Starting Goaltender Part II

Last thread hit 1000. Going to put up a new poll since Bernier was traded.

PWJunior 06-23-2013 01:27 PM

Nice job getting it right at 1K IR4. You got mad skills yo! :)

Anton Khudobin, come on down! You're the next contestant on 'Who I Want'.

IslandersFan17 06-23-2013 01:33 PM

Anton is the guy I hope the Islanders go after big time.

OrangeZebra 06-23-2013 01:35 PM

Who do I want? Halak
Who do I think? Nabokov

SLAPSHOT723 06-23-2013 01:37 PM

It's hard to vote on some guys if we don't know what they'll be traded for. From that list I want Halak, but from a realistic standpoint I have to vote for Khudobin.

PhysicalGraffiti 06-23-2013 01:43 PM

My top choices on that list are Halak and Smith.

SLAPSHOT723 06-23-2013 01:51 PM

Anyone willing to take a chance on Michal Neuvirth?

SCBdude 06-23-2013 01:56 PM

Now that Bernier is in Toronto maybe Reimer is available. Otherwise I like Khudobin

Jester9881 06-23-2013 02:03 PM

I think the best plan of attack at this point is bringing back Nabokov and backing him up with Poulin.

Chapin Landvogt 06-23-2013 02:04 PM

Almost any UFA signing Snow feels is the right man for 'now' is Ok by me.

See no reason to trade for a goalie at this point.

By all accounts, that's always been the plan and Snow's pursuit of Bernier was just kicking tires. I don't think he's ready to give up on Poulin or Nilsson just yet which makes sense. I hope he looks into Khudobin though, a 2-year deal might make sense for both parties.

seafoam 06-23-2013 02:29 PM

I wouldn't have a problem with either Nabby or Smith with Poulin or Nilsson backing up.

This is what a missed opportunity looks like.

Nothing against Smith but I don't put much stock into how well a goalie plays in Phoenix. I wouldn't have issues with a 1-2 "I don't have any other options so I will take this offer" deal but I would hate a long term deal.

I usually watch ~60 caps games a year (big OV fan). I'd have to pass. Not someone I would depend on to be the guy. He's ALMOST there, but almost doesn't cut it.

What is your suggestion?

Jester9881 06-23-2013 02:52 PM

Lets compare Khudobin to Poulin... it should be pretty easy, considering both started about the same amount of games and appeared in exactly the same amount.

One big difference between the two is that Khudobin has primarily played for teams with tight defensive systems.

First, lets look at Kevin Poulin and how he fared this past season...

Here's his game log
http://espn.go.com/nhl/player/gamelo...7/kevin-poulin

Every game was against teams in the top half of the league in GPG, Two games are against top 5 in this catagory.... including one against Pittsburgh (the highest GPG team in the NHL). 60% of his games were against the best offensive teams in the NHL.

Khudobin's game log:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/player/gamelo...anton-khudobin

He feasted on Buffalo (22nd ranked offense) for 4 games, Ottawa (27th) twice and NJD (28th). Half of his games were against the worst offenses in the NHL, while playing on arguably the best defensive team in the NHL. To be fair, he did play against some real good offenses.... but in those games he was pretty average for the most part.

He played 1 game in 2011-12

In 2010-11: He played 4 games, in one he shut out the 1st ranked offense in the NHL (Vancouver), the other three were ranked in the lower half of the league (Col, Edm, Nash) including the 23rd and 28th (Edmonton and Nashville).

I fail to see how this guy is more of a sure thing than Poulin, let alone an upgrade.

Jester9881 06-23-2013 02:55 PM

And this isn't to say that either Nilsson or Koskinen could be even better than Poulin.

Big Time! This is looking like a nabby resign and poulin. after watching the disgrace that happened in net last year, you would yhink garth would try to improve in that area. hopefully he brings in a ufa. huge opportunity out the window. great chance at a #1 goalie missed by potentially moving a dissappointing prospect. maybe la had no interest in Nino?

gramatanboy 06-23-2013 03:17 PM

Maybe Snow had no interest in trading Nino for Bernier. Frattin is at best a 3rd liner, Scrivens is nothing more than a backup and a 2nd in 2014 or 2015 is hardly a great haul for Bernier. In fact, I would not trade Johan Sundstrom for those three pieces, let alone Nino. Let's see what Snow does in July and August before calling this a missed opportunity.

so bernier goes for cheap and its not a missed opportunity? God knows when I go shoppibg for a new car, I hate a good deal. Missed opportunity.

How is Bernier a #1 goalie? he's played 60 something games in the NHL for a better, more defensive styled team than the Isles and still has a career save percentage of .912, which really shouldn't wow you.

Yeah me too

StrongIslanders90 06-23-2013 04:02 PM

In all seriousness I would love to somehow get Koskinen over to NA again...He's been awesome in Europe and is 25 so he is a bit more mature....
