CAR's 5th Overall

I'm interested to hear who wants the fifth pick and how badly. Let it be known what your team's draft target would be in that spot, and make the offer assuming your target is there at five.

Going on what JR has stated in the past few months, any offer needs to have:

Top-4 Defenseman on an affordable contract (and no UFAs after one year please, and preferably a physical, solid defensively guy)
A first round pick coming back in this year's draft (preferably in the top-10, although not a dealbreaker)

I'm going to add a bottom six veteran forward who plays physically, but doesn't have stone hands to the list. Not a necessity, this is coming from me, not JR, and how I value the pick's return.

Girgenburger 06-26-2013 03:12 PM

Buffalo offers #8, #52 and Luke Adam

EpicDing 06-26-2013 03:14 PM

Rangers would likely offer Staal, but hopefully the name outweighs the fact that we don't have a first to offer.

Vankiller Whale 06-26-2013 03:16 PM

What's Carolina more likely to move, the 5th overall or Skinner?

StuckOutHere 06-26-2013 03:18 PM

Maybe this has been batted around, but is there a framework around Phaneuf to be had? (w/extension or withheld salary)

IPreferPi 06-26-2013 03:18 PM

Already discussed a Gormley package, so I'll propose in a new one that represents my current Sophie's Choice among our (talented) defenseman in the attempt to move up:

Stone (two-way thumper who should be a solid Top 4 RHD as early as next season) + Moss + 12th + 62nd for the 5th + Peters

Kershaw 06-26-2013 03:18 PM

Marc Staal.

InfinityIggy 06-26-2013 03:19 PM

Giordano + 22nd Overall.

Targeting: Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm.

I don't know about anybody else but my preference for the Canes is for the Gormley deal...it's been the yardstick I've been measuring all other offers against; I consider it the proposal to beat and nothing else has been close.

TorontoTrades 06-26-2013 03:22 PM

anything from the leafs?

interested in Darnell Nurse, think he's the best player not in the big 4.

this is assuming the big 4 go as they should.

Yeah, I'm obviously more willing than some other Yotes HFers to go through with that deal since it will get us Lindholm and because of our depth at LHD. But it's still painful lol. :-/ Gotta give to get though, and if the Canes were to magnanimously throw in Dalpe + Peters, I'd be much obliged :-)

Gardiner is young, cheap, and highly skilled. Dont know how interested CAR would be in him though.

I'd be happy with any of the top 6 players in the draft at #5 (Mac, Jones, Drouin, Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan)

1972 06-26-2013 03:25 PM

I don't think the difference between 5 and 8 is much more than a 2nd round pick. 4 however is worth a lot.

Good player, but we have no need for him. An offensive defenseman is the last thing we need.

Marc Staal to the Canes seems rational. Top 4 guy, reunite the Staals.

NYR get a choice of a top young center or Nichuskin. And their defense would still be solid

Mr Misty 06-26-2013 03:28 PM

Daley plus 10th overall

Nemeth 06-26-2013 03:31 PM

5th + Skinner

for

Daley, Ritchie, Morrow, 10th, 29th,

A co-worker was talking about this. Seems like a good deal for both teams.
It was then brought up that the falmes should move to the 5th and also flip the 6th overall along with Cammalleri (some salary retained) for the 3rd overall from Tampa.

Both seem reasonable to me. I am not a flames fan but as I live in the city I sometimes get caught up in homer flames views.

Not interested in dropping all the way to #22. JR has been on the record saying that if he moves down it would likely be no further than 7-8.

OP wants a top 4 D coming back in the deal. You wont likely get that by dropping to 7-8. I can understand not wanting to drop to 22 though.

A top 4 defenseman in JR's eyes could be someone like Joe Corvo, so it's quite possible that he could get 'a top 4 defenseman' and stay in the top 10.

I think the deal killer with Calgary is the fact that their 2nd pick is fairly low, if their second 1st was from 11-16, I'd jump on that deal. 22 is just far too low.

Guys like Corvo will be available in Free Agency, there is no point to Carolina moving down for a player like that.

Cammy is near worthless to Tampa Bay, even at the minimum cap hit of $3m with Calgary keeping salary.

Fro 06-26-2013 03:48 PM

i feel like the Blue Jackets have the pieces to make a deal work, just not sure what makes sense...
