[PIT] Evgeni Malkin to be extended (8 years - $9.5M cap hit)

Do you think Penguins will pay him more than Crosby?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with forward Evgeni Malkin on an eight-year $76 million contract extension, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal begins with the 2014-15 season and runs through the 2021-22 campaign, and has an average annual value of $9.5 million. He will earn $9.5 million for each of the eight seasons.

Jack de la Hoya 06-12-2013 08:35 AM

More in terms of actual $? No.

More in terms of a higher cap hit? They don't really have a choice. Malkin was always going to command more than $70 million or so over 8 years.

HANDZ 57 06-12-2013 08:40 AM

Shero "identified parameters", which is pretty much the same thing as any of us predicting that a top 2 player in the league could get around 10 million per. Doesn't mean that Malkin is seeking 10 million per. He could definitely get it but I still have a hard time believing that a guy like Malkin is going to say "I've got to get at least 10 million to sign".

shifting 06-12-2013 08:42 AM

Sign him then trade away Crosby.

junyab 06-12-2013 08:43 AM

I'd have to believe that the Lidstrom rule will come into play here.

gdsmack267 06-12-2013 08:47 AM

Was bound to happen due to the new restrictions on term limit. Hes worth every penny of 10 million too. Give him what he wants.

wunderpanda 06-12-2013 08:49 AM

If they do pay him, it will cause issues with Crosby

If they don't pay him, he will get traded or leave as a free agent

I predict Malkin will be a Flyer

Krishna 06-12-2013 08:49 AM

They have to.

Their cap is gonna suck

Crosby 8.7m
Malkin 10m
Letang wants like 7-8m

Agreed. I think you'll start to see a few teams do this. Islanders have not said so, but it appears as if they won't pay anyone more than JT's 5.5M. Then again, we're super cheap and no one wants to sign here anyway

If you're not better than the best, why should you get paid more?

Who said Letang is going to be a Penguin next season?

skillhockey 06-12-2013 08:51 AM

They will pay him more because Geno's contract can't use same cheats like Crosby's, he's paid more actually.

Malkin has done more the last few years.

If Crosby's number was an even $8m or $8.5m or $9m, OK, but his goofy birthday $8.7m ...

Expect Malkin to get more than that, even if it's just the slightest bit more.

I heard it on SiriusXM yesterday, didn't catch who they were talking to. He cited a source within the Penguins org that said Letang and his camp want to be paid in line with Weber\Suter\Doughty, and as a result, there's a good chance the Pens will issue a Staal-like "take it or leave it" extension, and if he doesn't take it, trade him at the draft.

misfit 06-12-2013 08:55 AM

Whether the Pens are willing to pay him more than Crosby or not, my guess is some other team will be.

Bennett Brauer 06-12-2013 08:55 AM

I don't think it's crazy that Malkin is asking for $10M a year, it's only a raise of $1.3M in terms of cap space.

However, I would wait until they officially sign him because the guy who is reporting this is Rob Rossi, the guy who reported the Penguins acquired Keith Yandle at the draft for Michalek. When it was Michalek for Ruopp, Cheverie and a 3rd.

In a cap world it is the idea way to go about things, Vancouver has seemed to initiate it as no player has been given more than the twins 6.1M I was surprised when Edler managed to get 5M as I expected Garrison/Bieksa/Hamhuis' 4.5-4.6 being the internal cap on defensemen.

Crosby will be fine with whatever Pens pay to Malkin. He was well aware when he signed his deal that Malkin's cap hit will likely be higher than his. No issues whatsoever here.

Shrimper 06-12-2013 09:00 AM

Just because he asks for $10m doesn't mean he'll get it. You go into negotiations with your high point because there will always been negotiating to bring it down. I expect he'll resign around $8.5-$9m.

7 years at $63m.

One thing that should be noted though is that Malkin was quoted as saying that he'd be willing to take a discount if it helped the team.

I disagree, they don't call him number 2 because he is the best player in the world. Crosby can turn a 4th line scrub into an offensive threat... his ppg is higher too. Crosby is more valuable.

Dallas has never had that legit marketing superstar so i could see Dallas throwing the money at him. Put him on a line with Eriksson or Benn would be awesome!

veedubn1 06-12-2013 09:14 AM

The Leafs will back up the Brinks truck for this guy if he even sniffs free agency. They have a ton of cap space to burn and can easily amnesty 1-2 contracts that would be sitting in the pressbox anyway if they need more.

Pens have to lock him up at whatever he wants.

Not to derail the thread, but Pittsburgh has the most impressive group of d prospects even after dealing Morrow, so I think they might let Letang go.

Leafs have 20 mill for 8 players. Sign Malkin for 10, that's 7 players for 10 mill.

Kadri just had a great year and that will cost the leafs. 3.5. Leaves them 6.5 for 6 players. Average 1 mill a player to leave some room for callups. Oh wait, Franson is RFA. He just had great year, too. 3 mill (if not more) for him. 3.5 for 5 players. Yeah... I don't think the Leafs will target Malkin for that price.

Listen, I like the Stars, I consider them my 2nd favorite team, but if Malkin is going to be a Dallas Star, it will be by trade, and Benn would be coming back in a huge package from Dallas.
