If true, that's ****ed. I really don't like where this team is headed.

I like Howard, he's a good goalie, but he's not worth that kind of money. No goalie is, aside from a very select few (Lundqvist, Rinne).

Jurky 04-11-2013 10:14 AM

Yuck...

Chris 84 04-11-2013 10:19 AM

howard is underrated - by everyone except holland it seems.
seems like a big overpayment, and whilst i love jimmy, i am not happy about this. at all.

korrowan 04-11-2013 10:21 AM

I don't mind the 5.3 but I really hate the 6 years.

SoupNazi 04-11-2013 10:22 AM

I hate the term. A lot.

Ishad 04-11-2013 10:24 AM

Why so much hate on the term? Takes Howard to 35 and will be ending the last year Mrazek is an RFA.

mindfly 04-11-2013 10:27 AM

5.3M per year for a goalie who's proven WHAT? in the playoffs?

Absolutely terrible.

GoAwayDanCleary 04-11-2013 10:28 AM

Don't mind the salary, I think that's what he's worth. But that term...

The term would be fine, if the dollar amount wasn't so high. $4m for 6 years seems way mroe reasonable.

mindfly, you hate everything, so has Howard ever had a team in front of him that was good enough for him to "prove" anything in the playoffs?

He's a good goalie, but I agree that this is too much money for him.

RedWingNation11 04-11-2013 10:31 AM

I think 5mil over 4years would've been ideal maybe 3years

Yes, he should have better playoff statistics.

sully61 04-11-2013 10:32 AM

What has Mrazek proven? There's no guarantee that he becomes better than Howard. I'm ok with this deal, wish it was less money, but it is what it is. We need him. This doesn't mean Mrazek can't be a starter in the next 6 years either.

A hell of a lot more than Jimmy had at his age.

LeftBackLegend 04-11-2013 10:38 AM

This is what you get when you're in a poor negotiating position. There is no way we can let Howard walk, unless we go into full rebuild mode.

Zetterberg4Captain 04-11-2013 10:42 AM

knowing that both miller and luongo are available and both are better goalies we didnt HAVE to sign Jimmy for 6 years at that rate, thats bulsh...

That's not how GM's think, they go by who is good now. Mrazek isn't as good as Howard now, he may never be.

GM's take a lot into account. Nothing is set in stone.

Big Poppa Puck 04-11-2013 10:48 AM

:shakehead

$5+m is a lot for any Goalie in a cap world, let alone Jimmy Howard.

InjuredChoker 04-11-2013 10:48 AM

I don't like the term.

I'd be ok with the term if it was around 4.5 mil.

But this was around what we expected.

GT500x 04-11-2013 10:48 AM

I'm not sure how I feel. I don't like signing players past the age of 33 but I won't get mad.

You'd take Luongo over Jimmy, with the contract he has? Miller might be another story, but given our recent track record of acquiring players, I wouldn't count on it.

14ari13 04-11-2013 10:50 AM

Boooooooooooooooooooooo, this is so stupid.

Reports that #redwings are close to 6 yr, deal worth $5.3 million per season. GM Holland says sides are no closer to pact than a week ago.

Chuck Pleiness ‏@wingsfrontman 3 min
Hold off on Howard signing soon. GM Ken Holland texted and said sides aren't any closer than they were a week ago.
