Panthers letting Weiss test market

As per @hfialkov on Twitter (local Panthers writer)

Quote:

"Panthers are letting C Stephen Weiss, G Jose Theodore and D Tyson Strachan test free agency next week. #flapanthers"
So Weiss is officially on the market....

AlowlyMcOilersfan 06-27-2013 04:34 PM

I'll start the bidding.

4x5 if we don't sign Gagner

bleedblue1223 06-27-2013 04:36 PM

He struggled last season and had wrist surgery, someone is going to regret signing him.

Stammer Time 06-27-2013 04:37 PM

Lightning suddenly have a lot of capspace and a hole in the center spot on the second line...

I think it would be cool if next season we see Weiss in a Lightning jersey, and Lecavalier in a Panthers jersey :)

Beville 06-27-2013 04:42 PM

Off to Ottawa e5

It's not so much about the struggle/surgery, but that someone is going to give him 1C money when he's obviously not worth it to begin with.

Paradoc 06-27-2013 04:43 PM

Knew it. Willing to sign him, if Nonis can't get an 1C by the time the draft starts.

Kitsy 06-27-2013 04:44 PM

If Leafs do 5 years at 5 million I would be happy.

So will the fans of 29 other teams

AwesomePanthers 06-27-2013 04:50 PM

So annoying that Weiss injury likely costed us a 1st round pick+.

I hope not, very odd move to make unless a #1 center is being brought in from elsewhere. Weiss would not be an upgrade on Grabovski (and will likely make the same money anyway).

I agree... I'd offer him 2 years 4mil per at most. Any contract longer then 2 years is too big of a risk and any amount over 4mil per is an overpayment.

HockeyRulez 06-27-2013 04:57 PM

Not really surprising...

No, there's a few teams that wouldn't want him, or don't need him.

Pittsburgh doesn't need another centre.

Leafs87 06-27-2013 05:01 PM

If the leafs go after Weiss, I hope Nonnis saves one of our compliance buyouts for him next season.

This is from 2011, but still http://bleacherreport.com/articles/6...he-only-option

MISC* 06-27-2013 05:05 PM

His real worth is 3.75-4 mill.

He will get 5-5.5.

i meant the fans of 29 other teams will be happy if the Leafs sign him to a 5 year deal at 5 per

Zirakzigil 06-27-2013 05:15 PM

Not surprised. What is more surprising is that he isnt one of the best centers out there, especially if Richards becomes available.

Yep, just not a lot of great options at C in the UFA market. I think Toronto will pay him that $5-5.5 and slot him as a number one center. He'll do okay there, not great. It could work out alright for both sides if they don't give him long term. If he gets a 5+ year deal, it could get bad towards the end.

i doubt that, unless he gets injured. his struggles were directly related to not only his injuries, but the injuries throughout the rest of the panthers as well.

any team that gets him is going to love him. he's a great heart-and-soul kind of player.

it is suprising at first glance, but these amnesty buyouts are flooding what is already a pretty deep UFA crop. maybe it will lead to him getting around 4-4.5 as opposed to what he could command on a thin market.
