Rolston named head coach of Sabres:
Quote:

BUFFALO, N.Y. (May 7, 2013) --- Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that Ron Rolston has been named the head coach of the Sabres, after serving as the club’s interim head coach since Feb. 20.

**Regier and Rolston will be available to the media today, May 7, at 11 a.m. in the press conference room at First Niagara Center.**

Rolston, who is the 16th head coach in franchise history, guided the Sabres to a 15-11-5 record in the 31 games he served as interim head coach during the 2012-13 season. Prior to joining the Sabres in February, he was the head coach of the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL). In his two seasons (2011-12, 2012-13), as coach of the Americans, Rolston compiled a 63-44-17 regular-season record.

Before joining the Americans as head coach in 2011, Rolston spent seven seasons as head coach with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, where he became the first coach in U.S. history to lead the United States Under-18 team to three gold medals (2005, 2009, 2011) at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Under-18 Championship, adding a silver medal (2007) in his other appearance as head coach.

In addition to coaching at the Under-18 and Under-17 levels, Rolston also served as head coach for the U.S. National Junior Team at the IIHF U20 World Championship in 2007 and 2009. In 2007, he led Team USA to the bronze medal.

Rolston joined USA Hockey after serving as an assistant coach at four different NCAA Division I hockey programs (Lake Superior State University, 1990-1995; Clarkson University, 1996-1999; Harvard University, 1999-2002; Boston College, 2002-2004) between 1990 and 2004, winning National Championships in 1992 and 1994 with Lake Superior State University.

This is the least shocking headline.

Anyone want to bet the amount of columns written by TBN if Pegula isn't present at this press conference today?

Zip15 05-07-2013 07:14 AM

Uninspired but unsurprising choice.

Jame 05-07-2013 07:14 AM

This is so stupid

tsujimoto74 05-07-2013 07:14 AM

I'm a bit disappointed. I don't mind Ron terribly -- he's got a good track record with young players, and we're a young team -- but the fact that they announced it before a lot of coaches were even available for interviews makes it seem like their pool wasn't very deep/they weren't seriously considering other options.

And if he shows up to this one, first 5 questions we're going to get "Why are you present at this press conference and not the others"

I will support him until he gives me a reason not to. Not exactly excited about this whole Regier + Rolston combo, but this better be Regier's last coach.

ugh come on

+1.. the guy to me seems like a watered down Lindy..might as well just kept Lindy.. Stands behind the bench with that blank unemotional expression on his face.. bad move imo

kirby11 05-07-2013 07:24 AM

that was fast...did they even look outside the organization? :shakehead

Takeo 05-07-2013 07:26 AM

If they're keeping Regier, they might as well keep Rolston. Hiring a good coach would be a waste at this point. Organization is a mess, but at least they're in their comfort zone.

They are completely different.

Rolston's an uninspired choice no doubt .. and really, no external search?

Per the press release, only Regier and Rolston will be in attendance at this morning's presser. Those hacks better harp on no external search, Rolston's style/system, any potential staff changes (especially because our special teams were terrible), personnel usage .. plus maybe some draft/acquisition questions for Regier .. Pegula should be a non-issue today, as Regier made this decision, sigh.

SabresAreScaryGood 05-07-2013 07:32 AM

The hardest part about today will be listening to this press conference on radio. Darcy Regier and Ron Rolston sound like the same person.

WhoIsJimBob 05-07-2013 07:32 AM

If they are going the "suffer" route, I like the pick.

Rolston is a good teaching coach and the young kids did play pretty well under Rolston after the coaching change.

I couldn't care less if the guy is a screamer on the bench. There are plenty of screamers that get tuned out so fast by today's players, that I don't want that kind of coach.

Now I would like to see a better assistant to X & O the PP....

DixonWard15 05-07-2013 07:34 AM

I like the hire, it formally gets the organization some fresh blood and remember, RR's record was better than Lindy's and it would have qualified for the playoffs.

Karate Johnson 05-07-2013 07:35 AM

Hockey Heaven is shaping up nicely. What a joke

TakeThatTootoo 05-07-2013 07:38 AM

Ok, now lets get some good assistants who know what a PP is.

And yet so predictable.

One sliver of silver lining -- Rolston does have a history of working with younger players. He gets the gig for the transition (read: bad) years and then they move him out for someone else more experienced in getting teams farther.

Never fails to make me laugh, so true.

Disappointed by the lack of real search.

I don't completely hate it, but part of it's gonig to be who ends up as assistants. If they keep Patrick, Adams, etc, then I will be extremely pissed off.

joshjull 05-07-2013 07:45 AM

"there will be suffering"

TakeThatTootoo 05-07-2013 07:46 AM

Bahahahahah. Sabres.com front headline. I find Adams' smirk hilarious. As if, "Really? This guy?"

It's Regier. Path of least resistence. That this isn't a surprise is what happens after years of the same sort of thing. Just like the full departmental review a few years back that took what, less than a week? Lame.

As for the press, can the guys who read here please pay attention to Woodhouse's list above? Key in on asking Ron how much room he has to hire his own assistants and what can be done to get capable people in those positions. Does Ron have input into personnel like the claims that Ruff did?

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LEAVE THE PEGULA CRAP OUT OF IT. Call his press handler and get it done there, we don't need to be present to another 40-minute unprofessional snit. There is gold to be mined here for people who actually want information about the on-ice product.
