3rd and 4th lines will still get eaten up because they suck.

You can't build a third and fourth line via free agency, because good bottomplayers get over paid on the market. These are players you have to develop, so it's going to take a couple of years to develop a true bottom six.

longy85 05-03-2013 12:42 PM

I don't think Harti is an NHLer at this time. He did not show anything this year that makes me think he can contribute to a hopefully-improved oiler line up next year. If the oil need to choose between Lander and Harti, why not play Lander at 4th line LW and sign a new 4th line centre (not sure who is available)? Lander has shown he can be somewhat versatile.

However, I would prefer the bottom six to look like this (even if it is hard to accomplish):
PRV-Horc-FA
FA-FA-FA
extras: brown, probably smyth

Note that I don't want smyth back, but it sounds like he will be back.

Keep Lander and harti down in OKC, or even use Harti in a package for someone legit in the top 6 or on the D-corps. I just don't see NHL player in Harti; he has the tools but lacks the sense.

I don't know what to do with the top 6. Hall and Yak looked good together, and for some reason Nuge and Ebs are linked. Don't want to trade Gagner unless we have an NHL proven replacement for him.

I think your first line is a little soft, and your top pairing will leave your goalie facing multiple 3-0 every game.

I agree to some extent, but I think it is certainly possible to making savvy UFA acquisitions who become solid bottom 6 players in your system. While that sounds similar, I don't think it is necessary to develop them from scratch (i.e. the draft), but it is necessary to recognize talent and potential that hasn't quite been realized.

A few examples would be Campbell and Paille in BOS, Stallberg in CHI, Chimera in WSH, Sobotka and Nichols in STL, Winnik in ANA, Stoll in LA, etc.

Definitely. I agree you can't have a bottom six of home developed players on their ELC, but you also can't afford to sign four UFA bottom 6 players in one offseason. If you do, it'll end up being Belanger, Eager and Hordichuck. I would rather go all in on a Clowe than sign three lesser guys TBH.

The lineup is basically what we ended up drafting in the bottom 10 with...again. It doesn't address any of the issues that were identified by MacT and just about everyone else.

You can address the bottom 6 with UFA's and savvy trades for draft picks/prospects. It's actually the easiest part of building a team, provided the GM and staff are any good at all.

1st line works..

The 2nd sucks. Too small and weak and MPS is not a 2nd line player yet.
Clowe is too expensive for the 3rd line.
Ditto for Horcoff. Horcoff needs to be bought out.
Neither Harti or Lander are ready for full time roles on a winning team.
Adding Monahan will do nothing for the Oil if they want to make the playoffs next season, which is the goal they say.
Petrell..meh..doesn't matter.

I like your thinking.

What if we turfed Horcoff, and entered Kyle Wellwood. 1/4 the salary and better numbers in every statistical category. When you factor in injuries and such, that would give the Oilers wiggle room as well come the trade deadline. It would probably take Eberle,Gagner,N.Schultz and the first in 2014 to get you Shea Weber. A deal like that would certainly help both clubs.

Beerfish 05-03-2013 02:17 PM

Can't be 'my way' with the players you have retained.

About as realistic as most of these proposed line-ups.

Don't think Wellwood is the type of player we need. Butter soft comes to mind.
