7M at least.

Hotlanta 03-31-2013 02:28 PM

Him and Kulemin will pull a Suter/Parise. I don't know where they'll go, whether Pittsburgh, Toronto, KHL or somewhere else, but I think they will be together unless they both sign with their respective teams.

Pierre Dagenais 03-31-2013 02:28 PM

Joining his favorite team in July 2014

Something tells me that Malkin and Kulemin won't get identical contracts like Suter and Parise ... Just a hunch ...

Flat Stanley 03-31-2013 02:31 PM

Malkin wants to stay, last summer at the NHL Awards when they were talking about contract extensions for Crosby he said "I hope they sign me, too".

The Penguins traded Jordan Staal last summer so I think Shero will try his best to keep Malkin.

I still think we can keep Letang but that all depends. We don't know what kind of money he wants.

Ray Shero can talk extensions with both players this offseason, I'm pretty sure that if Letang and the Penguins can't agree to an extension, then Kris Letang will be traded this offseason.

KrugLife 03-31-2013 02:31 PM

If there were no salary cap, I could seen Sather offering 20 mil a year

JayQueensNY88* 03-31-2013 02:33 PM

Good bye Richards buy him out and good bye Gabby. Sign Malkin to a 8 yr deal.

Lets go Rangers

The Rangers can't sign Malkin to an 8 year deal.

That's one advantage Pittsburgh has over everyone else.

There's roughly a 1% chance that Malkin is playing anywhere but Pittsburgh in 2014-15. He'll be given a blank checkbook to write his contract in like last time and Shero will work around the rest of the roster to make it work. As long as both sides want the other to be there it's hard to imagine any sort of flight risk. Malkin is not the kind of guy who craves the spotlight.

McTank 03-31-2013 02:41 PM

Id give him max everything

yeah but if getzs and perry got 8m+ AAV i could see him getting 9-9.5m on a 7yr contract.. well worth the contract IMO.. hes one of the worlds best.. who knows if he'll stay in Pitt, they will have to decide what to do as well.. make trades or deal with contracts of him and Letang.. should be interesting.. def going to be tight..

i wouldn't count out 7yr-70m offer from some team as well.. IMO noway KHL, why NHL is the best league and is only getting better.. why play the game with lower competition.. plus it would have to be some mind boggling offer for him to go..
