2013-2014 Rosters: Re-arrange the chairs on this sinking ship
All right so I was sitting here playing with the cap calculator on capgeek to see what we'll be working with next season. I figured Hornqvist, Bourque, Blum, Josi, Spaling, Halischuk, Bartley, Mueller, Yip and maybe Mason will be re-signed (I included Mase just for the hell of it on mine). I also did not include FF yet.
My Custom Lineup
Taylor Beck ($0.887m) / David Legwand ($4.500m) / Colin Wilson ($2.000m)
Gabriel Bourque ($0.775m) / Mike Fisher ($4.200m) / Patric Hornqvist ($3.250m)
Sergei Kostitsyn ($3.000m) / Nick Spaling ($1.100m) / Chris Mueller ($0.550m)
Craig Smith ($2.000m) / Paul Gaustad ($3.250m) / Matt Halischuk ($0.866m)

Now let's have some fun!
I say we go after Ribeiro.
those RFAs won't be that cheap
Yeah we will probably be adding a top 6 forward in free agency and probably another defenseman (Tollefsen?). I can also see Austin Watson making the jump up at some point next season and I suspect Forsberg will make the team as well.
And I realize the line up won't make the playoffs. It's the same line up as this year. The point is that is what we have to work with, so let's work with it.
My question is this: let's just say the Preds suck enough for a top 10 pick and said pick can get on the team, where's the roster room coming from?
That's assuming Beck to Milwaukee, Butler on 2-way deal.
OKT (whatever order) is in the mix, might want to assume Ekholm. Does Nashville jettison Gill and one of Blum and Ellis?
Mason aint coming back Smith is a UFA
Of course the real WTS moment could be NSH wins the lottery and trades Weber...
I don't see Yip being re-signed. Beck has played well and I think we only have room for one energy guy and that's Clune.
When is Tollefsen signing and if he is when can we expect him? next season?
Excited for this team's future years.
I see us trying to move Blum/SK+2nd for a mid/late first, so that clears up one spot.
We have the cash to target a top 6 forward and a top 6 defenseman. Doesn't mean we'll get them, but we have the cash to. I vote for Horton/Ribiero and Leopold/Scuderi.
Again, assuming Blum is traded to move up in the draft. It's good that we have 4 NHL Fs and 3 NHL Ds that are off the roster. We need depth. One thing I think Poile needs to address this summer, particularly if we lose Smith, is adding some depth in net. If Rinne got hurt this year, we would have been done for.
we absolutely must acquire an established, NHL top 6 winger this summer.
we will not get an NHL ready player in the draft unless we win the lottery and pick 1st, and I will be pleasantly surprised if Forsberg is ready next year but Im not holding my breath
I think ownership will give Poile a pass for this season because of the lockout and such, but I think they will make him understand that it had better not happen again next season
We cannot have the boarderline talent next year we do this year.
Only one of Blum/Bartley/Gill
Only 3 of Spaling/Yip/Halishuk/Clune/Gaustad/Mueller/Smith
Need to upgrade SK.
Might wait for Gaustad's first injury before we call Watson. Gaustad will be injured though so no worries there.
3 of the other guys Assume Clune/Gaustad/Spaling
Ellis/Gill or Bartley
Sk + Blum + Ellis + 1st For Bobby Ryan + Sbisa
Weber - Josi
Klein - Ekholm
Bartley - Sbisa
I also like Legwand/Fisher down on the 2nd and 3rd lines where they belong.
Still looks thin on forward talent though. I think I'm just jealous after watching the Hawks today. Not even fair how much front-end talent they have.
I would not go penciling in Forsberg just yet, nor make any assumptions about our potential 1st rounder this year, especially with the way this organization tends to groom prospects.
Beck should get a legit shot to make the squad out of camp.
Also, no way Anaheim takes that, they are giving up the two best pieces in that deal.
The UFA Forwards i'am interested in are:
Ribeiro, but i don't think we will get him.
Horton, Flippula and/or Ryder are more realisic IMO, if they make it to UFA-Market. We defenitly have the Cap-Space to sign them.
Elias would also be a good option, even through he is old but i think a 1-2 year deal would be good but i don't think he would sign an 1-2 years deal.
I don't think Jagr has much left but h would be a good mentor for our young forwards.
I think Trotz will try Wilson as Center next season. He already wanted to do it this season but he didn't because there was't a training camp this season. Hopefully he can continue his beast mode from this season
Fisher and Legwand will most likely remain both, but hopefully will center the lines 2 and 3 if Wilson can gain Trotz trust at Center.
Both played better recently and i hope they don't suck again at the beginning next season.
Beck and Bourque will likely progress next season with more expirience and a full camp.
I would love to give Smith another Chance but there is no space for him at my lineup, so i would trade him with SK
i like Kostitsyn but i think he should be traded with other pieces for an Upgrade.
Hornqvist defently must be resigned, he is so important. Gives 110% every shift.
I can see Watson making the Team out from Camp and i cann see him form a great Shutdown-Line with Gaustad and Spaling.
Forsberg should also make the team at some point during the season. Play him in the Top 9 or 6 ( lines 2 and 3 will almost get the same icetime) and give him PP-Time.
Keep one of Yip/clune/Mueller as your 13th Forward
Maybe Budish will spend some time in Nashville if there are too much injuries but i would like him to spend a season in Milwaukee
So my Forward Lineup would be:
PP2: Choose 2 Players from the Top 9 and Hornqvist
Now let's go the the defense.
Josi is going to be resigned and continue to progress.
Weber should and will stay.
But we need a Top 4 PMD. Ellis and Blum aren't ready for it yet and Bartley looks more like a good bottom pairing guy. Ekholm is a wild card.
I think Streit would be a good UFA-Option to play with Klein.
We have 5 guys for the bottom pairing next season:
Ellis,Blum, Bartley, Gill and Ekholm should also be ready.
3 of them should be kept the rest should be traded.
I would keep Gill as the 7th Dman and Mentor.
Now it's geting tough. I think Ekholm should be kept for sure.
I would like him to play with Ellis because i think Ellis has the highest celling and could really help our Powerplay, but he also has the most trade value. So maybe we have to loose him to get our Top 6/3 Forward.
So after Ellis i would keep Blum and trade Bartley.
So our Defense would be:
In Goal Rinne is our number 1. Keep Mason or sign an other cheap Backup.
Give hellberg an other year at Milwauke.
So we have Sk+Smith+Ellis+Bartley+Halischuk+Butler and picks to trade for a Top6 and eventually move up at the draft or to trade for an other first Round-Pick.
We'll likely pcik around 5-10. Jones, Drouin, Barkov, Mackinnon are likely gone but there is still great talent out there for example Lindholm.
I think with the progression and the more experience from our younger players, the addition of 2 Top 6 Players and 1 Top 4 Players via one Trade and two UFA signings and a full Traing Camp, this should be a much better team.
I dont't think Streit to Nashville is too unrealistic, neither is Horton.
Streit and Josi are both from Swiss, are from the same Team (SC Bern) and played there together as a pairing during the lockouts and Josi said during an interview with an swiss newspaper that both are good freinds and he would love to play with him. Maybe he can convince him
Making a deal with Anaheim is interesting. Going into next season they have a little over $10m in cap space, but we also know that Anaheim is a budget team. Maybe they spend to the cap. Maybe they don't.
They need to sign three forwards and a defenseman, at least. Maybe if we switch out Blum or Ellis for another forward?
Hornqvist (sign and trade) + SK + Ellis + 2013 1st for Ryan.
Anaheim gets back two forwards who can play their second line, plus a PM defenseman who works the PP AND they likely get a decent pick in the draft.
And if we don't trade away our first pick I wouldn't mind seeing us go after Lindholm in the draft (if we can't get Barkov or MacKinnon, which is unlikely).
We're overpaying. That makes us a worse team. I'm not moving that 2013 1st for almost anything. I think Hornqvist+Ellis+SK is still a bit much, but more fair.
Bobby Ryan has a ton of skill. He is guaranteed 30 goals per season if he plays at least 70 games. At 26, he fits into Poile's desire to get younger up front, but without going through the growing pains of bringing in talent from Milwaukee.
We can leave Sbisa out of it if they don't want to give up another roster player (they'd have to sign another defenseman). Maybe swap 1sts.
Maybe change Ellis out for Blum, or leave the 1st off (or swap firsts like I mentioned).
