NHL and NHLPA agree on cap formula

According to TSN.ca
...The Globe and Mail reports that the NHL and NHL Players' Association have agreed on a formula for a salary-cap system based on team-by-team revenue...a team-by-team salary floor and cap will based on a percentage of each NHL team's revenue. The paper adds that in the first year - based on revenue projections by both sides - the salary cap will range from $34 million to $36 million US, with the floor from $22 million to $24 million US...

Does this resolution mean we're going to have a "real" draft???

David A. Rainer 06-08-2005 04:03 PM

It's just the salary cap that they have apparently come to an agreement on. Would still need to come to an agreement both between the owners and between the owners and players for the draft. Still pending.

Doesnt this practically mean though that we kind of have an agreement i mean this was the problem with that solved isnt the rest easy?

It means the biggest hurdle has been conquered. They still have issues like Free agency, arbitration, qualifying offers, amount of games played, and a plethora of others

Be interesting to see what happens with a transitional cap in the interim so teams can get under the cap with their current revenues and salary structure.

I have to think the Kings are probably middle of the road revenue-wise. Maybe a little higher than the NHL average, but I'm only guessing.

They have a current payroll with 19 players signed right at the cap ($31,475,000). They'd still need a few players and have only 1 or 2 mil total to spend.

That's not including the rollback right?

It'll be interesting to see if the rumored rollback or year of the contracts part happen?

FW, what is their payroll if the 04-05 contracts aren't honored?

I took the numbers from the NHLPA website. Not sure whose contracts died after this '04-'05. That would be what you'd have to find out to know.

My total came from the total of contracts signed going into last season.

I'm very interested in finding out the Kings cap situtation. I think there will be a 24% roll back because if there isnt one the too many teams would be over the cap. If, anyone can provide more info about our payroll situation then that would be great.

According to this post, the Kings have 12 players signed for $20.6M in 2005-06 without any rollback. I believe the signed players are Conroy, Brown, Klatt, Armstrong, Cowan, Avery, Norstrom, Miller, Visnovsky, Gleason, Dempsey, and Garon. With a 24% rollback, the payroll would be $15.676M, plus bonuses.

19 - Hogeboom - Greg - Agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Kings on April 8,2004 - Expires 2006
21 - Ryan - Matt - Signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings on August 2,2004 - Expires 2007

Pushkarev signed a 3-year, entry level contract with the Kings in September of 2004, so he's locked in until 2007...

The NHL and NHLPA met for 4 straight days and I'm not sure how many hours it was but it was A LOT. THEY ARE ALSO GOING TO MEET ON MONDAY! Although there are reports that they might have not actually agreed on the cap formula, they are close. They have made a lot of progress in many different areas and IMO if they keep meeting like this which it looks like they will, the lock out should end either by the end of this month or at the end of next month at the latest. I am really beginning to get optimistic again. I can't wait for the lockout to end so we can head into free agency, conduct a draft, and get the season going in October.
