Weird Elbow Pads Issue

I have always had problems with keeping my elbow pads in place. They have a tendency to slide toward my forearm. It's kind of annoying to try and shift them back. Anyone else have this issue and perhaps figured out some solutions?

That's a pretty common issue. What type of undershirt do you wear? Long sleeve or short and what type of material is it?

Ozz 04-09-2013 09:31 AM

I deal w/it too. Bought a new pair of pads that had better strapping, same problem.

A guy on my team has this issue and the one thing I've noticed that is different between him and I is that he wears a long sleeve compression shirt. The material is that sweat wick stuff that almost seems slippery. I on the other hand wear a long sleeve under armor loose fit shirt. It is still a sweat wick shirt but it feels more like a regular shirt. I find that this is not as slippery and my pads don't move at all.

I also switched from a cheaper Easton elbow pad to a more high end Warrior. I have the Projekts from a couple years ago. The durability on them is not the greatest, the sling strap that goes across the middle breaks down quick. I had my mom sew it for my and reinforce it so it is good now, but you should not need to that. That same strap however is what makes these so great b/c they do not move at all when I'm on the ice.

These are the same ones with updated colors:

I wear a variety of long sleeve undershirts and only really have this issue when I wear the lycra/compression tops. I have an old-school polo top (the light blue/navy blue ringer top) and an RBK Speedwick top (a more cotton-like moisture wicking material) and when I wear either of those, I don't experience the slipping as much.

Consequently, the compression tops keep me a lot cooler than the latter. So depending on the time of year, I have to make sacrifices. :(

Haha, pretty much the exact same post. I think we might be onto something.

I wear a short-sleeve undershirt and get the elbow pad slip.

AIREAYE 04-09-2013 10:11 AM

Slippage can be caused by either a poorly fitted elbow pad (too shallow, incorrect shape to your elbow etc.), a poor strapping system, a worn down strapping system or a combination of all.

Some undershirts have a grip print along the arms for precisely this reason. If you really like your pads, I would try these on with them at the store and see if it helps. Otherwise, you should consider new pads that fit better.

If you wear a long sleeve undershirt try to turn the cuff up over the bottom of your elbow pad. That will help it stay in place.

I usually wear Champion dri-fit sleeveless.

Probably will look into one of these long-sleeve less-slippery shirts... Otherwise perhaps I'll resort into checking out new elbow pads.

You might be able to tape the forearm area if you feel it's not tight enough.

This is the one I wear.

maybe try putting some rubberizing stuff (plasti-dip or something similar) in a few small spots on the inside of the pads? that should keep them from slipping around. it wouldn't take much.

McGuyver is more like it! ;)

Wear a loose fit long sleeve shirt. Once you put the pads on, take the extra sleeve and flip it over the forearm part of your elbow pads. Tape it up and boom, it will never slip, like a skate sock for your forearm.

TrueBlue86 04-10-2013 08:53 AM

I wear x40 elbows and have never had that issue. they always stay in place

my nike compression undershirt also has those 'sticky' things to keep pads in place (i think it's made for football) but i doubt that makes much of a difference

I'm saying! I would think the hockey industry would have figured something out for this by now!

Which elbow pads do you wear? My first pair did that and ever since I've had pads that have a strap going right across the inside of the elbow joint and no problems anymore.

Easton... Can't remember the type but they do have the inner elbow strap.

Wilch 04-15-2013 02:30 AM

I've tried three different elbow pads before that fitted well at the room but gradually started slipping.

It only happens on my left arm too. I've gone through a pair of Projekts, X40s and is currently using a pair of 9ks. All of them with the same problem.

I've concluded I have a weird left elbow and the only solution is sewing on a patch of velcro onto my left elbow and forearm to keep the pad in place.

snizzbone* 04-15-2013 04:35 AM

Like a few have said, fold the ends of your undershirt over the elbow pad like a cuff. Works pretty well.

Pajicz 04-15-2013 05:13 AM

I've had the same problem for some time, the pads tend to slide and turn a bit all the time...

Jarick 04-15-2013 10:20 AM

Another thing, put your elbow pad on when your arm is nearly straight. When it's bent, your muscles flex and expand.

biturbo19 04-16-2013 03:39 AM

Have you tried doing it up tighter?

leftwinger37 04-24-2013 07:29 AM

I just remembered this... A guy I used to play with wore the speedwick style undershirt with baggy sleeves (probably a size too big). He bunched up the excess shirt material in the elbow cap area. He said they never slide using this method. I've never tried this personally, but I just wanted to throw it out there.

Also, what about those compression things that guys wear over shin guards to keep them in place? The people I know that use them swear by them for their shins because it doesn't restrict movement as much as tape.
