Dion Phaneuf

I'm surprised I haven't seen this yet (unless I'm blind), there are many varying opinions on him within Leafs nation.

I believe he's been given a role far too large for his capabilities as a #2 dman. He's best suited playing teams Top Lines WITH another strong partner, he's the trigger man on the PP and should imo play 2nd PK time.

Given a lesser role I believe he can thrive and be a consistent 50 point dman.

Now you'll be asking why would I want to get rid of a player like this then? For one, trading him is much easier then stripping him of captaincy, another reason would be because I feel we have many offensive dman in our prospect pool, two of which have Top pairing potential (Gardiner not so much a prospect) and both are LH.

He has one more year through 2013-2014 at 5.5mil with a 6.5mil caphit.

28 years old, 6'3 214lbs

Toronto is most likely interested in a similar aged #1/#2 center or a younger center with potential. Another option could be a Top Pairing RHD or a younger Top 4 RHD.

So HF what are your offers?

blankall 05-15-2013 01:59 PM

From the Flames:

Matt Stajan (similar aged #2 centre)
Anton Babchuk (PP specialist and potential 2nd pairing d-man)

Vankiller Whale 05-15-2013 01:59 PM

Kevin Bieksa + Roy's UFA rights.

TampaBolt 05-15-2013 02:16 PM

He is too valuable for the Leafs. I am serious.

Kbs 05-15-2013 02:26 PM

Whether you like him or not, we can't trade him. Our defense is thin as it is and trading him with no replacement would destroy our D.

And you are correct.

No Phaneuf, no playoffs.

Aela* 05-15-2013 02:41 PM

I wouldn't do Stajan + Babchuk since they don't really bring anything new to Toronto imo. But I'd look awful hard at that Bieksa deal. Bieksa generally won't cough up the puck like Phaneuf does, has the potential to be as good offensively as Phaneuf, and has no problem logging high amounts of minutes. He also isn't to shabby on the PP.

Roy would give us a possible #1C to go along with Kessel and allow Bozak to move onto the second line where he belongs. Would also allow us to trade Grabo with no real loss in our center corps.

Granted I don't know a whole lot about Bieksa and Roy having not watched them play a whole lot.

We have no one who can play his minutes. We'd be doomed without him. Big no to trading him.

Yep. Doesn't matter if you don't think he's a "legitimate #1 Defenceman", he's still by far our best and most versatile defenceman.

The people who want to trade him are complaining about using a 1B/#2 D (Phaneuf) as a #1 D... so their solution is to trade him away and use a #3-4 D (Gunnarson?) as our #1 Defenceman? Yea... sounds like a GREAT plan.. :shakehead

The guy needs help back there. We need to add a legitimate #2-3 defenceman, not subtract Phaneuf.

To be fair, he can't even play his minutes... I'd do the Smid+7th overall though.

Keep Gagner away from the Leafs. He's redundant.

No, Edmonton does NOT offer that. Phaneuf has one year left ffs.

Very fair in terms of value and if the Leafs were rebuilding they would take it. But the Leafs will be adding pieces to contend. They badly need a top two centre to replace Bozak if they cant re-sign him and a top pairing D man.

That was a joke. That's what's left of the pieces Calgary received for Phanuef.

As for the Bieska deal...that would be kind of interesting actually. Vancouver may decline due to cap reasons, but a good shake up for both teams.

Without a doubt I agree with everything you said.

Stastny for Phaneuf makes some sense, both have a year left, similar contracts and fill the biggest needs for both teams.

It does leave Toronto with a hole in defence though, so Colorado would probably have to add a D-man.

Stastny and Ryan Wilson for Phaneuf and McClemment?

Don't really want to trade Phaneuf, but I'd do this trade from the Leafs.

Nice try at sneaking McClement into the trade ;)

He's a play making center... something the Leafs might have in Kadri, but do not have anywhere else. That said, as much as I think Phanuef is overrated (to an extent), the Leafs need him right now.

JuicyJ* 05-15-2013 04:40 PM

Dions not a legitimate #1 on a contending team imo, but a 1b who will still eat 25-30 minutes a game in the playoffs. I'd love him in Boston but 1) I don't see why Toronto wants to move him 2) the pieces probably don't add up correctly in terms of need

As much as I like Phaneuf as a player, I like this deal a bit more.
