MacKenzie: Vancouver Places D Keith Ballard On Conventional Waivers

VAN's Keith Ballard is on conventional waivers. Not $100 unconditional waivers, which is necessary for buyout purposes.

Making cap space?

bobbyflex 07-01-2013 11:25 AM

owners too cheap to buy out?

Kershaw 07-01-2013 11:25 AM

Rangers to put a claim?

Reunite with his buddy Alain Vigneault.

Minko 07-01-2013 11:27 AM

So they're hoping someone sees enough to claim him?

kammyBlazer* 07-01-2013 11:28 AM

i'm beginning to really hate Gillis.

He's terrible, he gave up a pretty decent package to get this guy too.

desmond 07-01-2013 11:31 AM

He will clear.

hatterson 07-01-2013 11:31 AM

I really don't understand the point of this.

I guess they're just hoping someone takes him for free.

Seems a little crazy that he couldn't deal him yesterday for at least a 7th round pick.

turkulad 07-01-2013 11:31 AM

Edler wasn't dealt away and now they have too many dollars tied up, literally, on their D. Ballard probably hasn't been offered a good return so next step is waiving him and seeing if they can give him somewhere for free. Next step is a decent/better-than-nothing deal where they take some salary back. Last step is the buyout. Seems kind of logical, obvious even.

Gillis isn't the one paying for buyouts with his money. Hate ownership for not being willing to spend money to give the team a better chance to win next year.

The Mars Volchenkov 07-01-2013 11:32 AM

What role can Ballard play these days?

Numbers 07-01-2013 11:34 AM

This is predictable and obvious. Anyone who is surprised or says they hate Gillis for this are clueless lol. In the next couple of days many teams are going to start dong this with their own players.

He's actually still servicable IMO. I always thought he was mistreated by AV, and actually he and Tanev were our best D-pairing at the beginning of the season for a bit.

Perhaps he could succeed as a 5th to 6th defenseman. The problem is that he lacks hockey sense. So he is prone to make huge gaffs.

Lindo 07-01-2013 11:37 AM

Hoping the Islanders claim him?

Seriously. This idea that you would not at least try this with a buyout candidate (unless he has a clause pre-empting it) seems kinda silly. The tried basically giving him away for free, now they try actually giving him away for free. May be a little humiliating for a player they thought so highly off not long ago, but still, I'd give waivers a shot before shelling out millions too.

Vitto79 07-01-2013 11:38 AM

so he's on waivers to be bought out regularily and not compliance?

TehDoak 07-01-2013 11:39 AM

Probably just seeing if someone claims him to save the compliance buyouts for a later date.

My guess is teams more like ANA, EDM, OTT, and even PHI if they want to deal out Coburn.

Sucks. I'm pretty sure Gillis is the first GM to ever give up a good package for a player who didn't really pan out. Terrible.

I'm confident Keith Ballard is still a top 4 defenseman when he's allowed to play his game. He's a dynamic player who loves to skate the puck up the ice and can stand up for team mates. Very fast skater (won fastest Canuck this year), is chippy (loves the hipcheck, especially), and can block shots. His defensive game is underwhelming, however, and doesn't seem to adjust well to strict coaching (AV tried to convert him into a safe, first-pass 3rd pairing dman and failed miserably). Unfortunately, we never had any room for him here in Vancouver after signing Hamhuis and wish him success at the NHL level next year wherever he goes.
