Possible Replacements for Briere.

In the likely event that Danny Briere is sent on his way, what players could come in his place? I read that the Canadiens wont re-sign Michael Ryder, Maybe him? Also maybe Scott Laughton. Who else?

flyersfan018 06-16-2013 03:32 PM

Laughton would be the long-term replacement. There's not too many free agent centers out there that interest me.

YuioIklo 06-16-2013 03:47 PM

We already have Giroux, Schenn and Couturier who can play top 9 center. For the 4th line, it will be easy to fill : Talbot, Hall, Holmstrom, Laughton...

Garbage Goal 06-16-2013 04:08 PM

We have more then enough scoring options without him which is the only role Briere fills. Simmonds, Hartnell, Voracek, Schenn, Giroux, Read alone is a top six right there. Then we have guys like Couturier and Laughton waiting in the wings (well, center in their case but you get my point).

TheKingPin 06-16-2013 04:19 PM

I read somewhere homer will
be looking to replace briere via FA

Damaged Goods 06-16-2013 04:19 PM

I don't think "replacing" Briere is the right way to look at. The team needs to find players that fit around the young pieces in place. So what do you add to Giroux, Schenn, Couturier, Voracek, Simmonds, and to a lesser extent Hartnell and Read.

Is anybody with me that Mason Raymond could be an enticing UFA reclamation project? Good blend of speed and skill if he's healthy.

The whipping boy of Van? No thanks.

AKA guy who could become an undervalued commodity.

laforest 06-16-2013 05:49 PM

Brad Boyes could be a cheapish option. Might be low risk high reward. :sarcasm:

Danko 06-16-2013 06:01 PM

if were talking just another forward, i'd love Matt Moulson, Bobby Ryan, Dustin Penner. Otherwise just try and fill from within and keep letting your forward group grow.

Alchemy 06-16-2013 06:03 PM

Bobby Ryan:sarcasm:

CyborgLindros 06-16-2013 06:12 PM

I don't like the idea of Laughton playing on the 4th. The Flyers rush development and get impatient. I think replacing Briere with a big name is a bad idea as well. High asking price on FA, big price in trade. I think bringing in a guy in an older guy with a year or two left in the tank would be the best idea. It would allow some more dev time for the young guys and fill the void a bit.

RJ8812* 06-16-2013 06:33 PM

probably no one. gotta replace him from within

FLYERSFAN18 06-16-2013 06:38 PM

I wouldnt mind Raymond at around 2.25-2.5 for two years. Could be a low risk high reward for the third line

BernieParent 06-16-2013 06:42 PM

I'm really interested in this Cap Space guy. He might work out well in Briere's spot.

He's got a ridiculous name but I agree.

FLYERSFAN18 06-16-2013 07:06 PM

Cap space is a great thing to have. But with the way the team is right now we need another forward or two. I bet Lavy's forward depth chart has Laughton on the fourth line

Harntell-Giroux-Voracek
Read-Schenn-Simmonds
XXX-Couturier-XXX
Talbot-Laughton-Rinaldo
Rosehill

I dont feel comfortable with Talbot any higher than the fourth line when the roster is healthy. That means we would need at least 2 top 9 forwards. I guess one of those spots could be filled by McGinn, but unless you want to play two rookies on the third line you are going to have to sign someone and even Gagne would likely command at least 2 million

SgtJoseph* 06-16-2013 07:17 PM

Mason Raymond is a very interesting possibility.......He can absolutely fly on skates, tremendous acceleration etc...Might be worth looking at in my view.

sobrien 06-16-2013 08:18 PM

Ideally I'd love the Flyers to take inexpensive runs at Jarome Iginla ($3-5m for about 3 years), Matthew Lombardi (if he passes a physical, about 2m/1-2 years) and Chad LaRose (about 2.5m/ 2-3 years). This is with Gagne returning at about $2-3m/2y and Read for Bernier happening. I'm really not sure about Laughton 4th lining it up this year. If need be, Laughton can be 3C and Couturier 3LW.

Iginla - Giroux - Voracek
Hartnell - Schenn - Simmonds
Gagne - Couturier - LaRose
Talbot - Lombardi - Rinaldo

A couple other UFA's I'd look for...if for whatever reason, Ken Holland decides to blow it up, or forgets to sign all his players, Danny Cleary for a couple years (he's 34! older than i thought), Filppula for about 4-5 years, and/or Brunner for 4-5 years.

Another really interesting name to me is Viktor Stalberg. Wouldn't mind him at all, especially if we strike out on Iginla.

Hartnell - G - Jake
Stalberg - Schenn - Simmonds
Gagne - Couts - LaRose
etc.

IF we decide to go fishing in the RFA pool, aside from the big name defensemen, Blake Wheeler's name jumps out at me the most.

Obviously most of this depends on whether or not these teams retain these players.

I think Laughton is pretty close to being gaurenteed a spot. During his AHL play Homer said he is too good for the league he was playing in (OHL in that case). Severely doubt they send him back. Homer lovesssss him. Theyll find a spot for him.

My honest prediction is he centers the 4th line.

Don't know why people keep putting Iginla in, I'd take Jagr over Iginla.

FLYERSFAN18 06-16-2013 08:24 PM

That is a lot of free agents coming in. I would rather sit tight and let Laughton play third line center duties and move Schenn to wing.

Schenn-Giroux-Simmonds
Hartnell-Couts-Voracek
XXX-Laughton-Read
Talbot-XXX-Rinaldo
Rosehill

Sign Hall or someone similar for the 4th line center duties. Sign a Free Agent with a strong two way game or Gagne for the third line. And possibly consider trying to upgrade Read with a package for an elite winger for Giroux.

Laughton should be the third line center IMO, but I think he will start on the fourth lien

Loved Jagr when he was here, and what he did for G and Hartsy, but Iginla is younger, a sniper/pwf, and can still pump 30+ goals...plus as no significant injury history. Jagr started to just disintegrate when he was here.

Even still, Lombardi, LaRose, and Stalberg are my preferred guys. Let Schenn, Couts, and Laughts move up the depth chart and sign some speedy PKing grinders who can pop some goals.

Isn't he doing terrible on the Pens?

If Laughton is going to be on the fourth line I would rather sign Raymond like someone mentioned earlier for 2.5 per and sign Gagne for 2.5 mil for one year and roll with

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Raymond-Schenn-Simmonds
Gagne-Couts-Read
Talbot-Laughton-Rinaldo

I really just do not want to sign a bunch of over the hill guys or players looking for big money and long term
