#NYR Hopes to return to NHL eventually, but Rangers' decision not to QO him definitely an indication that it's not a given. Very unfortunate

Awful situation. I hope he can live out a normal life.

Vitto79 07-02-2013 10:52 AM

Screw you Dion Phaneuf:shakehead

It was clean. And I guess on a related note, so was the Potvin one.

Greg02 07-02-2013 10:58 AM

Doesn't mean we can't hate them forever.

Of course.

[whistle song] Phaneuf sucks!

Your right.

Still the way that was handled in Toronto by everyone up there was gruesome. At the every least I would love to see McIlrath or Noreau just pound the snot outa him one night.

Yup on both.

Jim Cerny had live chat last year (Rangers were in Sweeden I believe) and Ulf Nilsson was part of it and a fan asked Nilsson about the hit. Even Nilsson said the hit was clean. Said his skate was caught in a rut.

Shame some people still blame DF for the hit. Loose chin strap is a no no ppl.

We can only hope Sauer gets better and hopefully makes a return. Such a terrible situation.

eyjee 07-02-2013 11:12 AM

Terrible news. Time to look past hockey and hope he can live a normal life now. I hope the Rangers give him every opportunity to continue to contribute to the organization if that's what Sauer wants. Similar to what they have been doing with Dan Blackburn.

I implore the Toronto Maple Leafs and media to stop celebrating the hit now. Yes it was clean, but it has essentially ended Sauer's career. Please stop showing it in highlight reels.

HatTrick Swayze 07-02-2013 11:12 AM

Very sad.

Kershaw 07-02-2013 11:13 AM

**** Phaneuf. I know the hit was clean, but just **** him.

Pretty disrespectful/clueless of the leafs showing that last year when they were leading the game.

I hope first thing McIlrath does in the league is destroy Phaneuf.

slipknottin 07-02-2013 12:30 PM

Really need to get some better treatments for concussions. This "rest" thing is all they have, and it doesn't work all that well

SupersonicMonkey* 07-02-2013 12:32 PM

Really sucks. Hope Mike can get over this and live a nice healthy and happy life.

Hopefully the Rangers and the NHLPA are there 100% to help him as long as he needs.

M Gaz 07-02-2013 12:33 PM

This is just another thing to hate Phaneuf over. Yeah, it was a clean hit, but it still resulted in an injury that may have ended a player's career. That's not cool. And DMac isn't gonna do anything because there's no way that chicken**** is gonna drop the gloves.

Dammit I'm still pissed off over it.

Poozer 07-02-2013 12:38 PM

Poor guy. I suffered from post concussion symptoms for nearly 2 years when I was a teenager, sometimes it really does just take a long time to recover from.

Does he continue to receive medical services/cost coverage from the Rangers since the injury occurred while he was under contract in a game? I don't really know how that works in the NHL.

I'm sure if he doesn't get anything from the Rangers, he'll get it from the NHLPA.

Good call, I didn't think of that. That is good to know at the least.

I believe they have insurance for this type of thing. Lost income from injury ending a career early. May not be a ton of money, but better than nothing

Miller Time NYR 07-02-2013 12:51 PM

Everytime I initially see a thread with his name I get excited and it's always bad news, still holding into a little hope he can make a recovery

Florida Ranger 07-02-2013 12:57 PM

This may be mean to say, but this falls on him for wearing his helmet like a hat.

I wish him well and I hope he does recover to 100%

Get well soon, Mike.

Crazy to see how much one shift, one hit, can impact a promising young player's career. Really hoping to see him play again but I'm not holding my breath.

RangerBoy 07-02-2013 01:13 PM

Sauer has bad genes. Both of his brothers saw their careers cut short with injuries. 2010-11 was the only season Sauer stayed healthy. Injuries in junior. Concussions. Hip surgeries. ACL and shoulder surgeries in the AHL. The Rangers selected him in 2005 coming off having surgeries on both hips. A birth defect and a torn labrum.
