jonas gustavsson not receiving another nhl contract?

Never been impressed with him in Toronto and it seems he is more or less the same in Detroit. Prove me wrong

FloydTheBarber 04-05-2013 09:13 PM

Somehow Brian Elliot got another chance after his Colorado stint.

Even Ty Conklin found a home as a steady backup after the 2006 Finals.

It's too hard to say if he wont find another job.

intangible 04-05-2013 09:17 PM

Even Garon got a new contract. And Clemmenson. Plenty of bad goalies in the NHL.. Gustavsson is amongst them.

caley 04-05-2013 09:19 PM

I actually wouldn't be terribly surprised to see him bought out this summer. He might get another shot, but he just really isn't displaying NHL ability.

XX 04-05-2013 09:21 PM

I could see Phoenix taking a flyer on him if Mike Smith is lost to UFA. Curious to see what Sean Burke could do for him.

Hank4Hart 04-05-2013 09:22 PM

gus is a good goalie. just keeps getting hurt before he can get into a roll

Stephen 04-05-2013 09:25 PM

I think he sucks, but I also think he gets one more shot at redemption in Calgary or Phoenix who can use a reclamation project in net.

Fricking Burkie.

Or Toronto

I remember hearing a lot when he was in Toronto about how he had been separated from his previous goalie coach. The result being that he went from being a goalie that was mobile and athletic to a goalie that uses his size to be in front of the net. What ever came of this?

detredWINgs 04-05-2013 09:42 PM

He's signed through 2014. And he won't be bought out.

Unless Sean Burke is a sports psychologist, he can't help Jonas Gustavsson.

Not really. Jonas Gustavsson was always mobile and athletic, but often to his own disdvantage. He'd overreact, lose his composure and get scrambly on fairly routine looking plays, which made him look like he was in even less control of the situation. As a goalie, I think he lacks hockey sense since he seemed to play on instinct.

Agreed, though Mike Smith was also a little bat**** crazy and a basket case as well...

I can see Phoenix taking a chance on him..

I don't know about that. If he can keep Jason LaBarbera in the NHL, he could likely help Gustavsson. He played well against the Coyotes. I'm not sure if that was a fluke, but he looked legit. His stats say he is a pretty bad goalie on an average team.

J22* 04-05-2013 10:06 PM

The Wild will get him so they can run a tandem of Jonas Gustavsson and Johan Gustafsson in Houston next year.

I'm not sure Smith was forced to play a style that wasn't suited to his strength the same way Jonas was. He certainty wasn't left out to dry like Jonas was, playing a heavy load behind a terrible team with heavy restrictions as to how he was permitted to play. In simpler terms, I don't think Mike Smith was as damaged by his previous team as Gustavsson was.

Gustavsson really needs AHL time where he's told to "just stop pucks" so he can get back to what he was when he first came over. He has talent.

Not in the NHL he's not.

He often has no idea where he is in relation to the goal. That's not a good thing if you're the goalie.

He dives around to stop pucks most goalies have no trouble with. He is terribad with angles and rebounds.

Losing Joey MacDonald on waivers so we could bring Gustavsson back from IR was just...

Feaster got a goalie who is better than anyone he has (this year) and Holland cut loose a better backup than the one he has right now.

I still don't know why MacDonald never got a fair shake, even after he appeared to have taken the job from Conklin (after Conklin was brought back for a second, horrible, stint).
