Cheap, Passable Starter to Phoenix (Elliott, Vokoun, or the like)

Basically, I want somebody's back up that's affordable and decent to step in and be a starter for the Coyotes next season. I figure a passable goalie will probably do if Dave Tippett sticks around.

Any ideas for a sensible trade? By sensible I mean don't include OEL or any other outlandish nonsense. Also, go ahead and check any Luongo mentions at the door. Thanks.

SLAPSHOT723 04-19-2013 12:07 AM

Yeah Elliott seems like the best option for them, he's probably going to be available.

Nope, Halak will most likely be gone.

Phoenix will take him off your hands if you eat a million bucks.

emery?

How about Jonas Gustavsson? Maybe Sean Burke can do for The Monster what he did for another giant, terrible looking goalie who was a bit of a headcase.

As stated in our GDT, We are not a team that will eat salary. We have enough RFAs to be resigned and we would like to possibly upgrade on offense. Maybe if Halak+ is dealt for Miller at the deadline Elliott would become available. But for now, Halak just simply hasn't performed well enough to be paid like he is or keep his job for that matter.

I could see Hiller being moved but the price might be a little high for what you're looking for and, in divisional trades and whatnot.

Riptide 04-19-2013 01:19 AM

Guys who may be available:

Hiller (Fasth has out played him, and signed a 2 yr extension... no clue on the cost to acquire)
Reimer - IF and only if Toronto trades for Luongo. Otherwise, not a chance he's available. No clue on the cost to acquire.
Theodore
Biron (what kind of work load can he handle)
Bernier - cost to acquire - but cheap and young
Bryz (if bought out)
Backstrom (UFA - probably not cheap)

Neuvirth - cost to acquire. He's actually someone who I think Phoenix should really look into. He might not be cheap to acquire, but played 48 games 1 year (won 27 with good numbers - this was when Washington was playing defensive hockey) and played 38 the next year. If it wasn't for Vokoun and Holtby taking over, I'm sure he would have gotten a better look. Still young, and has potential to be a 1B type of starter.

I'd be looking at someone like him, then getting a solid backup (Theodore, Biron, Elliott).

rt 04-19-2013 01:25 AM

Neuvirth could work.

Given Phoenix's makeup and needs, i think Toronto might be a good fit for a hockey trade that financially benefits the Coyotes.

Scrivens + Frattin + 3rd for Klesla + Goncharov

Thinking is that Scrivens could definitely come into Phoenix and handle a platoon duty in a strong system. I think Frattin plays the type of hustle game that they play and could be a great fit beside Hanzal and Vrbata--plus he's cheap and won't be looking for a payday. Phoenix fills two holes--albeit small ones--by adding cheap talent in two positions, while Toronto solidifies theirs and the Marlies defence. I think Klesla would be a great addition to the Leaf dcore, and if he is able to gel with Phaneuf, could form a great top pairing.

Not sure how Phoenix feels about Gonch, but could this be the basis of a deal?

Yep, Blues for sure are not getting "bang for the buck" from Halak.

If we retained 1 mil of Luongo's salary, would something around Rundblad work?

Nope, don't like that contract. $5.714 MIL is too high for the Coyotes to take on...

You'd need to retain 50% through the life of the contract. Even then, my offer would be a 2nd round pick, NOT an ace prospect like Rundblad.

It's a fair offer, but I don't think Scrivens helps our starter situation. We've already got a good back up candidate in ochocinco.

I agree. And Smith wants 6+ mil a year, what a tool.

Coil 04-19-2013 08:43 AM

Bryzgalov. Should I add a :sarcasm:?

After buyout.

Don't get greedy now. I would offer a 2nd and Vancouver eats 1.5 mill.

I just looked on capgeek and his salary is 6.7mill. and cap hit is 5.3. rt is right, Vancouver can eat 50%.

rt 04-19-2013 08:55 AM

If the Coyotes move to Quebec than a Luo for Doan deal could make sense. I don't think a move happens this summer, though. I'm guessing we've got one more lame duck year. For that we will need a goalie, and it will not be Luongo.

What's the story on Jhonas Enroth?

I get the impression that most other GM's won't deal for Luongo until after free agency starts. To see whether or not the Canucks buy out Luongo and see who else is available. And trading Luongo within the division wouldn't be a good idea.
There will be buy outs (and I agree Bryz burned that bridge). If Luongo ends up in Florida, (RFA) Jakob Markstrom may be a viable option.

RJ8812* 04-19-2013 09:18 AM

You guys can have Bryz back
