Jonathan Toews has four goals in his last 41 playoff games

I'm not normally one to start these kind of threads, but I thought that this stat was insane. I'm a big Toews guy, but that kind of production is just ridiculously bad for a player of his caliber. Even with his two-way game.

*Credit to Kershaw for posting this on the Rangers board, not sure if this was on TSN or w/e.

KEEROLE Vatanen 06-17-2013 10:29 PM

he gets a free pass from the canadian media, the same media that crucified kovalchuk last year. SHAMEFUL.

iLandHer 06-17-2013 10:31 PM

That's pretty abysmal. But I'd still want him on my team.

Why? Let me guess... intangibles?

Bergeron>

I agree. It's time for Toews to step it up.

MarleauApologist 06-17-2013 10:34 PM

If Thornton or Marleau did this then they'd be ridiculed so badly :biglaugh:

Just goes to show you what happens to your career reputation after one great playoff performance and win on a stacked cup team. Meanwhile Marleau's GPG average raises by a little over 6 in the playoffs (prorated over a full season, sthg like 28 to 34 iirc) but he's a choker because he never was on a team where players like Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien were depth players.

Fin9* 06-17-2013 10:34 PM

Patrice Bergeron. That guy is better.

But seriously i think Toews and Kane have both been very invinsible in this series. Bostons defense is just insane. At first they shutted Crosby and Malkin down now Toews and Kane..

Because I'm an Islanders fan and have you seen our roster?

Lord Flacko* 06-17-2013 10:36 PM

The Toews overrating began right before the 2010-2011 season when TSN ranked him the 3rd best player in the world.

Toews is the most overrated player in the NHL!

Many Chicago people down played what Boston did to Crosby and Malkin!

Second most overrated player.

Ziggy Stardust 06-17-2013 10:39 PM

If his name was Sundin, just imagine the things that would be written about him.

MarleauApologist 06-17-2013 10:39 PM

Tavares and Toews are equally overrated.

me2 06-17-2013 10:39 PM

He might only have 4 tangible goals but he's got nearly 30 intangible ones.

This is probably true.
Cory Perry is right below them in terms of overratedness.

At least he scored 3 goals in his last 6 playoff games. :naughty:

Yeah but Tavares is still a better player.

Chris Hansen 06-17-2013 10:43 PM

I'm done making excuses for the guy. He's scored at a 40-goal per 82 pace for two regular seasons in a row. This level of production in the playoffs is inexcusable in light of that.

KEEROLE Vatanen 06-17-2013 10:43 PM

if he was european he would be getting hammered by the north american media.
but since they like him, they're willing to either make excuses for him, or just pretend it's no big deal.

Evincar 06-17-2013 10:47 PM

Im not sure who is the more overrated playoff performer by the media, Toews or Joe Nieuwendyk.

revolverjgw 06-17-2013 10:50 PM

Michal Handzus has more points than him. Is this real life?

JamieG 06-17-2013 10:51 PM

Yep, he's lucky he's not Russian.

ponder 06-17-2013 10:51 PM

He hasn't done much offensively his last 3 playoffs, but he was really good in his first 2 playoffs, and stellar during the Olympics. Obviously you expect better of him, but I'd still take him as the #1 centre in a second on my team. A very good player, super well rounded, but don't expect him to carry your offence.

He does tend to get a touch overrated. He has sometimes been talked about as one of the top few players in the league, but realistically he may not even be a top 10 centre. Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Datsyuk, Thornton, Giroux, Tavares, Spezza, Zetterberg, E Staal, Getzlaf, Kopitar, Backstrom, H Sedin, Bergeron, etc., that's 15 centres who are either clearly better than him, or on a similar level. Even on his own team I'd say he's only the 3rd best forward offensively (behind Kane and Hossa), arguably even 4th (Sharp and Toews are IMO on very similar levels offensively).
