Kurz: Niemi leading contender for Vezina?

KKurzCSN 11:54am via Twitter for Mac #SJSharks goalie Antti Niemi may just be the frontrunner for the Vezina Trophy csnbayarea.com/blog/kevin-kurů

Led Zappa 04-16-2013 02:00 PM

Implausible. Niemi is not an elite goalie.

Kitten Mittons 04-16-2013 02:01 PM

Niemi is not the #1 cop on the force.

Fixed :P

Seriously, he'll get robbed just like Nabby did. It's inevitable.

Actually, it would be funny if Nabby won it.

Well now, you've gone and got all serious.

I was being factious :wg:

Grave 04-16-2013 02:20 PM

He will have to post a shutout in every game left to win.

WTFetus 04-16-2013 02:25 PM

I don't remember that far back, but did Nabby really get "robbed"? Looking at the stats again, he had 2 more wins and 2 more SOs, but their GAA were pretty much equal, and Brodeur had a far better save percentage.

sjshark91 04-16-2013 02:38 PM

Shocked the NHL even knows San Jose is still in the league.

wishman 04-16-2013 02:43 PM

Gotta go with Bob!

hateseed 04-16-2013 02:49 PM

That article is funny, because no matter how much Niemi may deserve to be in the conversation, the article itself is Kurz attempting to put Niemi in the convo, he didn't write it because he already is.

Look at the standings.
Now look at the Sharks ROW.
Now look at the Sharks points.
Niemi.
QED.

Those are the candidates a I see them. Lundqvist likely doesn't have enough shutouts and his team won't make the playoffs. I think it will come down to these last few games and whether the Jackets make the playoffs or not. It's damn close.

Yea, west coast teams never get the media attention Canadian and teams from the North East do. I don't think he'll win it for that reason.

rangerssharks414 04-16-2013 03:40 PM

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if it's between Bobrovsky, Lundqvist and Rask. That's the top three in GVT, and if voters look at advanced stats, they won't vote for Niemi. Heck, Craig Anderson missed so much time, yet he's still ahead of Niemi in that stat.

To me, save percentage is the most important stat. Wins are useless to me. Workload is also an important "trait" I guess for a Vezina winner. I honestly don't think Niemi is worthy of a top three spot right now (see the three names above), but if he plays very well in these final few games, he could sneak into the top three.

magic school bus 04-16-2013 03:49 PM

Thank God he has a Cup ring. It might give him some clout here, but I'm pretty sure they'll give it to Lundqvist.

Juxtaposer 04-16-2013 03:51 PM

The nominees are going to be Lundqvist, Rask, and Crawford. Nemo and Bob will get robbed. Book it.

Puck Daddy doesn't.

That wouldn't surprise me at all considering the markets they play in.

Agreed. They're not giving it to Bobrovsky.

Sleepy 04-16-2013 04:29 PM

Lundqvist wins unless the Rangers miss the playoffs.

Wins count because they illustrate the sample size. A goalie with a .925 sv% and 50 wins in 75 games played is more impressive than a goalie with a .930 and 20 wins and 30 games played. The voters seem to take wins into account, SV%, Shutouts and GAA (probably in that order) when voting. Niemi's combination of a ton of games played, lead league in wins, coupled with his SV% and shutouts puts him in the top-3. Plus, as Randy pointed out, they generally won't award it to a non-playoff team.

It can be justified for goalies both ways either the goalie you want to win has a very high win total and just OK numbers and you can say he is clutch or you can have a goalie you like, have good numbers, save%, for example but not a lot of wins and you could say he kept them in games... this award is more reputation and team based, that is, an original six or big media influenced than most of the awards although all have some extraneous influences.

Yeah I was pissed when he didn't win it that year, he deserved it more than Brodeur that year but of course Brodeur won it because he's Martin Brodeur and he plays in the East.

Squeeven 04-16-2013 04:55 PM

Funny I just voted on a poll on this same topic. Nemo really gets no love around the league like the rest of the team as a whole.

You have to admit, it is refreshing that Kurz is not saying something that is totally and utterly obvious.

As to Niemi, I would expect Kurz to say:

Quote:

Niemi is a goalie who plays for the Sharks.
Quote:

Way way, way inside information: Antti Niemi is from Finland
