Dallas Moving into the Top 5

How much would it cost for Dallas to snag a top 5 pick this year?

We'd most likely try to add to 10th overall using our (possible) 1st (27th-30th from Boston), or any number of 2nds we have (our own at 40th, and Vancouver's, possibly Boston's as well).

Would it be possible?

As I said in another thread: I keep on seeing threads with fans wanting to move up in the draft, and haven't really seen any (may have missed 1 or 2) that have been started where a fan wants to move out of the top 3 or top 5 or top 10 for lower picks.

Don't think there is a market for such a deal. I can see someone at 7 or 8 moving down a little, but can't see anyone in the top 3 for sure, and probably top 5, looking to move down.

Maybe the 10th + Oleksiak gets you into the top 5. Other than that, I think most teams in that position would elect to keep their pick.

Good post. There has to be a market for it. I doubt anyone want to move that far down, unless they get an absolute overpayment.

Bolded the key word there. GMs may be thinking entirely different things. If a scouting department for a team in the top 5 doesn't see a big gap between the guys there and the guys a few picks back or thinks their player will still be on the board down a few spots, I'm sure they'd gladly move back for an extra 2nd.

But how often do teams trade out of the top 5? Between lockouts the only two I can remember are the Islanders in 2008 and the Leafs with the 2nd overall in 2010, which they traded way before the draft and way before they knew they'd be picking that high.

LatvianTwist 04-28-2013 01:52 PM

Feaster might be stupid enough to trade down from 6th to 10th.

AMDZen 04-28-2013 01:53 PM

Jamie Benn to Avs for 2nd overall

Exit Dose 04-28-2013 01:54 PM

You might see some movement within the top 5, but I doubt you'll see someone trade out of it.

Bad deal for the Avs IMO.

I wouldn't do it, Mackinnon will likely be better then Benn, much better.

I'm going to assume you're joking. Benn's a proven top talent.

He a 65-70 point guy with an ok 2 way game.

He's already 24 and in 4 years will be a UFA.

I would much rather have the 18 year old who has 90+ point potential and would be under the Avs control for a minimum of 7 more years then the guy who we could potentially lose in 4 years, and doesn't have near the potential Mackinnon has.

And the whole proven thing is a terrible argument when you're talking about a top 2 pick, especially in this draft where the Top 2 guys are so strong.

Benn is more than a 65-70 point guy. Just saying. He hasn't reached his peak yet.

Never mind stuff like Oleksiak + 10th... people need to look at actual trades for an idea of the cost... HF loves to overvalue unused picks but downgrade drafted players...

For example to move from 12 to 8 cost the Sharks all of a 2nd and a 7th... in this case 10 to 5-6 I would guess that pick + BOS 1st would be sufficient

Now for teams who be open to it... what about the Flames??? yes there is the question of quality vs quantity but Calgary does not really have either right now in the prospect pool... trade down for a late 1st and Calgary would pick like this:

CGY- 10th
STL- 16th-20th
PIT- 25th-30th
BOS- 25th-30th

That is a bounty for such a deep round... can fill many holes...

He hasn't done anything to prove otherwise yet...

63(In 71 games) points last year, and a 66 point pace this season.

He doesn't have much more potential then that. Maybe a couple 70-75 point seasons in his prime. But he doesn't have the skill set to be a PPG player.

God, I really don't want this to turn into a Benn thread, but this just boggles my mind. He is a winger playing center and still puts up those numbers with pretty damn good 2 way play and power. He is still managing to put up the numbers he did this season with a fractured wrist for a majority of the last half of the season (Benn won the sniping competition, if you remember, the kid has unreal aim) AND with Loui having a pretty bad season (a very pretty bad season for Loui)

Funny you say he hasn't proven otherwise yet. Mackinnon has proven NOTHING in the NHL.

I'm not saying Benn will be better than Mackinnon because I think Mackinnon will be better, but use arguments that don't contradict yourself please.

Eriksson straight up. Put him on a wing with Stamkos, and you have yourself a 90 point scorer. Will replace St Louis after he retires, too.
