1955 Hockey Hall of Fame Nixes Kingston

In June of 1955 it was announced that the HHOF was not going to Kingston:

One of the remaining venues was the new McConnell Arena being built on the campus of McGill University in Montreal behind Molson Stadium.

Well, there is a Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston Ontario, still open, operational, preceding the one Conn Smythe & the league created in the late 50's, early 60's in Toronto. Captain Sutherland as he was called, sometimes referred to as "Thye Father of Hockey" was elected into it in 1945. Former Presidents of the CAHA & OHA, Coach in Kingston of the Frontenacs pre WW1. He died in 1955 I guess shortly after this article came out.

Reading between the lines, I sense that by 1955 the NHL had figured out the sponsorship potential of a hockey hall of fame and that getting sponsorship for a Kingston location was not going to happen.

The idea of the HHOF going to Montreal as part of the new McConnell Arena on the McGill University campus is rather humourous. J.W. McConnell, publisher of the Montreal Star, philantrophist,

could have bought the NHL many times over in 1955. Once opened, the McConnell Arena was used for high school hockey, something that the Forum was reluctant to support. Seriously doubt that J.W. McConnell would have bestowed any largesse on the likes of Conn Smythe.

Sutherland was the guy who actually established the HHOF in Kingston in 1943 (first inductions were in 45), then in 1958 the NHL withdrew its support for plans to re-brand it as the International Hockey Hall of Fame. Conn Smythe & Frank Selke Sr. headed up the founding of what was essentially the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, Smythes Swan Song to the game he'd dedicated much of his life to, overseeing construction on the CNE grounds in Toronto next to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. To some degree a "vanity project".... Didnt realize McConnell was a Muskoka boy. Interesting.
