Semi-Historic Question
Guys, it's been a few years so I don't remember the situation clearly with the Blues and their ownership situation, but back in 2005, coming out of the lockout, how is it that Blues management decided that Chris Pronger would be the big ticket traded when Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk were still on the roster? Given the career that Pronger had with 3 cup finals appearances since then with Edmonton, Anaheim and Philadelphia, it seems insane in hindsight that even if a team was headed to the cap floor would throw out a Pronger over the other salary cutting options available. Anyone able to comment on this?

It is a little easier in hindsight to criticize that trade, but the decision to move Pronger might have something to do with what was being given in return. I'm not sure of what kind of forwards were being shopped around at that time, but receiving Jeff Woywitka and Eric Brewer AND dropping a ton of salary must have been the safer bet.

IIRC, there were also concerns in the locker room, and more than a few players weren't huge on Pronger. Clearing him out of the way also helped pave the way for Jackman to play bigger minutes.

Pronger wanted a new long term contract, and the Blues weren't in a position to be giving that kind of contract out at that point in time. There wasn't really much more to it.

Yeah there was. Tkachuk was making 10MM to be utterly worthless in the playoffs but had a NTC, as did Weight, who would later that season waive his under duress but get traded to the eventual Cup champs (overcoming Team Pronger in 7).

It was the Weight/Tkachuk contract situations that made Pronger the guy who had to go. There is no way on God's green earth that if Pleau could've dumped Tkachuk's completely worthless ass for the same bag of pucks Pronger fetched they would have not kept Pronger and given him 5 x 6.25M.

Pronger was traded by Laurie to make the franchise more attractive to a buyer. The Blues received absolute garbage for him. Brewer, Whywhichway, and Doug Lynch. The Blues are the only team to trade Pronger and not receive a 1st Round Draft Pick for him other than Hartford which received Mrs. Janney (Shanahan).
