Mact's performance thus far.

In his first test as manager, the draft, ... Well, he made a lot of picks. He increased the odds of finding a diamond in the rough, so.... Not bad.

But, he explicitly stated he wanted to come away with a roster player. Significant players were move, but not to Edmonton. Major fail.

I'm not talking about Schneider, either. Too big a price for a debatable upgrade. But Boland, Clutterbuck, Sekera misses r ... Well, they're forgivable but also unimpressive.

Tho it is early, like Tambo, we have yet to see anything that proves Mact is a good manager.

alphahelix 07-01-2013 10:59 AM

A- so far. Could improve to an A+ shortly.

frag2 07-01-2013 11:00 AM

C+.

While he got some serviceable parts/picks and a high sought after coach, still not good enough. Then again, it technically isn't his mess but Tambo and Lowe's that he's cleaning so maybe a tad harsh

GMofOilers 07-01-2013 11:01 AM

I don't like the trading down in the draft for more picks. Didn't make sense to me. If we thought our forward position was weak like posters on here suggest we could of done this draft differently.

#7 pick Nish
#37 pick Bowey
#56 Roy even Comrie

I would of been just as happy if not happier with them first 3 players than the first 5 or 6 we ended up selecting.

Going to be a few years to tell, maybe we are better off, who knows. As of right now just so hard to tell. Lots of questions. Like mact says, if your asking questions about it, theres a good chance you already know the answer?

McTedi 07-01-2013 11:06 AM

N/A...he has yet do to anything to improve this team. Yes he stock the cupboards but we something to fill massive holes in the lineup or this team will fail.

Tarus 07-01-2013 11:06 AM

Pluses - he hasn't traded any of the big 5 yet

Minuses -Wishy-washy on the coach, telegraphed his every move, overpromised and under-delivered to a huge extent, talked trash about his predecessor and then had the exact same problems, and sounded like a superstitious fool after the Nurse pick.

D minus, F if he continues the trend through UFA week.

joestevens29 07-01-2013 11:07 AM

Might as well start one for Dallas Eakins, hasn't spent any time working with any of his players yet.

nexttothemoon 07-01-2013 11:28 AM

My grade on MacT is going to be purely results based. We need to give him more time this summer to make the changes and trades/acquisitions the team so clearly needs. This draft wasn't the be all end all in making those changes. There is still plenty of time to make trades, overseas acquisitions and/or acquire players in the UFA market.

If the team makes the playoffs his grade will be A... if not then F. No middle ground for me anymore. Purely results based grading of MacT and this org going forward.

Gret99zky 07-01-2013 11:39 AM

MacT had better hope the UFA market brings something.

I expect to see Horcoff, Hemsky, Belanger, on the opening day roster.

And Gagner and PRV's cap hit to be considerably higher than it would have been a week ago.

It won't even surprise me to see Khabby on a one year deal.

Sometimes the moves you don't make...yadda, yadda, yadda.

i thought the Oilers should have taken at least ONE goalie.

Considering MacT talked about this before the draft, why would you be shocked that he stayed with what he said and didn't take one?

They were in on Zucale and that was it.

Tad McMikowsky 07-01-2013 11:42 AM

IT's been one day. I think it's way too soon to give a guy anything.

While I agree that some of the doom and gloom on here is a little much, this reaction is equally as silly.

Fact is, we had three strong assets available to improve the team without moving NHL players of value; the first and the two seconds. Now, we've burned through those with nothing of immediate help to show for it.

Any moves he makes likely involve roster players and no, you aren't going to dramatically improve this team just by moving Horcoff and Hemsky.

And its not like free agency has ever been good to the Oilers.

He should've been in on Kennedy and Bolland. We could have made better offers than what they went for.

thadd 07-01-2013 11:53 AM

F for fail.

He hasn't done anything to hurt us but he's done the exact same thing as Tambo has so far. He was brought in to get things done and it was expected to improve us at the draft.

I really like the guys he drafted, but that's not what we were supposed to be doing at this draft. You can give me a million reasons or excuses why (best one being there was pretty much no teams wanting to make any big moves at the draft) but the fact is that Tambo got fired because we needed to get things done.

F-,;).

The Good
-Getting rid of Tony Robbins.
-Not making any stupid moves and keeping the core intact.

The Bad
- Not drafting a #2C or a quality tender in the draft.
-Making a bunch of nonsensical promises about "bold moves", while doing nothing to address the immediate needs of the team, and instead using the "currency of choice" to trade down for quantity instead of filling one of the organizational needs with quality.

The Ugly
-Keeping the human cockroach on the coaching staff. Again. Embarrassing. Although, by all accounts, this was out of his control as Harold Ballard 2.0 likely intervened on Buckbeak's behalf.

I thought Eakins made those decisions?

Why on earth is Kelly B still here? Has K-Lowe convinced Katz that we owe our older players because they played in a time that players didn't make so much money while these guys sacrificed so much for us? That doesn't justify things.

Nobody forced them to be hockey players. They chose to do it.

That's what they would like you to think.

As far as I'm concerned, he's still got the whole summer before I'll judge. Even so, it's worrying that he has yet to add a single player with even a single day of NHL experience to the roster.

Meh. What's done is done at this point.

As much as I don't like Oil Change the last season and a bit, I wonder if it's coming back. Get to see how MacT does things and compare it with Tambo:laugh:

Hopefully, you're right, because if Craig Mactavish can't make the much needed trades;we are most likely going to miss out on the playoffs for another season.

MinnesotaFats 07-01-2013 12:14 PM

I'm not crazy about our draft other than Nurse. Dude has it all. Offensive upside might be limited but he'll be a cornerstone for us in a few years.

And I'm not down on MacT for lack of roster moves. It looks like Gillis used MacT to leverage a better deal out of NJ. If the Oil were offering the 7th +, it seems pretty obviously that Gillis had no desire to deal Schneider within the division. Same goes for Clutterbuck - Fletcher said flat out he wouldn't so can't flag MacT for that. Bolland is really the only guy that we might have has a shot at. Price was right, but I do wonder if The Hawks let him chose his destination in return for being a good soldier. Seems pretty fortuitous that he landed in his home town.

Plenty if time for MacT to deal with Hemsky and Horc. I didn't expect either of those guys to get moved at the draft anyways.
