Cody Franson - one of the most underrated player in the league

He is such a solid player. He is #2 in points among the d-man on our team with 23 points in 38 games so far along with +8 and has been an impressive physical player with 104 hits. He has been using his size as an advantage, plays simple defensive, and Carlyle seems to trust him really well because he rarely makes any major mistakes. Yes, he is been on bottom pairing with Fraser but these two have been one of our better d-man's this year.

cough *Preds fans* cough, you guys told us he is a softy and doesn't use his size to his advantage.

At 1 million, his contract has been a steal.

vippe 04-15-2013 07:36 AM

To be fair, he was useless in the SEL as well. I dont blame Preds-fans one bit for saying those things about him, he was exactly the same here.

Good for him that he's doing well in Toronto this year though.

tml145 04-15-2013 07:56 AM

he is alot better than before

but he is mostly a PP specialist 3rd pairing Dman

Man Bear Pig 04-15-2013 07:58 AM

3rd pairing PP specialist. Nothing to see here.

'Rarely' isn't the word I'd use. The only names I've cursed more this season have been Kostka and Holzer.

HawkinMI 04-15-2013 08:02 AM

Lol, congratulations.

Penalty Kill Icing* 04-15-2013 08:02 AM

He isn't underrated so I won't pretend like one.

He is a bottom pairing defenseman on a playoff team and does his role pretty well.

The fact that the coach rather switches 2nd pairing defensemen instead of him should be an indicative of his steady defensive play though.

tml145 04-15-2013 08:03 AM

ok maybe a #4 Dman

Kreegz2 04-15-2013 08:04 AM

I haven't seen him play very much, But I picked him up based purely on stats after I had to drop Karlsson. He hasn't been disappointing me and I think he is definitely one of the more underrated D-Men in the league.

Wanted to say something like this, figured it wouldn't go over as well as coming from a fellow fan. Thank you.

Timbo Slice 04-15-2013 08:15 AM

Well at least you didn't say he was the best at something.... sort of....

olivertwist* 04-15-2013 08:15 AM

he's good on the pp good offensively and average defensively, i like him

Mr Manks 04-15-2013 08:23 AM

I like Franson. He does alot of things well. Basically leads defence on his team with shooting percentage and penalties drawn.

Stats01 04-15-2013 08:26 AM

Have really liked him this season, although he is set to get a big raise in the summer.

Phion Keneuf 04-15-2013 08:28 AM

Him and Fraser have been awesome this year

He's tremendous offensively.

Stats01 04-15-2013 08:29 AM

I'd like to add to my previous posts, he has one of the best point shots in the league IMO. Hard and accurate, he hits the net pretty much all the time, only reason he usually misses is because he purposely does it, either looking for a tip from a teammate or looking for a crazy bounce off the boards

Kulemon 04-15-2013 08:31 AM

If only he was as good as Dougie "Norris" Hamilton :sarcasm:

Nah but seriously he's been good this year but I'm sure almost every team in the league has a guy that's doing equally aswell that also isn't talked about.

Liminality 04-15-2013 08:43 AM

He's developed well under Carlyle, think that's all there is to it.

He's had the tools but he just needed help to put them together and play a style Carlyle was fond of.

Not one of the most underrated players but a good young player.

Viqsi 04-15-2013 08:48 AM

Congrats. Sounds like y'all have found Franson's niche and he's being used like he should be.

He's still not going to become a second-pairing-or-better warrior. :)

Ditto, glad a Leafs fan came out and said it. Kudos on the solid season, but maybe stick to one thread and discuss them all there.

triggrman 04-15-2013 09:00 AM

I've always liked Franson and wish we would have used Blum in that trade instead of Franson.

His shot has eyes I swear.

I never thought he was too soft, just too slow. Then we signed Gill and I got to see what slow really was.

MastuhNinks 04-15-2013 09:01 AM

Carlyle has certainly been using him effectively, not throwing him to the wolves at even strength, giving him a defense-first partner and using him a lot on the powerplay. He's 11th in defensive scoring right now (tied with the likes of Weber and Keith).

Having the shots of Phaneuf, Franson and Kessel on the outside on the powerplay to stretch out the penalty kill with JVR and Bozak in front of the net has really worked wonders, it's a really fun PP unit to watch.

I'd say he's already that good.

Love Franson. He rarely makes mistakes, is putting up a lot of points, using his size well, and has been probably our second best defenseman this season.

Him and Fraser have formed a really solid pairing, one that can be relied on in any situation. We've had all sorts of trouble finding decent partners for Phaneuf, and the "second pairing" is a revolving door it seems, all season long. Just because Franson is labelled as being on the third pairing, doesn't mean he is only a 5 or 6 guy.

Smokey McCanucks 04-15-2013 09:04 AM

He was good for Nashville, real good for Kelowna, couldn't play for Ron Wilson's awful Leafs teams though? Now Wilson is gone and suddenly Franson is good, who knew, all it took was actually, you know, putting him in the freaking lineup.

Franson has worked very hard on his skating with Barb Underhill and is now looking more like an NHL skater then he had in the past. He's also started to play his size and is no longer shy at taking the physical approach that Carlyle wants. I do agree that he is still a 5/6 type of Dman but he is edging closer to being a true 3/4 guy.
