Selecting equipment to buy on the cheap

This year, after 10 years of not skating or playing, I've made it my mission to start playing hockey again. As a student, I'd like to buy my equipment on the cheap, but have a feeling that there are some things you shouldn't skimp on, like a comfortable helmet or skates that fit correctly. Which pieces of equipment should I buy used/discounted and which should I buy new?

read the equipment buyers guide at the top of the threads list. But generally the things you are going to need new will be skates, helmet, jock, gloves. Generally everything else equipment wise you could go used on. HockeyMonkey.com seems to have hockey socks and practice jerseys on the cheap all the time so no reason not to buy those new as well. Good luck!

It's really personal preference... What do you value more, protection of performance? No matter what your answer is, I would definitely not go cheap on the skates.
