Felix the cat or cujo?

leafs fan growing up and i remember a goalie by the name of Felix potvin came out of no where and took the league storm, had 2 great years when he helped take the leafs to 2 conference finals, he was very exciting to watch, unorthodox style, but dude put on a show, i remember as kids we would imulate his hotdog splits glove saves haha.

And then after we got another darn good goalie, Curtis Joseph. Went from cat to dog. Cujo was beastin too, helping us to 2 conference finals as well. Had a lot of big games as well.

Leaf nation, who do you like as leafs goalie more, potvin or Joseph ?

ChesapeakeRipper 04-15-2013 01:43 AM

Cujo. Never saw Potvin play for the leafs (was too young). one of the worst days of my life when I heard he signed with the wings.

A1LeafNation 04-15-2013 01:44 AM

Cujo. We could have went all the way in 03 and 04 if he stayed.

RealisticLeaf55 04-15-2013 01:47 AM

Potvin. Would have won the cup if not for Fraser. Cujo ditched a decent team to try and win a cup with the Wings. Only to come back to the Leafs with his head in shame.

Starkiller 04-15-2013 01:50 AM

I'm gonna say Felix the cat, just because we went to game 7 against Gretzky and the kings. If we had of won that game it would of been a leafs Habs cup final. Actually, if we didn't run into Gretzky period in the conf finals that year we would of been in the cup finals!

I have to agree

agropop 04-15-2013 02:37 AM

Potvin was great, Cujo was better.

Kiotzu 04-15-2013 02:47 AM

Potvin for sure for me. Just always liked the dude.

LadyLeaf 04-15-2013 02:49 AM

Potvin was a bit before my time, so it's Cujo for me. I too was absolutely heartbroken from Cujo left for Detroit. I seriously felt cheated on.

Potvin was a very good goaltender on a better team. Cujo would steal you games that we had no reason being in. I remember a playoff series against Cujo (St Louis). The only reason it was a series was because of Cujo. I remember thinking to myself at that time - if we had that goaltender, we would have no problem winning the cup. I liked the Potvin team a lot better but Cujo at his peak was one of the best goaltenders I've seen & I saw this team win in '67.

I'd have to agree. I think a lot of people forget how fantastic Potvin was for those two seasons. He absolutely won games for the club, and he did it after making Grant Fuhr, a very capable Fuhr, expendable. Taking nothing away from Joseph who was obviously a gifted goalie, but with Potvin, you had a goaltender who would go through a wall (or Hextall) and who came up through the system.

When Joseph left Edmonton, he left a lot of fans feeling betrayed. Did the same thing in Toronto, when the club I believe was 3rd in offence...That's 3rd in offence, but Detroit was that much better, enough for him to decline a contract offer that would have made him the highest paid goalie in the league.

I felt betrayed by Joseph as well. Great goalie, but if I'm given a choice between Potvin and Joseph and the rubber comes down to the character of the tender inspiring the team, give me Felix Potvin, ten times out of ten.

Last time I checked, in a head to head, it was Potvin 1 Joseph 0 anyway.

bonjovi0308 04-15-2013 05:05 AM

What happened to Potvin after those 2 great years?? He became so inconsistent and he had some great games for other teams as well but his career was bascially over after leaving the Leafs

416Leafer 04-15-2013 05:31 AM

Cujo played behind a worse team and went just as far.

Lobstertainment 04-15-2013 05:41 AM

Potvin was my favorite Leaf growing up.

Felix the Cat

Daisy Jane 04-15-2013 06:14 AM

I preferred Eagles myself :D

(to be fair, didn't know anything about Potvin, and I was very upset when Joseph left). To me it felt more like a big screw-you Quinn because of what happened at Salt Lake too. we were totally capable of winning a cup with what we had had had he stayed.

Man Bear Pig 04-15-2013 06:25 AM

Potvin was my first jersey(I was about 5) and probably the first player I really liked. Problem is, he wasn't all that great after his first year or two. Cujo was the better goalie.

tml145 04-15-2013 08:09 AM

it depends if you are a Cat or Dog guy

ACC1224 04-15-2013 08:10 AM

Potvin got on a roll but really wasn't that good, so Joseph by default.

Belfour was considerably better than both.

TheTotalPackage 04-15-2013 08:12 AM

CuJo was the better goalie, but Potvin will always hold a bigger place in my Leaf fandom.

timlap 04-15-2013 08:21 AM

Best Leaf goalies in my lifetime, imo, in order:

1) Belfour
2) Palmateer
3) Joseph
4) Potvin

None of them were great for a long time (for us, anyway).

Damn right. I still have my unworn Felix the Cat mask style hat in my closet, mint condition.

KuleminFan41 04-15-2013 08:37 AM

Potvin was only great for 2 seasons , after that he wasn't really anything and we even missed the playoffs in his final 2 seasons for the Leafs. Curtis Joseph was the better goalie for sure

Over his career he was but not as a Leaf he wasn't.

Highly debatable, Belfour posted much better numbers than CuJo in both 03 and 04, and that was with an inferior defense corp. and not having a Lidstrom infront of him.

It certainly looked that way from where I sit.
