Ron Rolston appears set to add a former NHL Coach of the Year candidate to his staff.

Joe Sacco, who coached the Colorado Avalanche for four seasons and was a Jack Adams Award finalist in 2009-10, will be named Rolston's assistant coach on the Sabres, a source tells The Buffalo News. General Manager Darcy Regier said today that Rolston was zeroing in on an assistant and would name him in the coming days.

Do we get Jack Adams Sacco or dumped from Colorado Sacco?

I am equal parts thrilled and dismayed.

Chainshot 07-02-2013 01:01 PM

Not who I was expecting.

Chainshot 07-02-2013 01:02 PM

Well, he has experience. I'll give him that.

Zman5778 07-02-2013 01:03 PM

That seems out of the blue a bit.

Not disappointed, but not overly thrilled either. Can't hurt to have some experience I guess.

Not on my radar at all. Color me surprised.

There are a lot of coaches who suck as head guys but are very apt assistants. I hope Sacco proves to be the latest.

Zip15 07-02-2013 01:05 PM

Uh oh. After seeing all the Avs fans complaining about his usage, this concerns me somewhat--hopefully, as the head coach, Rolston's decisions on usage are his own. That said, I'll take a wait-and-see approach.

Another sign of change from the Lindy era. Lindy would never have made this hire. He liked his assistants inexperienced and non-threatening.

Same.. my face when I saw this: Oh lawd....

Hope he's a better assistant.

Sabre Dance 07-02-2013 01:09 PM

Wonder if this is a sign we are making a trade for one of the Avs. But probably not.

Rhett4 07-02-2013 01:10 PM

Can he run a PP? That's the biggest question. I think it is an interesting choice and like his HC experience.

Mit Yarrum 07-02-2013 01:16 PM

I like it. Lots of experience. This is an anti-Lindy type of hire.

It's hard to tell given that he's never been an assistant in the NHL and he was only an assistant for two years in the AHL (Lowell in 05-06 and Albany in 06-07).

I like the fact that they went outside the organization and went with a guy with some NHL head coaching experience.

haseoke39 07-02-2013 01:22 PM

I like it. Rolston has 0 NHL experience, and we need a guy who can help teach the NHL game, not the under 17 game.

Djp 07-02-2013 01:25 PM

im stunned.....sort of like the plan to take the next big step toward the playoffs by thinking you are going to sign one of the hot UFAs only to sign a pedestrian 4th liner

Sabre the Win 07-02-2013 01:26 PM

I'm all for it, it cant make the team any worse and the experience he has is good. Defiantly liking the change of attitude within the Sabres organization lately.

Avs fan here, popping in after hearing the news.

I always kind of felt that Sacco would have made a better NHL Assistant Coach than a Head Coach. He seems like a "players coach" from what we've heard around the old "Water Cooler".

But he made some strange decisions on a lot of things, among those he employed a Dump And Chase system that wasn't good for Colorado, he used guys like Matt Hunwick and Greg Zanon in roles they weren't meant for (as in most ice-time for Defenseman most games).

His PP last year was beyond atrocious, and for the most part was bad the year before. He seemed pretty infatuated w/ playing a Forward on the Point in a PP, and several times last year he would bring out a 5-Forward PP, meaning we gave up a lot of shorthanded scoring chances/SHG's.

I think he's a good guy that was put in a situation way above his head too early. As an Assistant he can learn some more, I feel he'll be better as an Assistant Coach anyway.

Zip15 07-02-2013 01:28 PM

Wonder if this greases the skids for Rolston to bring in Cassidy. Sacco's previous and recent NHL head coaching experience used to counterbalance Cassidy's lack of experience in the league (and Rolston's, for that matter).

Hah, sounds like Ruff incarnate.

La Cosa Nostra 07-02-2013 01:34 PM

I like it.I wonder who the other will be, hopefully another young up and comer like Rolston.

tsujimoto74 07-02-2013 01:40 PM

Oh dear God why.
I mean, I guess he has experience? But that really doesn't make him any good.

A cross between Kevin Adams and James Patrick. :biglaugh:

I wonder if Teppo inherits the PP coaching duties.

MARCUS FOLlGNO PHD 07-02-2013 01:42 PM

He'll show this team how to get a top three pick
