Las Vegas Arena: 20K seats, 2016 opening, AEG & MGM developers

"Our extensive sports and music assets, together with our global network of venues, including arenas in key West Coast markets such as Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Los Angeles and San Diego, will allow us to maximize booking and operations opportunities," AEG president and CEO Tim Leiweke said in a statement.

Added MGM Resorts chairman and CEO Jim Murren: "This new facility would be an extension of our entertainment legacy and continue our leadership position in the worlds of boxing, sports, concerts and other events that drive significant visitation and revenue to Las Vegas. AEG’s dominant position in arena development, programming and management makes it an ideal partner for this venture."

The arena is anticipated to be financed with equity contributions from each of the partners as well as private third-party financing. Murren said the project “is already driving strong interest from potential investors.”

The companies said design and planning is “well under way,” and the partners were to begin seeking appropriate approvals immediately.

MGM Resorts also operates the Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and The Mirage in Las Vegas. The arena would add to AEG’s portfolio of high-profile properties that includes Staples Center in Los Angeles, The O2 in London and buildings in Berlin, Shanghai, Sydney and Stockholm.

AEG’s concert division AEG Live books acts at The Joint, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino venue in Las Vegas, and The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

LAS VEGAS, March 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) and AEG today announced the companies have entered into an agreement to pursue the development of a privately funded, 20,000-seat indoor arena in Las Vegas on land located west of the Las Vegas Strip, between New York-New York and Monte Carlo.

The arena will be the centerpiece of a complete revitalization of the area between New York-New York and Monte Carlo, extending from Las Vegas Boulevard to Frank Sinatra Drive. The overall project will involve new retail shops, dining and entertainment offerings, both between the two properties and along their frontage on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

Jim Murren, MGM Resorts Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "This project will help our company optimize our existing assets at New York-New York, Monte Carlo, CityCenter, and beyond. This new facility would be an extension of our entertainment legacy and continue our leadership position in the worlds of boxing, sports, concerts and other events that drive significant visitation and revenue to Las Vegas. AEG's dominant position in arena development, programming and management, makes it an ideal partner for this venture."

Announced six weeks ago (note the 3/1/13 dateline)... has there been ANY followup or coverage? Any approvals? Any actual motion? We've seen these kinds of announcements go nowhere before in Vegas, haven't we?

EDIT: Did a little digging -- not directly related, but this article from today has in it claims that the Maloofs have "for months" looked at buying an NHL franchise, with Vegas as a possible destination - http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.c...tle-deal-dies/

I spoke with a director at one of the firms involved on Wednesday. He said it was a done deal.

Major4Boarding 04-12-2013 03:54 PM

I was gonna say... that had to be an old announcement because Leiweke is gone from AEG

Tinalera 04-12-2013 04:00 PM

Will avoid the obvious relocation joke ;)

I guess this starts up speculation again about Vegas getting a franchise-now we know when expansion will be-2016! (Couldn't avoid THAT one) :sarcasm:

Big McLargehuge 04-12-2013 04:15 PM

[Insert Colorado Avalanche joke here]!

Nuclear SUV 04-12-2013 05:17 PM

Vegas has quickly turned into a college basketball tournament hotspot. I would expect to see the Pac-12 move their tourney to this venue.

HansH 04-12-2013 05:27 PM

I edited my above post - there's a link there to reporting that claims the Maloofs may be interested in the NHL in Vegas as owners...

I wonder if MGM and AEG have any desire to be business partners with the Maloofs in such a venture?

LeafShark 04-12-2013 05:28 PM

Seattle and Houston are better American locations, but then the list severely drops off. Vegas isn't too bad of a location considering the other alternatives.

Tinalera 04-12-2013 05:31 PM

I thought this awhile ago and I think it now: the experiment of making season tickets for NHL games part of vacation packages with hotels/casinos :naughty:

They want their money and they want to pursue another professional sports franchise in Major League Baseball or the NHL, hence their 5 p.m. deadline today for the Sacramento-based investors to submit a written matching offer for the Kings.

[...]

The Maloofs have met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and have for months looked into buying a hockey franchise, with Las Vegas among the possible destinations. Their interests also have expanded and included opportunities in Major League Baseball.
the maloofs have been in contact with the NHL for months and they want to get their money out of Sacramento ASAP?

Be nice to see if there is more to this story-Maloofs wanting NHL franchise, that's a new one on me. Seattle or Vegas?

Maybe the very first question is: Does the NHL wants the Maloofs?

Albuquerque. The Albuquerque Turkeys (named after the family) will play at the proposed Estadio Los Pollos Hermanos near downtown.

Shrimper 04-12-2013 06:02 PM

If they don't get an NHL team then what else would the stadium be used for?

I don't see them getting 20k if they only get an ECHL or AHL or other league team.

Hang on. Could the Las Vegas Wranglers move there?

scotchex 04-12-2013 06:03 PM

Pro sports in Vegas is inevitable. An arena sport makes the most sense since the arena can be used for other events. Outdoor stadiums have the problem of ... it not being very fun to be outdoors in Vegas. Vegas is a great city -- as long as you have air-conditioning. And ice dancing and figure skating shows are surprisingly popular, especially with women. I bet Cirque du Soleil could do good business with some crazy ice skating acrobatics show.

well, the wranglers (and the lingerie football league's sin) arena in paradise is just 10 years old and sized appropriately for the league (~7.5k). I doubt they'd move.

absent of a pro team (NHL/NBA), the new arena would be used to lure tournaments (NCAA basketball, hockey), and as a larger venue in las vegas for events they already have there (boxing, mma, concerts).

madhi19 04-12-2013 06:07 PM

A lot of peoples are smelling the blood in the water of the new CBA. They did not do enough with revenue sharing and cost control to keep all the bottom feeder afloat. The floor still tied to the cap and after one drop next season it going to rise again and soon overtake this year cap. I expect a feeding frenzy of buyers circling relocation prospect soon. Especially if the league finally move out of Glendale.

The New Las Vegas Arena is a description of a 20,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States that is currently in the planning stages. It originally had a planned opening date in 2010...Construction has not begun and the actual date of groundbreaking is uncertain....
The project is still active with presentations being made to the Clark County Commission and plans for a ballot initiative to help fund the project.
Doesn't sound like any kind of "done deal" to me...?
