Roman Josi Extension?

A Swiss hockey site reports that the Predators have offered Roman Josi a 4-year, $14 Million contract extension.

Great value, but would take him right up to UFA age, which scares me a little bit.

It's smart for Josi.

Great deal for us for the next four years. Don't like the UFA part, but getting a 1st pairing D for 3.5 is a awesome.

ThirdManIn 06-01-2013 01:32 PM

It's pretty much the same deal we had Suter signed to, right? Four years at $3.5m that carried him all the way to UFA status?

Please don't say that.

That's the exact same contract Ryan Suter got after his entry-level deal, and Josi will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of it, just like Suter.

The good thing Weber will be 31 at the end of Josi's contract so it would be easier to resign Josi then. Or if need be Move Weber then and Sign Josi long term. A much better situation than Suter Weber contract in the same year.

kypredsfan 06-01-2013 03:09 PM

Good deal if true. Hopefully Josi doesn't bolt at the end though.

glenngineer 06-01-2013 03:39 PM

Josi is trying to get guys to come and play here and likes Nashville. When did Suter ever say or do that? If Suter did do that, we'd still have him and Parise on this team. Josi is a different person so let's treat him as such.

PredsV82 06-01-2013 03:55 PM

Im pretty surprised that poile would offer a deal that goes right to UFA status after what happened with Suter. I would prefer paying him 4 mil per for 3 years and still having some leverage or making it 3.5 x 5 or 6 years.

As good as Josi is he's got an injury history, and a concussion history at that, IIRC. I would think he'd want as many guaranteed years as possible

Yeah. If Josi pulls a Suter that means he goes back to Switerland to play. Completely different situation.

I'm not saying I think Josi will leave. I think he wants to be here long term, barring an extraneous circumstance. I just think signing him to the exact deal as Suter is bad luck.

Maybe. He maxed out at 69 games in a North American season out of 3 years. I tried to find some history on him, but the Admirals Roundtable wasn't much help.

Why would you offer a 4 year deal? Why!?!?

Because the chances of him signing a 4 year deal are better than the chances of him signing a 3 year deal, and a 5 year deal locks you in longer. Josi has been great, but who knows what next season brings? The cap lowers. There are tighter restrictions on how a team can manage its financial resources.

No matter what, we eventually have to deal with Josi as a UFA. If that is in 4 or 6 years ... it happens.

Here's an idea ... If he wants to take it to 4 years ... sign him for 8 and be done with it for a while ... starting at 3 mil and increasing .5 over the length of said contract ... will be making 6.5 at the end of the contract ... with a cap hit of 4.75 ... kind of try to force the agents' hand

Both sides have to agree.

I like this deal a lot and will only be worried if they do not sign him to an extension during the 3rd year of this contract. 4 years of an ever improving top d-man for 3.5m a year is awesome.

Iron Duke 06-03-2013 08:22 PM

Moving away from my initial reaction, I'm going to try another angle. Despite Josi looking like the real deal, if he pulls a Blum, that low cost 4-year deal is going to look a whole lot better than a more expensive, longer-term one.

Or we could deal with him as an RFA in three years, and if he has maintained his high-level performance, we can sign him to a 6 or 8 year extension, after which we would have to deal with him as a UFA on the back end of his prime.

If that takes a little extra money to structure it so it's beneficial to the club, I would do it.

Why in the world would he agree to a three year deal? What motivation is there for him? 8 years would be wonderful, but, highly unlikely for a RFA coming off his ELC. The player does get a vote here and if he wants to go to his first year of UFA status, the other potential option is to let him chase an offer sheet. Arbitration is not an option so its either work with the player on a term he's willing to sign or let the stupidity of offersheet money come into play.
