J. Cowen for J. Eberle

I was asked about this one:

To EDM: Jared Cowen

To OTT: Jordan Eberle

Fills upcoming needs for both teams.

What do folks think?

Turrican* 04-19-2013 12:48 PM

As an Oiler fan, I'd want to see more out of Cowen before I wager a 76pt player.

Frank the Tank 04-19-2013 12:49 PM

I'll just politely say no and leave it at that.

Dick Whitman 04-19-2013 12:50 PM

I think Cowen needs one more good season before we can start asking for a player like Eberle. With that said, if he has Eberle value after that season, I'd probably want a more physical player of similar value.

Jack de la Hoya 04-19-2013 12:51 PM

Add Silfverberg.

That seems like fair value.

plikestechno 04-19-2013 12:51 PM

Cowen and this year's 1st? Let's sign the deal. Eberle's the only one of the big 4 I'd trade. I think 76 pts. is his ceiling and he's making big money for long term.

rockinghockey 04-19-2013 12:52 PM

I will admit Eberle had a bad season this year but Cowen is still unproven. Defense is a very hard position to master. Just ask Myers.

lakai17 04-19-2013 12:55 PM

what!?? no Lehner?

zeus3007* 04-19-2013 12:56 PM

I like Cowen, and he does fill a need, but the Oil would need another significant piece or two in this deal. Remember that Eberle was near a ppg player last year, and he's only going to get better. Cowen, another good young player or Ottawa's first, and a good role player would likely be the price.

NyQuil 04-19-2013 12:57 PM

Edmonton has to clear salary too though, no?

In any event, not particularly surprised by the response.

Uh, I doubt it. Teams have learned to play him tight. I think 76 pts. is the best he will ever be. He's older than the other guys.

Oilers don't need to clear salary though.

Ewww no. Lehner is untouchable and the future.

As for OP, Sens need Cowen more than Eberle. Even though its good value.

Turrican* 04-19-2013 01:00 PM

Our salary issue is absolutely fine.

Kevin8se7en 04-19-2013 01:04 PM

I like both Players and as a Sens fan I would make this deal.

Oilers should get more than just Cowen, even though he's quite good.

416Leafer 04-19-2013 01:05 PM

Ottawa could definitely do with adding a top line winger. But I don't think they can move Cowen, the longterm D is too thin after Karlsson. Gonchar is likely leaving after this season, and even if he resigns only has a year or two left at most. Phillips is getting older as well. Cowen is a key guy going forward for them.

IMO if Ottawa wants a top line winger, they'll either convert Z-Bad to a winger longterm and see how that works out, or potentially trade either Turris or Z-Bad for a winger, maybe move a 1st round instead.

Oh, and also Eberle is worth more than just Cowen.

ColoradoAvs 04-19-2013 01:05 PM

I think eventually this could work out but Cowen still needs to prove himself before the Oilers trade Eberle for him. Good Proposal though, Gj OP.

Pierce Hawthorne 04-19-2013 01:24 PM

As an outsider I knew before entering the thread the OP would be a Sens fan.

Really bad for the Oilers. A fairly significant pice would need to be added from the Sens side.

as another poster already mentioned, it would likely have to be Cowen and Silfverberg to even be considered.

i think if it were a straight up deal, then Eberle for Zibanejad would have to be the deal from the Oilers side....RNH and Zib as the top 2 centers would look fantastic for the future!!

Sens fans would probably rather trade you Zibanejad than Cowen and Silfverberg

lakai17 04-19-2013 01:36 PM

Edmonton have Marty Marincin and David Musil already, nevermind Klefbom.

I'll hold my breath on these guys until they're actual NHLers. We have all these D prospects that don't seem to develop to their full potential. Sometimes I wonder if we're just bad at developing D.

12/20 Oilers top prospects are defenceman, one has to pan out. We have time to develop them properly now a days.

He also has been playing with a broken finger for most of the year. And he's still putting points up at a good pace, even though he's struggled and had an injury that really affects your ability to control and shoot the puck. He'll bounce back.

bleed_oil 04-19-2013 01:44 PM

Cowen is garbage. He has chronic injury problems. Why the hell would we do that deal???

Yeah, but pan out in what regard? Most of them don't have top pair potential. The only ones that do are Klefbom, and maybe Marincin and Gernat, but Gernat is a long shot and Marincin needs at least another full year, maybe more, in the AHL. We have a lot of solid defense prospects, but not many who are potential stars.
