Pens acquire Jussi Jokinen for conditional 7th-round pick | Carolina retaining ~$900k

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=419772

Quote:

The Penguins acquire Jokinen in exchange or a conditional 2013 seventh-round draft pick. The Hurricanes are retaining some of Jokinen's salary in the transaction. If Jokinen plays 50 per cent of the Penguins playoff games and the team wins the Stanley Cup, Carolina will receive a sixth-round pick.

In 33 games with the Hurricanes this season, Jokinen has scored six goals and added five assists.

The former sixth-round draft pick is in the second year of a three-year, $9 million deal.

Jokinen has scored 121 goals and 225 assists in 569 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Cant complain about this depth move i guess. Literally no cost at all, and if he finds his game again, huuuge steal for us.

dr robbie 04-03-2013 12:59 PM

wow. so IF he plays 50% of the games and IF we win the stanley cup, they get a 6TH round pick. Yeah, I'm okay with that. not a bad move at all and adds some possible depth.

mpp9 04-03-2013 01:00 PM

Guy's got skill. Will likely be our 2nd best f/o guy. Can play all three forward positions. And we're giving up maybe a 6th?

Thanks Ray.

Darth Vitale 04-03-2013 01:02 PM

What I like best abotu this deal:

Skilled player primed for "change of venue".

Improves our Faceoffs.

Can play all 3 F positions and PK.

Glass, Kennedy, Jeffrey, maybe even Adams... expendable potentially.

Captain Hook 04-03-2013 01:02 PM

I like it if Carolina eats half the salary. Otherwise I have to imagine the Pens will use him as a stopgap, hope he plays well enough during that time that they can move him at his new lower salary once the off-season hits.

They are eating some salary, not sure how much. Pick only goes to Carolina in return if Pens make the SCF; 6th rounder if Jokinen plays 50% of playoff games, 7th if he plays 25% of playoff games, none if he plays less.

As others have said, we can always compliance buyout in the offseason if he doesn't work out. If he does work out, he'll push one of our scrubs (TK, Glass) out of the lineup for this run. All win here.

InfernalDark 04-03-2013 01:06 PM

Feel sorry for you Jussi, I really do.

Darth Vitale 04-03-2013 01:07 PM

Guys Tyler Kennedy is making 2M this season. If Jokinen costs us $1.5M through next year... getting rid of Kennedy and replacing him (for 1 year) with a more skilled, more versatile player is not a bad idea. There's going to be some rumblin' and jumblin' this summer to position ourselves for long term cap balance. Guys like Orpik might figure into that too. If Jokinen plays well this year, I'm pretty happy with this move.

Cardboard Orpik 04-03-2013 01:10 PM

Sounds like Glass might have just lost his roster spot.

Are they definitely eating half of his salary? I'm behind on the info here...

Captain Hook 04-03-2013 01:14 PM

I guess it could work if Carolina eats half the salary. Probably means Cooke and TK will be gone though.

No figure reported yet.

This might actually be the first trade under the new CBA rules where one team is retaining salary? I can't remember another one off the top of my head.

If when Crosby comes back, this move pushes Glass to the bench, well I am all for it... Heck if he continues to put up the stats at the mediocre pace he has this year, he would still be an upgrade over Glass...

I think Matthew Lombardi was traded from Toronto to Phoenix with salary retained.

The Leafs retained some in the Lombardi trade.

Lamar Latrell 04-03-2013 01:24 PM

This screams of a Glass replacement. They need someone to take on some PK minutes is Glass is squeezed out of the lineup. Jokinen can play PK.

Does Carolina paying some of his salary reduce his cap hit to the Pens?

Edit: Hurricanes will be charged w/ the cap hit and the Pens will take on what remains.

This is bizarre. Jokinen's not having a great season, but he has put up some points in the past, is great on the draw, has reasonable advanced stats, just turned 30, AND Carolina is retaining half(?) of the cap hit?

I don't get it. What's the catch?

SEALBound 04-03-2013 01:26 PM

One can dream. Great depth move. I believe this is the writing on the wall for TK. Doubt hell be traded but no way is he resigned

It should but we're waiting for the specifics on that. Terms of the money retained not released so far.

Mordax 04-03-2013 01:28 PM

I like it

cheebatree 04-03-2013 01:28 PM

So this is a fourth line addition I guess?

I'd rather see Kennedy go to the bench. At least Glass kills penalties.

WhatsaMaatta 04-03-2013 01:30 PM

Will he actually play?
