Random Question re: Trades

This may be a stupid question, but here goes...

Can a player who gets traded during the season actually play more than the total number of games in a season? That is, if a player this year goes from one team after having played 36 games to a team that has played only 34 games and then proceeds to play the remainder of the season - can that player feasibly play 50 games in the regular season? Or do they have to sit two somewhere? Will they get paid for the extra 2 if not?

Yes it is possible and has happened in the pass. I am not sure how it works with pay though.

RJ8812 04-02-2013 09:01 PM

yes, it has happened many times

There's a couple players who have done so. I think Joe Thornton played 83 the season he was traded.

yes they can play, and no, their salary does not increase.

Yep----they can play more than the 82 games.

They may have clauses in his contract that make it a per game rate for salary so they would get two extra game paychecks if they play 84 games.

Alex Goligoski played 83 games in 2010-2011.

Jimmy Carson once played 86 games in the regular season.

TooMuchMan 04-02-2013 09:07 PM

Back when the season was 84 games in length, two players actually managed to play 86 games due to being traded: Bob Kudelski (93-94) and Jimmy Carson (92-93).

Link.
