Carl Gunnarsson

Don't see much about him, but I've always been a supporter and think he's played great in the playoffs so far. In the second game especially I'd say he saved at least two goals (one with a beauty dive to break up the pass) and his physicality was outstanding.

Hoping he doesn't get traded and is signed for about 2.5M to 3M per.

Jerkini 05-05-2013 11:12 AM

He was probably one of our better defenceman last night IMO.

Daisy Jane 05-05-2013 11:12 AM

he's playing really well with a bum hip. usually you can tell when that hip is bothering him because that's when he makes the dumb plays.

He started off the season really slowly, but I'm glad to see he's in form in the playoffs

JMcLeaf 05-05-2013 11:14 AM

His play didn't seem as solid this season as it has in the past but he was great last night!

Lebanese Leaf 05-05-2013 11:18 AM

Been saying this for a long time, he is to us what Hjalmersson is to Chicago.

Hard to say whether Nonis is content with Gunnar-Phaneuf next season, or if he'll go out and get somebody.

Gunnar's great, but yeah, I would like to get another #2 to make Gunnar our #3/4 partnered with gardiner or something.

Mystifo 05-05-2013 11:21 AM

One thing that sticks out in my mind is that play he made to stop a 2 on 1 last night. He just sprawled out his body to block the passing lane and stopped a prime chance for Boston. I keep hearing how we need a true first pairing D but I think we really just need a second guy like Gunnar who more or less a top 4 DFD.

Wouldn't mind at all,

Phaneuf - XXXX
Gardiner - Gunnar
Franson - Fraser/O'Byrne

He had an up and down season which we can probably link to his injury issues which is probably the worst kept secret in Toronto sports right now.

Having said that, I thought he was pretty awesome last night. Huge, huge breakup on that 2 on 1.

Hurt 05-05-2013 11:25 AM

Gunnarsson looked great last night. Very happy with all the little things he did as well as the aggressiveness.

stakesishigh 05-05-2013 11:28 AM

Gunnarsson was by far the best defencemen last night for me. He played a pretty flawless game and made some exceptional plays on their forwards that neutralized chances.

I think that was the best game I've seen from him this season. Hopefully he can ride that confidence into the next game.

leafstilldeath* 05-05-2013 11:29 AM

Gunner is quietly putting up another good season. Hope there is not over discussion on him in the media and the media wolves stay away from him and rest of the buds.

p.l.f. 05-05-2013 11:33 AM

He's the only guy we have who can play 25 min with Phaneuf
Size, skating ability and hands.
Gardiner has the potential.

Donmega 05-05-2013 11:41 AM

He really is stepping up, love it.

LeafOfBread 05-05-2013 11:52 AM

I enjoyed watching him body that little softy Seguin. He's been great for us so far

Diatomic 05-05-2013 11:54 AM

underrated forsure, hope he gets a hefty raise.

Ari91 05-05-2013 11:56 AM

Led dmen in hits last night. Physicality isn't Gunnar's game so I was surprised by that stat but I love it. He's such an underrated guy that doesn't get much credit when in the line up but his absence is definitely felt when he isn't. Guy has brought some stability to the back end all the while playing on an injured hip.

Dark Knight 05-05-2013 11:57 AM

Carl Gunnarson is Mr. Dependable and he isn't even a 100%. Hasn't been for the entire season.

He should be a staple moving forward.

Wendelstache 05-05-2013 12:12 PM

He's throwing his body around more then he ever did in the regular season, looks like he got the memo about playoff hockey.

Even with a bum hip the guy is still playing well, hope he can keep it up.

SnipeCheeseAllDay 05-05-2013 12:47 PM

Next year:

Rielly - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Gunnarsson
Fraser - Franson
-Ranger/O'Byrne/Blacker

TootooTrain 05-05-2013 01:04 PM

Gotta give props to a player who has a game like that when he has a bum hip. He's going to take some punishment physically this post-season.

AvroArrow 05-05-2013 01:47 PM

He's improved a lot, really impressed with him. As for the 2.5mil extension, i wouldnt mind keeping him for 3.5-3.8

Darcy Tucker 05-05-2013 01:51 PM

if Gunnarsson can keep playing with the physicality he did last night then we have a real beaut of a defender. I love watching him win puck battles.
