James Reimer AKA Optimus Reim

James Reimer is our first draft and developed NHL start since Felix...he's been great and some of you might not even know this but:

HE JUST WON HIS FIRST PLAYOFF GAME IN BOSTON.

Everyone is talking about Kessel and Carlyle.

Don't be so fickle. All I saw after Game 1 was how the Leafs needed to go after Luongo or that Reimer's glove hand is terrible (Yeah, I bet Quick never gives up any glove side goals).

ALL goalies have problems with the glove...it's the one place where everyone wants to aim.

Reimer has faced tougher shots than Rask, almost 30 more shots than Rask and he's still managed to give up only ONE more goal.

The Leafs have a great goalie in Reimer that will only get better. One of his strongest attributes is his mental fortitude and his ability to bounce back after bad goals, bad periods, bad games.

kesleaf 05-06-2013 08:34 AM

Absolutely. He is going to be a beast going forward, now that he's had a couple playoffs games and a win under his belt. And enough with the glove hand. Grapes settled the issue last game. EVERYONE aims upstairs with butterfly goalies. Most goals scored in the playoffs were aimed upstairs - look that up. That's where you have the most space to land the puck.

I'm just so happy for him though. He was put through a lot in this tough market but I'm glad he stuck through it and is now making a name for himself. People wanted him gone not too long ago lol.

Hurt 05-06-2013 08:37 AM

Don Cherry is right. With all the butterfly goalies, EVERY shooter goes glove side because that's the only place to shoot.

bobbyflex 05-06-2013 09:07 AM

he made a monstrous save on Campbell off that Gardiner giveaway. If that goes in Leafs probably collapse and lose game 2

Aplayaz2000 05-06-2013 09:12 AM

Reimer is the best

and he plays for the LEAFS

The Viper 05-06-2013 09:13 AM

Reims is the best and he is a beast!!!!!!

Well actually going high on a butterfly goalie that covers the bottom of the net well with his pads is the goal.

Many goalies are right handed (catching with left hands), and majority of shooters are left handed which then gives them the best shooting angles to go high glove (far side), unless they're playing their off wing. So its a pattern that happens on many goalies, based on that factor.

Johnny Bower, a man who knows a thing or twelve about playoff goaltending, had some positive things to say about Reimer after that first game:

"Arash Madani ‏@ArashMadani 38m
Asked Reimer how insane he expects tonight to be. "Not sure," he grinned. "As I've been told, I don't have much playoff experience." #Leafs"

James feeling it totally

Its nice to see a home grown drafted and developed player succeed in Toronto..

These are few and far between in the recent past.

Hopefully the trend continues on now.

Hopefully we can continue to add impact pieces from the farm, definitely. It's hard to hate Reimer.

Go Reimer go go

Garbs 05-06-2013 11:40 AM

I won't know whether to laugh or cry next year when he's sitting at home, while Carey Price/Marc Andre Fleury are blowing it for Canada.

I'll be fuming. He better get an invite to camp, so when they have sub-par years yet again, and hes piling up wins around Christmas, he can make the team.

True. I meant on straight shot on goal. Of course in today's NHL, shot blocking and traffic results in lots of funny bounces and a goalie's angles and reflexes play a huge part.

Leaf Rocket 05-06-2013 11:56 AM

Well I'm glad he's playing great for us, he was a bit shaky on the rebound control but he got it done. I loved it!

I know, I'm agreeing with you lol. Its crazy to complain because every goalie has a "weak glove". He steals games and people still complain

Damien Cox actually had an article about that you can read here:

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/..._wins_cox.html

This part is so true:

Quote:

In Reimer’s case, well, his glove hand is too low, he leans out too far over his feet, he’s too inexperienced, his rebound control is poor, he’s not Joseph, he’s not Roberto Luongo.

...

Drilled 4-1 in Game 1, some lamented the “bad” goals despite some acrobatic saves and incessant Boston pressure, while others began to wonder aloud (again) if Leaf GM Dave Nonis will have to consider Luongo and his massive contract this summer or some other option.
And when Reimer won Game 2 on Saturday night with a scintillating 39-save performance?
Barely mentioned. The fact it was his first NHL playoff victory? Noted somewhere in the fine print.

Grant 05-06-2013 12:13 PM

4th in sv% amongst eastern conference goalies. You know, only ahead of former 1st overall MAF, teams Canada's goalie Price, top 10 goalie Rask and playoff experience Nabokov.

For all the abuse Cherry takes, he's one of, if not the only [hockey related] media member that speaks the truth stop to stop. The rest, or the vast majority, are laughable, sensationalistic buffoons, too concerned with twitter and the like to rely on something so mundane as reality, because, sadly, reality doesn't sell.

Smif 05-06-2013 12:15 PM

I know when I play and I have no time to think or aim or even look up to take a shot my instinct is to put it high glove. Everyone knows the perfect shot is bar down glove side, that's what everyone practices and have been taught to do since they were five years old. They're not thinking "oh it's Reimer, gotta go high glove" - it's just instincts.
