Martin Gernat Signed To 3-Year ELC

http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=666774

Coming off a great night (2G-3A-5PTS) in yesterdays Oil Kings game 2 victory.

I know there were whispers that perhaps Gernat and the Oilers did not see eye-to-eye and some were worried he wouldn't sign, but pen is put to paper and here we are.

Going to be a busy blueline in OKC.

Tad Mikowsky 04-20-2013 10:16 AM

I'm a big Gernat fan. He's gonna take time though

Jimmi Jenkins 04-20-2013 10:18 AM

I like it.

Valic 04-20-2013 10:20 AM

Excellent.

He seems to be coming along better after the injury. Been playing better in the playoffs from what I've seen. Still a few, lets say... Gaffes? from time to time but the offense has been more consistant.

oilers2k10 04-20-2013 10:27 AM

he's 6 foot 5, but only 191 lbs..he's a project for sure but one with a ton of upside

armandh01 04-20-2013 10:39 AM

What are his downsides other than weight as others are pointing out (hard to view it as a downside)? I don't get to watch OK much, can only read the stats at the end of a game. He always seems to have points and his +/- is really solid...I know not the be all end all of stats but I am genuinely asking. For example why is Musil better? (he is often touted as more complete).

BarDownBobo 04-20-2013 10:41 AM

Can he play with the OKs again next season? With him missing so much time this season, along with the crowded blue line in OKC that would probably be best for him.

Either way, happy about this, he's got a ton of potential.

Gernat still has issues defensively. He definitely gets caught out of position every now and then. He's a gambler. Gernat is unreal offensively though, he was almost a point per game last year as a rookie defenseman! Great on the PP.

Musil is pretty much the opposite of Gernat. He's a very strong, tough, defensive minded shut down type. Great on the PK.

In summary: Gernat: Offensive minded, very risky player.
Musil: Defensive minded, very safe player.

I don't understand how he stays so thin... It's like he's not even trying to add muscle. It just feels inevitable he has to fill out at some point.

There is this neat thing called genetics, check it out. Maybe he has some that doesnt allow him to add a lot of bulk...

He's 20. He'll fill out.

I'm sure he'll be working on it over the summer.

He also had an injury that required surgery and kept him out close to 6 months I believe, so he was likely unable to do much last offseason. We'll see what happens this offseason.

Me too. This is a project, but it's worth the try.

okgooil 04-20-2013 12:05 PM

No way he'll be on the team, taking a 20 year old and an import spot.

There's a better chance he's on the Oilers than the Oil Kings.

He'll be in the AHL, or ECHL.

oilphan 04-20-2013 12:21 PM

Could be a valuable addition in a trade as well.

AlowlyOilersfan 04-20-2013 12:31 PM

He's an exciting prospect, for sure.

Maybe one day, we'll see him and Marincin paired up in copper and blue.

All of our top 4 d prospects are LD and will all be on the Barons next year. Gonna be interesting to see how they split the minutes.

MeestaDeteta 04-20-2013 01:18 PM

Good signing, I see him as a Bergeron/Grebeshkov type of player for us, but having more size. Good 3rd pairing guy down the road, with powerplay time.

Moonlapse Vertigo 04-20-2013 01:21 PM

We saw the good and the bad of Martin Gernat last night. Ultimately, he had a big, big night offensively (2 goals, 3 assists) but he was also an adventure in his own zone during the first two periods. He's a project for sure.

Comrade Blunderbore 04-20-2013 01:24 PM

good. now Bigos' turn to put the pen to paper.

ales83fan 04-20-2013 01:37 PM

good. big MG fan.

He was a 5th rounder no? Meaning he is already trending positively.

He'll need time, but with that frame, it's only a matter of time before he is built. It will happen. I put on 20 pounds in 2-3 years after I turned 20 from working out, no reason to think he can't do the same.

It's harder than you think.

His NHL weight will have to be about 210-215 though, and even that's skinny for someone 6'5". Unreasonable to expect him to get up to 220-225.

Marty plays a lot on the right side for the Kings as far as I can remember.
