Hours after LeBlanc was named as the Hobey Baker Award winner Friday, the Chicago Blackhawks announced they have agreed to terms with the St. Cloud State forward on a one-year contract.

LeBlanc (6-foot, 195 pounds) will report to the Blackhawks and wear No. 14.
Figured it was thread-worthy for a Hobey Baker Award winner.

ColePens 04-12-2013 10:57 PM

Thread worthy just based on how freaking awesome this weekend was for the kid. :yo:

couture23 04-12-2013 11:07 PM

Wait, he's reporting to the Blackhawks? Or the Icehogs?

VinnyC 04-12-2013 11:14 PM

No one could give him more than a year? Huh. Good for the Hawks, though.

Minnesota 04-12-2013 11:15 PM

Congrats to Drew. Topping this weekend off with an NHL contract must be awesome.

That's it! I was trying to remember this guy's name, but I ...

Blackhawks. I assume he'll get to Chicago and they'll decide if he plays in his first game, sits in the box, or eventually gets sent to Rockford.

Blackhawkswincup 04-12-2013 11:22 PM

Maybe with season winding down they let kid get a game or two in

Good experience for the kid and keeps Pirri/Morin/etc in Rockford for playoff push

Surly Furious 04-12-2013 11:23 PM

The kid deserves a Masterson, and he hasn't even played an NHL game yet. Outstanding for him, and Chicago. :handclap:

Probably an easy decision when a team as good as Chicago offers you an NHL job

One year is all he can get due to his age.

Good one.

From the sounds of it, he stayed a 5th year just to play hockey with St. Cloud. A leg injury knocked him out for the season in his 4th year.

Definitely wasn't due to his grades since he has a 3.6 GPA and won a student athlete award, and it's rumored he had pro offers despite the injury, so it's not like he didn't have options.

Great story and congrats to LeBlanc. Had previous appearances at the Hawks prospect camp. Looking forward to seeing what he can produce in the Hawks organization.

As far as the 5 yr comment, he was a redshirt freshman and had a leg injury his senior year. Hawks have no problem with overagers. Andrew Shaw and more recently Garrett Ross by example.

I'd imagine the Hawks probably offered him at least a game this year in order to sign him, which (with the 1-year deal) will also make him an RFA in the summer like Jeremy Welsh signing with the Canes last year.

Ah, didn't realize he was already 23.

Interesting that Hawks had just recently dealt another LeBlanc, Peter, to Caps. They, however, do not seem to be related - Drew is American and Peter is Canadian.
