MASON TO PHILLY
Flyers GM Paul Holmgren confirmed that the team has acquired goaltender Steve Mason from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for (G) Michael Leighton and a third round draft pick in 2015.

Mason is 3-6-1 with a 2.95 goals-against-average and .899 save percentage in 13 appearances this season. In his last start, Mason turned aside 29 shots in a 6-4 win over the Calgary Flames.

"I'm extremely excited for it. I'm really looking forward to a fresh opportunity, going to a great organization with some players that I have some history with at the World Juniors and just really looking forward to meeting the new guys and starting off fresh," said Mason in an interview on TSN.

Over the course of his five seasons in the NHL, Mason owns a 96-99-27 record to go along with a 2.90 GAA and .903 save percentage with 27 career shutouts.

Mason won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 2009 after he posted a 33-20-7 record with a 2.29 GAA and .916 save percentage to go along with 10 shutouts in 61 games.

The 6-foot-4, 217 pound net minder was originally selected in the third round (69th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Ditto

Mason had an amazing stretch during his rookie season and has been below average since.

Would have much preferred to make a deal for Ben Bishop instead of getting Mason.

Bernie Parent 1974 04-03-2013 01:32 PM

bye bye ML & Boosh ....

TheDrizzle81 04-03-2013 01:33 PM

I may be in the extreme minority here, but I feel this is a great pick up (I mean we did give up on a young kid who beat him out but..) who knows, change of scenery could be what the doctor ordered. All those years on a bad team, after an amazing rookie season, could be time for change.

And who should they have moved that's equivalent to Cory Conacher?

If Conacher was dealt Bishop, it may have taken Read to get him to Phi. That would have been an overpayment.

Aren't the Flyers at 50 contracts? Wonder if someone else is going to CBJ?

2.9 Million dollar ****** back up :handclap:

Ottawa wanted, and got, a huge return on Bishop. Read plus a draft pick would have been too much.

Mason has been biggest problem

Last year there #2 played well behind same team ,, Bobrovsky is playing well behind same team

Its Mason that is problem

I'm currently neutral on this. We'll see what the return is. Guy has not lived up to his potential.

For three weeks. He won't be getting that much next season.

The Flyers specialize in disappointing goaltenders. We collect them, like fine wines that are just starting to turn to vinegar.

The Flyers are at 50 contracts... another move brewing, if no player moved to Columbus?

Better than any of the back ups the Flyers currently have. As others have pointed out, maybe a change in scenery was all Mason needed.

TheLegendkiller 04-03-2013 01:38 PM

Man wtf..... The highest I go is a 4th rounder.

Sniped 04-03-2013 01:39 PM

You've gotta be kidding me. Sam Carchidi tweeting the Flyers would have definitely bought out Bryz if they got Bishop.

Instead we have a goalie who is just as, if not worse than Bryz.
