Who Should Win the Selke Trophy?

Nominees based on my own list + the recommendations of others in the main section.

Vote based on who you think SHOULD win the Selke, not who you think is going to win.

McClement taking Toronto's PK from 29th to 3rd (although he's helped by a healthy Reimer) should lend an interesting dynamic.

But it's hard to argue with Bergeron.

WHATaboutLOVE 04-29-2013 10:22 AM

Toews

Four Boilermakers 04-29-2013 10:43 AM

Toews should win it this year.

Chris Hansen 04-29-2013 10:49 AM

I have no idea how you one could honestly say Bergeron or Toews have had a more "Selke-worthy" season than the other. It'll be really interesting to see how the voting (for the real Selke, I mean) plays out.

I don't know the ratio of writers from east to west , but every writer from the eastern conference is going to pick Bergeron besides maybe a couple of NY guys picking Callahan, but even then hel get all 2nds. For that reason I believe he wins while Toews datsyuk and backes will split the west vote

Well Bergeron was deployed in a much more defensive role than Toews and I think that's a very valid argument as to why he's had a more worth season.

It's easy. Toews had a more Selke worthy season.

Way more points, better +/-, more takeaways, less giveaways

Feel like Hossa gets overlooked every year. Also would be nuts if Saad actually got any votes, but he was very good.

Think Toews or Bergeron will will actually win though.

5 votes for Pascal Dupuis.

Jonteeh 04-29-2013 12:15 PM

Anze Kopitar

How much does the coaching change have to do with the improved PK? Note: Not hating on McClement.

Hossa is amazing. The Selke has clearly become a trophy for centers these days.

I'd be interested to see if there was any improvement mid season last year after Carlyle took over.

Sevanston 04-29-2013 12:19 PM

Including the fancy stats, I'd give it to Bergeron by a small but clear margin.

But I wouldn't be surprised at all if Toews was the one who went home with it.

It's really sad that you are citing "more points" as a criteria for the Selke, but you're right, in reality, it does affect things.

Hossa just isn't as good as Toews defensively, not to mention that he played fewer games.

Well if we were following the criteria of the Selke to the letter, a third liner would win it every year. It's essentially the best two way forward award.

Alicat 04-29-2013 12:25 PM

Patrice Bergeron-Cleary should win

What's a better defensive play - scoring a goal or losing possession and then getting it back?

It's pretty modern of Patrice to hyphenate his name with his husband's name after getting married.

Well I watch 99% of Habs, Sens, Leafs games (wife/kids interfere ;) ) and McClement is absolutely nuts on their PK. He wins a ton of faceoffs, always positions himself to block lanes, ices the puck constantly, strips pucks. He's just...crazy. I gave him my vote here for that work.

Now, is he the best at all defensive aspects? Maybe not, but does seem to be highly skilled on the PK and defensive assignments.

Le Magnifique 66 04-29-2013 12:41 PM

Pascal Dupuis, what a year he had

Holocene 04-29-2013 02:11 PM

Homer voted for Stepan since he's not going to win but he was a monster two-way player this year. No one on the team really came close to his +/-, he put up great numbers and a lot of PK time, 23rd in takeaways, leads the team in shorthanded points.

I fully expect Toews to win it this year though.

WarriorofTime 04-29-2013 02:13 PM

Go away Eastern Conference forwards. You get all the scoring awards, toss the WC a bone on this one.
