Next playoff-bound Alberta team?

In your opinion, which will be the next Alberta team to make the NHL playoffs?

Despite recent struggles, I think it will be the Oilers, as the major pieces are in place (on the top two lines). We need to add some complementary pieces (bottom six forwards, toughness and a couple of defensemen) and I think McT will make some strides this off season.

I think the way the Flames are performing right now is a mirage, being done by a group of jacked-up kids who are excited to be in the Show. Our forwards and starting goaltender (assuming Kipper retires) are better. Both defences need a lot of work and McT knows and will address that.

If I had to bet, Id say there is a 70-per-cent chance that the next Alberta playoff team will be the Oilers. At the start of this season, I would have said that the Oilers will be there in 2013-14, but its not looking too favourable now so Id setting that back a year (crap). The Flames are a few years away.

Discuss.

Hmm do people actually see this year as a setback for the Oilers? I mean, what did they go and do last summer to improve this team? Nothing, they added two rookies.

Playoffs were a very high expectation. I don't agree with how they are playing right now, almost like they have all just mailed it in...but I don't necessarily see this year as a set back. I see this year as a opportunity to see what the team needs to be competitive.

After last year it was almost like the team figured "hey lets just do nothing and see where we are a year from now"...well now you know and now you know what needs to be added/fixed.

This summer is going to have to be HUGE for the Oilers organization.

Dabomb 04-23-2013 12:43 PM

Its a turtle race.. I may not be alive when one of these teams finally makes the playoffs.

Oilception 04-23-2013 12:46 PM

On the Oilers forum i wonder what people are going to vote for?
I see no way there could be any bias :sarcasm:

Oilers will. next year :naughty:

If flames are ahead of the oilers with way less talent, just add 1 high draft pick that pans out and they will be ahead of the Oilers. They know how to compete, where as Oilers dont.

As much as I hate it, its simply true they compete harder.

Mr Forever 04-23-2013 01:58 PM

The flames are probably better than the Oilers are right now and will add some solid pieces over the next couple of drafts. I don't see the Oilers making the playoffs for at least two more years.

oilers4cup 04-23-2013 02:21 PM

Who really knows , I have zero confidents in the oilers " world class management " that's all I know

Reimer 04-23-2013 02:45 PM

Was this thread created for an ego stroke?

Have we really sunk that low?

Clearly you guys are just pissed off.

I remember a period too where Cogs, Gags and Nilsson were the future of this team and then we had 3 top picks coming on top of them. Where are we at now?

gqmixmaster 04-23-2013 02:49 PM

I think both the Oilers and Flames will finish in the 11th - 9th place next year with maybe a 20% chance one of the teams gets into the 8th.

Its really all dependent on which teams management follows through on their plans better this summer.

shogun99 04-23-2013 02:51 PM

I think the Flames will be the same old team next year, sign a bunch of UFA's this summer and be in a repetitive vortex for the 8th seed. If Mac T fixes what Tambo couldn't this summer I can see us as high as fifth next year.

GreatKeith 04-23-2013 02:55 PM

Keep in mind most of the ahl call ups playing for the flames right now likely will be replaced by the tanguays and whoever else is injured over there. With kipper potentially retiring the flames have no starting goalie unless ramo is ready to make the jump

The Nuge 04-23-2013 03:19 PM

Losing Kipper is going to be a bigger deal than most seem to think. I can see them going out and handing a guy like Smith a massive contract

Dabomb 04-23-2013 03:52 PM

Reading CP this morning and it looks like the Flames are doing everything in their power to lose tonight's game. Sitting out healthy Backlund and dressing as many AHL players as possible. I sure hope they win tonight.

If the oilers do not make the playoffs next year

Hall, Eberle, Nuge, and the other kids need to be traded to get real talent in here

maroon 6 04-23-2013 03:58 PM

Oilers. Next year or the year after i'm guessing.

Perfect_Drug 04-23-2013 04:06 PM

Flames have that lunch-bucket crew mentality.

They're going to resemble the Blue Jackets I bet.

Our team still tries to stick-handle past 4 guys, toe drag defenders, and run the defensive zone like a fire drill.

Our team resembles the 1998-2004 Rangers. All the skill in the world, with zero grit, and no intensity.

Not all. I'm looking at making a large bet with one or more Flames fans and am thinking whether I should do it.

Perfect_Drug 04-23-2013 07:28 PM

We are built exactly like the 2002-2003 Atlanta Thrashers.

Kovalchuk (Yak)
Heatley (Hall)
M.Savard (RNH)
Kozlov (Eberle)

Moonlapse Vertigo 04-23-2013 08:23 PM

Probably Calgary. The Oilers have an absolutely putrid track record since 1993. The odds aren't in their favor.

And the flames don't?

OilerTyler 04-23-2013 08:28 PM

The Flames are trying to lose games and they are still better than the Oilers.

Well, they did make the playoffs five straight seasons. 03/04 to 08/09.

That's a better stretch than we've had since the 80's.
