NHL News/Notes part 11

Meanwhile, the news is leaked that there are planned SIX outdoor games for next season. (And the Sharks aren't involved in any.)

Kinda have to think they might be holding out to host at new 49er stadium when it opens.

And the NHL has officially announced rescheduling of 4/15 Boston-Ottawa game as 4/28 7pm ET. (Only game on the slate)

I hate how Anaheim gets an outdoor game and we don't.

Blah.

I doubt the Sharks (or any team) is holding themselves out of an outdoor game. If the events are NOT a joke by the time they get the Sharks in there, and there is talks for Sharks to host, AT&T would just be too awesome to pass up. Also would be nice to have a regular season game back in SF, I think it would be good marketing for the Sharks to have that kind of event in a meaningful game in SF. Having said that, now that there are 6 games in a season, now Pac division teams will NEVER play an outdoor game on Jan 1 and will be relegated to one of these other outdoor games.

So by the time the Sharks do play in an outdoor game (probably 2015 if this whole 6 games a year thing sticks), the whole mystique of an outdoor game will be gone (or diluted), not to mention with that many games, weather will be an issue and cause havoc with the NHL scheduler to make up dates and what not, so there is a chance all these extra outdoor games could be scraped before the Sharks ever get in it.

IMHO, I wanted the Sharks in a Winter Classic against an East team when it was the only outdoor game (or one of two with Heritage Classic). I don't want Sharks v. Coyotes (the matchup I would expect when finally the Sharks get an outdoor game if this NHL Stadium Series sticks) anywhere on some random day (read: not Jan 1) in March, 2015.

Rather have it at Giants Stadium. Nicer view.

I agree. I doubt they are holding themselves out because of the new niners stadium when they have AT&T as an option. Great stadium, great location, better outdoor hockey weather (still not great, but not hot like the South Bay).

LadyStanley 04-17-2013 04:13 PM

"Hot like south bay"? :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Maybe a difference of 3-5 degrees. (In winter)

I was talking about the March games (which last I checked counted as the spring). San Jose's weather was in the high 60s low 70s in March. San Francisco is consistently in the mid 50s.

Plus, that doesn't take away from the point that it'd be dumb to wait for the niners stadium when you have AT&T.

Rain is a bigger issue than temperature IMHO (SF or SJ or whatever). Remember they did that outdoor exhibition with Kings (Gretzky era) in Las Vegas once. SoCal doesn't get as much rain as NorCal.

Rain delayed the WSH/PIT Winter Classic IIRC.

LadyStanley 04-17-2013 04:56 PM

Who says they'll use water-created ice (and not some form of plastic)? :sarcasm:

Yes, I agree that the worst thing for a California outdoor (winter) game is rain.

I think that the Sharks would look for a late January or early February game, rather than a late March, were they to host.

Outlier. Most of the time it's in the low 60s , not mid 50s.

Why you gotta be like that man? You can't say "outlier" when you asked when was the last time. :p:
The first week of March this year was in the 50s. Over half of the days in March in 2012 were in the 50s.

Kitten Mittons 04-17-2013 08:25 PM

Only 7 days in the entire month were in the 50s. Last year, yeah, was colder. Anyways, screw you and your facts. I'm going home.

And in 2011, the majority of the month was in the 50s too. So if anything, 2013 is an outlier. :P
