2013 UFA targets for Buffalo?

A lot will depend on what we do with Vanek, Miller, and Stafford after the season. Thoughts (want him?, max length/$'s you would offer, likelihood we could acquire):

Valtteri Filppula C/LW 28 $3,000,000
David Clarkson RW 28 $2,666,667
Nathan Horton RW 27 $4,000,000
Damien Brunner RW 27 $1,350,000
Clarke MacArthur LW 27 $3,250,000
Tyler Bozak C 26 $1,500,000
Anton Khudobin G 26 $875,000
Mike Smith G 30 $2,000,000
Jimmy Howard G 28 $2,250,000
Ian White D 28 $2,875,000

NOTE: If I gooned any of the above and they are not UFA's this summer, please correct.

Jacob582 04-03-2013 10:17 PM

Clarkson

Der Jaeger 04-03-2013 10:18 PM

Clarkson

dire wolf 04-03-2013 10:22 PM

Bozak maybe. Not Horton. I can't stand that guy.

Revelate 04-03-2013 10:22 PM

With the current state of our roster, we'd have to overpay Clarkson so much to come here that it wouldn't be worth it.

jBuds 04-03-2013 10:38 PM

Mark Streit, please.

On the downswing, yes, but we need offense from the back end.

We also need some grit/physicality back there, too

clumping platelets 04-03-2013 10:40 PM

Clarkson is the only one of that group

kenfury 04-03-2013 10:42 PM

A quick add on is that Heatley will probably be either bought out or to be had on the extremely cheap.

Myllz 04-03-2013 10:44 PM

Clarkson's a nice player, but I don't really see where he fits on a team that's just beginning a rebuild.

Top Pair Imposter 04-03-2013 10:47 PM

Bozak

sjci 04-03-2013 10:49 PM

Bozak, Brunner, and Clarkson from that list.

Rasmus Reichel 04-03-2013 10:58 PM

Trade stafford and miller, sign howard, clarkson, horton and bozak.
Vanek-CoHo-Horton
Leino-Ennis-Clarkson
Ott-Bozak-Foligno
Tropp-Porter-Kaleta/flynn

Ehrhoff-Sekera
Myers-XXX(traded for)
Pysyk-Weber/McNabb

Howard
Hackett

But more realistically I think maybe sign one guy and wait till the 14 class

Beerz 04-03-2013 11:01 PM

I'd take Horton, Clarkson or Bozak.

I wouldn't expect anything huge or a lot of activity in FA..

Darcy is in full rebuild...and I expect them to suck next year too...

Just get me so more heart n soul guys so they are at least enjoyable to watch.

There are a few guys that I would really enjoy seeing as Sabres..

Mason Raymond or Viktor Stalberg
Matt Cooke
Tyler Bozak or Boyd Gordon
Mark Fistric
Rob Klinkhammer

Mostly role player types, didn't see any RW that I cared for tho. Cooke-Ott-Kaleta would be the most hated line in the league :D

Pretty much all of the people on that list in the OP are gonna be re-upped by their current clubs. They won't let them walk cause they're mostly playing well.

If they can afford them, yes.

Irving Zisman 04-04-2013 05:54 AM

I'm pretty sure he's a UFA, but one of the best and most underrated players the Sabres could add would be Boyd Gordon

Gabrielor 04-04-2013 07:45 AM

I have a list that may be slightly outdated, but Free Agents for 2013 on it included Matt Cullen, Ruslan Fedetenko, and Jamie Langenbrunner.

(Subjective):

I believe this isn't a year for wildly spending the money; 2014 and 2015 will provide better opportunities. This year should be the year of the quiet move in free agency. An under-the-radar acquisition of a veteran bottom-six guy or a veteran-defenseman.

As shown above, the prospect of signing Cullen in particular intrigues me. One of the league's best faceoff guys, which is a trouble spot for us. Assuming the franchise intends to draft possible top-tier talent (i.e. tank for a top-3 pick, or trade or luck into one), then our focus based on the projected 2013 free agent market should be bottom-6/bottom-4 veteran and possibly a trade of our own vets if a good deal is presented (see: Pominville deal).

Regier talked about it at the presser yesterday and it makes me think he's just looking for guys to fill in while the kids (Grigs, Girgs, Armia, etc.) mature.

So, no Ehrhoff or Leino like long term deals and just guys that will take 1 or 2 year deals.

While I like Clarkson, would he take a short deal????

Corto 04-04-2013 08:12 AM

I like Filpulla a LOT, but I'm also sure teams will line up and overpay for him this summer - and with the cap coming down, I'd be even more wary of big contracts in Regier's place.

TehDoak 04-04-2013 08:23 AM

Per Darcy at the presser....we aren't going to add core guys.

We'll see some vet plugs here and there. Even after the Poms trade, it's gonna be tough to find forward slots:

Vanek-Hodgson-Stafford
Leino-Ennis-Ott
Foligno-Grigerenko-Armia
Flynn-Porter-Kaleta
McCormick, Tropp, Adam

Maybe Grigs and Armia start the year in the A....but Darcy was very caandid about Free agents this summer. You need a core in place, Free Agents will supplement that Core.

If we end up moving out more Vets, it will likely be for some D at this point.

Myers-Ehrhoff
Sekera-Weber
Pysyk-????

Is our D as of right now. Looking at the free agent pool...Lydman could be brought back on a short term deal. Mark Fistric, Ian White, etc.

2-3 year deal, 2-3 million per.

RageJageSabes 04-04-2013 08:38 AM

Stephen Weiss anyone?

Yeah, the sense I had after hearing that was that they'd pursue character vets to be around the kids, and were not going to be diving headlong into the deep end of the UFA pool. In other words, the guys we'll sign will be cut more from the Mark Fistric and Jerred Smithson cloth than the Nathan Hortons or Mark Streits of the world.

I'd LOVE Pascal Dupuis here. But I doubt he'd be willing to come to a retooling team, and we know how he feels about Buffalo, NY from 24/7.

SBPC and I have been clamoring for Gordon for some time now. He'd be a great add to our bottom-6. But he's such a Tippet-style player, I wouldn't be surprised if the Yotes re-signed him.

moltenlava26 04-04-2013 09:22 AM

I want the kids to play the entire year in buffalo. I would rather they take their lumps at the NHL level and learn the speed of the game. Pom got a nice return. Miller should provide another good return during the offseason, then decide on vaneks future at the trade deadline. These kids might surprise. Would it be that terrible to let armia/grigs/Larson/Hackett get a year of NHL experience? If they tank, you get a Better pick, and if they impress, it only gives us fans more hope.

If you add, you need a Grier type player with some gas left in the tank for a season or two

Chainshot 04-04-2013 09:42 AM

Of note, Horton has a personal beef with Kaleta and I doubt he'd sign in Buffalo regardless of how much cash they throw at him.
