Danny Briere

Ran into Daniel Briere last night. He's pretty sure the Flyers are going to buy him out. He wants to stay.

The buyout of Danny Briere makes a ton of sense for a ton of reasons, namely:

* He's not very good anymore. We already know he's a weak defensive player, and the last two seasons have been by far his least productive offensively since he came to Philadelphia in 2007. He can score in the playoffs, but you need to get to the playoffs for that to work.

* He's expensive, not in real dollars but in a $6.5 million cap hit over the next two seasons.

* The Flyers could use the savings. The salary cap is dropping to $64.3 million next year and they already have $70.3 million committed to the roster. Gotta cut down somewhere.
So anyways, it seems more and more likely Briere gets bought out. I'd love him on the Canucks due to his playoff performance which we could certainly use. However, I have the feeling he wouldn't want to move out West. What are some likely landing spots for him? And what would his expected contract be? 2 years, 4mil per?

Discuss.

If he wanted to stay, he should have accepted a trade LAST YEAR, Most likely bought out by that team, and than came back to the flyers at a cheaper deal

Not a huge shock. During the lockout when the two sides were discussing what buyouts are for and should look like they were probably passing a photo of Briere around the table.

DesertDawg 05-23-2013 06:52 PM

I see him staying relatively close to Philadelphia and signing with the Devils...

How... how can anybody be this blind?

SchennSational1022* 05-23-2013 07:15 PM

I could see him signing with the Islanders. Just speculation, but I'm sure they'd be interested and it's not too far from Philadelphia. It's all about his sons and LI is a better place for elementary schools than a place like Newark or NYC. Just my .02 though..

coming back to buffalo

Zirakzigil 05-23-2013 08:15 PM

With a weak FA this year there will be more then a few teams interested in him.

Brayden Pattison 05-23-2013 08:33 PM

He said in an interview tonight that he intends to live in Philly regardless of where he plays, because of his sons, so most likely he'll sign with NJ, an NY team or Washington.

Djp 05-23-2013 08:35 PM

He is staying in the NE markets but not in Canada...too problematic with the kids and visitation if he goes to Canada.

They'd buy him out, but not Bryz ?

Briere gives them forward depth, a proven playoff performer and only 2 years left.

I'd buy out Briere 10 times before i buy out Bryz.

I would like that. Need top 6 help

hlaverty06 05-23-2013 09:00 PM

I'd use him as an absolute last resort if we don't sign Ryder/Horton/etc.

I may even pick Sullivan before him

KaossKing 05-23-2013 09:02 PM

id be up for pulling Briere is he was cheap. maybe a 1 yr deal and see if he can fit

Is that you Ed Snider?

Figured most fans prefer to keep DB over IB

Briere has a 6M caphit and plays a position they have alot of depth in. They are going to have to find a way to get down to 64M somehow.

In the case of Bryz, they will give him 1 more year to prove himself before they decide to buy him out or not. He also plays a position that if they cut him they will have to go out and find a new goalie. I wouldn't be surprised if Philly decides to kick the tires and see if they can get a goalie before the buyout period and then cut Bryz lose though

Bryz will get on more year to prove his worth

so in other words, they'll be buying him out next summer

I think this is a very real possibility. His cap hit is 6.5 mil but actual dollars are just 3 mil and 2 mil for each of the next 2 years respectfully. I can see him and his ex relocating back to Buffalo where his wife is from. If the Sabres decide to go into full rebuild mode I could see a trade occuring sending Miller to Philly and Briere bac to Buffalo. More would have to go but I can see them as being two of the pieces moving in a deal. If Briere doesn't waive his NMC then he'll certainly get bought out.

The real shame for him is that he was on IR at the trade deadline when the B's wanted him. He could have gone there for a few months, gotten bought out at the end of the deason, taken the cash from the buy out, and then resigned for a lower cap hit in Philly. We'd like to keep him but it's just not in th numbers to do so.

He's recently divorced, his kids are in school in the area and he's said before that he won't leave his kids (and good for him). His ex doesn't want to move all around the country to follow him anymore so in all likelyhood he either stays in the tri-state area (Philly, NJ, NYI or NYR) or they move the whole family back to Buffalo where his ex can be back around her family.

Teams can bid all they want fo Briere but I highly doubt he moves that far away from his kids.

Oh well, so much for me contributing something intelligent, succinct and not already stated in this thread.

Oh, I know, you spelled "loose" wrong.

lifeisruff 05-23-2013 10:46 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that if a team buys out a player, isn't that team forbidden from resigning him.

Stizzle 05-23-2013 10:48 PM

You guys that don't watch many Flyers games have no idea how terrible Briere is nowadays.

landfill 05-23-2013 11:36 PM
