ECQF: 5th Toronto (0) vs 4th Boston (1). The "I Will Survive" Edition

Previously in Leafs Nation:

The Leafs Made the Playoffs for the first time in 9 years. We all squealed and jumped for joy... in fact you could say, or rather James Brown could squeal that:

And then we drew the Big Bad Boston Bruins, and then some of us were, all like well, that just sucked. (oh, and Kessel didn't talk to the media on Monday, to tell us once again how he feels about playing against Boston. And The Trade. Because you realise there are Leaf Fans in Timbuktu who haven't heard about the Kessel for Seguin and some other players who were at the time numberless picks yet. Shocker :amazed:!!. I know).

And then Wednesday, May 1st came along. And Boston showed up to play some hockey.

Toronto did too. for you know. ten minutes. And then, JVR had a beauty shot off the crossbar, and then it went the other way, and then. well. Wade Freaking Redden took a shot, and Nathan Horton deflected it in.

And then we went off to play go--

Wait.
You mean. there's more hockey to be played?! Colour me shocked! If we were to listen to most of the media. (and a major portion of people on these lovely, lovely boards), we were eliminated Wednesday. but nosiree, we were not!

Hold on to your hats, boys and gals, that's right. It's game two time!

Gloria Gaynor wrote a song, just for our boys in Blue
:

Leaf Notes at a glance:

* Mike "Costco/Cost-ya" Kostka (aka: Thor to some) have a broken finger. Leaf Nation sends him a basket of flowers, and a lot of get well laters.

* Cory Franson has a bruised foot. We don't know his status.

* Kessel has a boo-boo on his wrist. But, the guy beat cancer, plays with one nut, and hasn't missed a regular season game in three years. Dude's gonna play, and beat Mr. Giant Wingspan.

* In the midst of all the DOOM! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! I'm not sure if this was ever really presented to the Leaf Nation, but the Leafs have less than 250 games combined of Playoff Experience. (Bruins? over 1000. So all that Shock 'n' Awful: kind of to be expected).

* Andrew "the flying elbow Ference will not be playing, as Shanahan and company gave him 1 game. (Yes, we're in playoffs now!)

And now we interrupt this GDT for some statistical analysis. We will bypass Misters Corsi and Fenwick to just give you the briefest highlights of Game One

And now, time for Lineups!

(Randy is keeping secrets! aka. I have no idea, let me know).

But I forsee Hamilton/Colburne/Frattin coming in for Orr/McLaren and ???

vs.

Stupid Julien is secret too! (again, I have no clue).

Dougie Hamilton will most likely play due to the Ference suspension

Keys to WIN this game:

* 60 minutes of competitive play.
* good speed from defensive zone to the Offensive zone.
* shooting the puck helps wonders :)
* no flip passes
* no freaking out
* "Silent" Jay McClemment and his merry band of PK men.

these two big mouths

Mr "Clutch" goal... most of his awesome missing since Sandwich hit in Philly.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a65...57-430x298.jpg
Needs to activate his super saiyan powers

having a HUGE game, and take some pressure off Kessel so he can do his awesome. (if Kessel could channel his sister's championship winning powers that would be great).

Kadri quote "This is a Winnable Series." and I think it is. If the guys can play the way we know they can, and not the team we've seen all April.

Oi, Boston! We're Here! And we've Burned the Boats

See?

A P.S. to Leafs Nation.

Honestly - I KNOW they've not been playing well. I know Game 1 either shocked (or didn't shock) a lot of you. But this isn't basketball. It's not football. It's Hockey. anything can happen. We need to channel this:

and also this:

because, at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself this one, simple question:

I do. :)

Calling a series win then? I'm good with that. :)

KesselLooksLikeRadar* 05-03-2013 09:08 PM

Can we find a way to win? Cheat, or something? Please?

CanadasTeam 05-03-2013 09:09 PM

I will survive  Thanks for the write up I actually enjoyed it.

GO LEAFS!!!!

Crispy Crust 05-03-2013 09:12 PM

Please just win.

Cor 05-03-2013 09:14 PM

Just make the rest of the series competitive, and at least win 2 games and I will be happy.

Yea, I believe in this team! Let's get it done. Starts with a big win in game 2! I just don't want this season to end in 6 games or less. I want to keep going!

Daisy Joy 05-03-2013 09:15 PM

I also call the Post Game thread - because Ive got it all in my head already! :)

thanks you guys - it's my first GDT. I don't have a graphics program (nor the time to play with it), but this is what I'm good at. finding stuff to fit the situation, and writing about it (might as well apply my degrees to SOMETHING useful right? Next year, I am going to sign up for some) :) since you guys like this

The Reaper 05-03-2013 09:18 PM

Please Leafs win the game

LeafOfBread 05-03-2013 09:19 PM

I have a good feeling about this one. I highly doubt they play the way they did last game, and all season they've been a pretty resilient group. I think they can do it.

BTP 05-03-2013 09:20 PM

good read in the OP :D. GLG

KuleminFan41 05-03-2013 09:21 PM

Looking at those stats , it looks like the game should have been closer than 4-1 .

We got more blocks, hits, face off wins, better % on PK and PP lol

Cor 05-03-2013 09:23 PM

I think Lupul-Grabo-Kessel would be effective against the B's.

Grabo likes to start the rush, and bring it all the way deep into the zone. He attracts the defense. He often makes teams forget about the other players (which is why Kule, Mac, and Grabo were so effective). Now I get he hasn't done that a whole lot this year too but hang in there.

If Lupul, goes to the net, you have one of Seidenberg or Chara covered. The other, with Grabo, and if it works well enough, the center focus's on the puck (Grabo) as well.

This leaves Kessel to hang around the top of the circles opposite of the side Grabo is on. Grabo;

a) Has a direct lane to get the puck to a decently wide open Kessel. OR

b) gives the puck back to the D who can get Kessel the puck, or put the puck on net, and have Kessel and Grabo use their speed to get to the net and a scoring chance ensues.

Now, I know this won't happen. This isn't pre-season. Have we tried Kessel and Grabo together? Yes, but that was 2 or 3 years ago.

Part of me thinks it would be effective.

As for the other lines?

JVR - Kadri - Frattin
MacArthur - Bozak - Kulemin
Komarov - McClement - Orr

Heck, i'd even move McClement up, put Colborne in on that 4th line and let Bozak get back to 100%.

Crispy Crust 05-03-2013 09:23 PM

Get a win for the birthday boy JVR.

HellasLEAF 05-03-2013 09:35 PM

we came for a split. everything still on track as far as I can see.

if we were to lose one of these two games it would be the first one.

BayStBullies 05-03-2013 09:40 PM

This is a crucial game; it would take an absolute Bruins collapse to come back from being down 0-2.

The way I see it; the Leafs need to split these two games (too late for game 1). They then need to win their first home game. That leaves them with needing to win 2 of the last 4 games; with 2 home games remaining.

If they can't win the next 2 games; I don't like the chances.

Grant 05-03-2013 09:47 PM

Great GDT, love the write up/story! Go leafs go!!!!!

KuleminFan41 05-03-2013 09:49 PM

Here's a much better head-to-head comparison (current and all time) than the one you have in the OP :D
