Niittymäki retires

According to eliteprospects, Frank has officially retired from hockey. I really liked him.

FlyersFan61290 04-12-2013 09:28 AM

My favorite flyers goalie in recent memory. If only he could have stayed healthy...

nevermore 04-12-2013 09:30 AM

Sad to hear. Niitty was the reason I became a Flyers fan in the first place.

SolidSnakeUS 04-12-2013 09:35 AM

Always a fan of his. Hope he has a long, healthy life outside of hockey.

FreshPerspective 04-12-2013 09:35 AM

He should file a lawsuit against McCrossin :sarcasm:

AaronTrieu 04-12-2013 09:36 AM

Sign him

Other notable in Niitty's career:

Early career
First goaltender to record an overtime goal in North American pro-hockey (11 April 2004)
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for first goal by a goaltender
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for lowest career GAA (2.19 GAA)
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for lowest GAA during the postseason (1.75 GAA in 2005)
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for most saves in a period during a playoff game (23 saves, 1st period, 29 April 2005)
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for most saves in the postseason (611 saves in 2005)
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for most shutouts in a season (7 SO in 2003–04)
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for most shutouts in the postseason (3 SO in 2005) tied with Neil Little
Philadelphia Phantoms' franchise record for most wins by a goalie in a season (33 wins in 2004–05)

NHL
National Hockey League record for most consecutive wins, current streak and lifetime, and most lifetime undefeated wins, against a single team, for his streak of 17–0–0 against the Atlanta Thrashers tied with Chris Osgood (whose streak is against the Tampa Bay Lightning)
Philadelphia Flyers' franchise record for most saves in a game (54 on 5 January 2008)
Philadelphia Flyers' franchise record for first shootout win (6 December 2005)
Philadelphia Flyers' franchise record for most losses by a goalie in a season (29 in 2006–07) tied with Bernie Parent
Tampa Bay Lightning's franchise record for most saves in a game (47 on 25 March 2010)

 he owns the record for most saves in a game for two different NHL franchises, that's pretty cool actually. How many other goalies can say that.

It's a real shame he couldn't stay healthy.

Always liked Niitty, sad to see him retire.

Curufinwe 04-12-2013 01:10 PM

I always liked Niitty. It's a shame he never quite developed into a true starter.

mantis toboggan 04-12-2013 01:37 PM

Ah I loved nitty! Wish he couldve stayed healthy.

HeadShot 04-12-2013 02:31 PM

If his hips stayed in shape I wouldn't call Nitty a Titty

TheDrizzle81 04-12-2013 04:11 PM

Thoughts on bringing him in as goalie coach? Fits flyers for a front office job lol

Cardds 04-12-2013 05:07 PM

I'll always remember his first three starts in the NHL back in 2004 that were all shutouts, most notably one of them being against the Devils.

I always loved to scream his name out when he made a save.

Niittymäki! Bobrovsky! Inzaghi!

I just love screaming peoples name which end in iiiii!

OzFlyer 04-14-2013 03:18 AM

Nitty was amazing in the 2006 Olympics. MVP on a Silver Medal team!

GKJ 04-14-2013 08:00 AM

One of my favorites. Too bad he wasn't as good of a goaltender as I had hoped though.
