Matt Cullen and Viktor Stalberg to NSH
4 years, 3M per for Stalberg

no terms for Cullen yet.

Love the Stalberg signing, but the Cullen deal is nonsense. We now have 3 #3 Cs, still no top six Cs.

NoNecksCurse 07-05-2013 12:57 PM

cullen signing is dumb. nothing against him, serviceable center.. veteran.. but fisher, legwand, cullen could be the same player in terms of production. 3rd line centers.. fisher maybe a 2nd

SeventyOneTN 07-05-2013 01:01 PM

Love Stalberg at that price/term. Cullen is fine, looks like we will try and roll 3 lines pretty good lines and score by committee. I don't think injuries will kill us offensively the same way. Some depends on the Cullen price/term

token grinder 07-05-2013 01:04 PM

maybe not wanting to risk our center depth we we did last year? what was it? Legwand-Smith-Spaling-Watson at the end. yeah, I am ok with Cullen as insurance

exactly he brings in much needed depth.

He is a quick complete player too and will surprise most of the doubters here.

Stalberg is a great 3rd liner and a fringe 2nd liner. Great speed. Decent on both ends of the rink. Great size. Good for between 15-20Gs. I am happy.

We get Cullen, I am going to be pissed.

maplepred 07-05-2013 01:06 PM

Cullen is garbage. Waste of roster space.

I Will Son 07-05-2013 01:07 PM

Cullen is a pure waste. Should let the youngsters take his spot

Stalberg is an awesome deal

Jarnberg 07-05-2013 01:08 PM

Stalberg is a depth player. Isn't a game changer at all. Not a bad signing as you need those but the Predators still need a game changing top 3 player. If he is all the Preds get scoring wise it's going to be another long year.

He's not garbage at all, but it's clear we'd rather have a veteran over one of the young guys in that spot.

I love the stalberg signing Cullen I'm meh on maybe we can get Brunner

Nashville Transplant 07-05-2013 01:13 PM

Cullen is that guy you want on the ice when up 2-1 with a minute left. He's also the guy who can play in ALL special team situations. Granted, he's 36, so he and Scott Nichol can talk about the good ol' days, but he's far from garbage... just not as sexy as signing Clarkson, or Alfredsson, or Briere. I'm ok with this, because he'll help on the ice WAY more than he'll hurt...

Clune - Cullen - Stalberg (grin)

Jarnberg 07-05-2013 01:17 PM

Cullen 2 year / $7 million

ThirdManIn 07-05-2013 01:17 PM

Cullen got 2 yrs/AAV $3.5m

AdmiralsFan24 07-05-2013 01:18 PM

I'm in the vast minority apparently but I like the Cullen deal.

Roman Yoshi 07-05-2013 01:18 PM

Fire Poile. 3.5 for Cullen??!?!?

Viqsi 07-05-2013 01:18 PM

$3.5m/yr for Cullen?

How did that happen?

worstfaceoffmanever 07-05-2013 01:21 PM

Stalberg will be good if 60% or more of his shifts start in the offensive zone. That's a big part of why his possession stats (Corsi, etc.) have been so good: Quenneville has put him in a really protected role. His power play production was horrible despite getting the fourth-most ice time among Chicago forwards on the man advantage (Toews, Kane, and Hossa were the only ones higher).

This is a good move if we can add someone better to ensure he plays on the third line, like Ryder or even Brunner.

Cullen makes no sense, regardless of term, unless we're doing something with Gaustad or keeping Wilson on the wing. It's a complete waste of our time and money to go after old fogies and expecting the offense to magically become rainbows and friendship.

I'm interested to see what we do the rest of the day. There are still several big targets out there we could go after.

Enoch 07-05-2013 01:25 PM

Solid not spectacular or overly pricey deals. I'm not upset with the Cullen amount because the guy is so consistent as a mid tier offensive player. I just wish we had done better. Last year all that space was left unused. At least we are trying this year. I probably would have looked elsewhere, but meh. Stallberg looks like a good fit.

TootooTrain 07-05-2013 01:27 PM

3.5 for Cullen and it's not a 1yr? Other than being pretty decent on the PP, he's more of what this team already has.

token grinder 07-05-2013 01:32 PM

I lie the Cullen deal, but I have also accepted what we are going to do rolling lines and go back to trying to be a balanced team again.

Byrddog 07-05-2013 01:38 PM

The offseason is like eating leftover Hagus. Preds Take scraps that make them no better.

Persona5 07-05-2013 02:10 PM

3.5 m a year for cullen should get poile fired. Such a bad contract for a 4 th line center. I guess we need another gaustad or something.

ilikeblocks 07-05-2013 03:07 PM

Gaustad looks to be on the way out - part of a deal for Vanek?

Cullen's a really, really solid player. Stepped up to play 2nd line and PP minutes often on the Wild.

Cullen is not a 4th line center and for only 2 years this deal isn't that bad. Obviously Poile missed out on Briere and Ribero but wanted to bring in a center with some skill still. Cullen is still good for 50 points or so if he plays a full year.

So no it's not the top line player that we wanted but Fisher,Leggy,Cullen are three solid 40-50 point producers. Line up will be balanced but still no top line player like we were hoping.
