PK Subban a finalist for the Norris

Quote:

The field for the James Norris Memorial Trophy received a makeover this season.

Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins, P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadians and Ryan Suter of the Minnesota Wild are this year's finalists for the trophy awarded to the defenseman that shows the "greatest all-round ability" at the position, as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

As expected.

p.s. not to nitpick too much, but he's a finalist.

Technically all d-men in the league were nominations this year.

Nice! Letang will likely take it, but it's awesome to see him there as a finalist.

Fixed. ;)

Letang is probably going to win it but I feel like if Letang had the season Subban had and vice versa, Letang would still win it. Everybody hates Subban :(

Habs 4 Life 05-07-2013 09:14 AM

Congrats to PK, hope he takes it but I also would go in favor of Letang right now. But it's dam close

WhatJustHappened 05-07-2013 09:19 AM

Who ever finishes further in the playoffs will win it.

No award but the Conn Smythe takes playoff performance into consideration though.

Mathradio 05-07-2013 09:27 AM

Why can't we have Norris, Selke, Calder trophies for the best D-man, defensive forward and rookie in the playoffs?

hototogisu 05-07-2013 09:28 AM

He won't win, but I'm very happy to see him get nominated. Should shut the haters up for a while, at least.

ClasslessGuy 05-07-2013 09:31 AM

No Phaneuf ! :P

I think Subban should win, he's been more complete than the other wo, and played a more important rol. But, he won't win as his reputation and the sheer dislike around the league for him are too great to overcome it to win. The writer's have built in excuses (TOOI vs Suter, PPG vs Letang, etc, etc).

But good on Subban for proving the hater's wrong.

Montreal Impact FC 05-07-2013 09:34 AM

One thing that Letang as over Subban is composure... Letang make for defensive mistakes with compusure.. so it gives the illusion he is close to subban defensively... but he isnt. :)

I think it's gonna be pretty even between the 3. Each of them have pros and cons.

Subban :
+ : Amazing offensively with an average team, good on the PP, probably the MVP among the 3.
- : Not enough average ice time. Not used much on the PK.

Letang :
+ : On pace for the most point, is +16
- : Not that good on the power play. Is helped by a crazy offensive machine in front of him.

Suter :
+ : Probably the best overall defenseman among the 3, plays 27 minutes per game.
- : His offensive numbers are not so impressive, he's only +2.

No surprise. Subban has been playing extremely well ever since he signed this year. I thought he had the potential to be a norris candidate last year. But obviously, it was much harder for him to prove it on the ****** team we had.

Good job PK!

No it won't. It was obvious from February that he'd be a finalist if he kept up his play and people still give him ****. Whatever. Love him, glad he's on our team.

MarkovsKnee 05-07-2013 09:41 AM

Congratulations to Subban! I don't think anyone is surprised about the 3 picks for Norris. They were clearly the 3 stand-out defensemen this year.

My money is on Suter. He was a beast for Minny down the stretch and was regularly playing 30-32 minutes as they tried to make the playoffs. Letang's offensive numbers aren't all that impressive considering the team he plays on. Plus, he's the softest d-wise of the 3. Subban's overall lack of minutes hurts him.

Madevilz 05-07-2013 09:45 AM

Erik Karlsson will still win it.

Son Oncle Jerry 05-07-2013 09:46 AM

Good job Subban. Man do I hope he wins it just to **** the hell out of the Bruins/Sens/Leafs/Pens/NHL fans.

The votes were cast before the playoffs even began.

So, that's pretty much false.

Mathradio 05-07-2013 09:47 AM

Are the Norris voters more biased towards early-season or late-season play? If they are more biased towards late-season play then Subban stands a fighting chance, where he has eaten many minutes as a #1.

Born in 1909 05-07-2013 09:50 AM

Does that mean that it will now be unacceptable to cross-check a Norris candidate in the ear without receiving a penalty?

Watsatheo 05-07-2013 09:51 AM

Not many D become finalists for the Norris, doubt anyone would have guessed he'd become one this soon.

I wonder if he'll make the 1st-Team All Star lineup.

Which is a travesty.

So the winner is already decided?
